I've actually been trying to be nice most of the time, but clearly certain people have some serious problems here. I'm taking a break from this cesspool. Maybe the 2025 thread will be better?

Next post on The Ides Of March.

The Soup Nazi 12.15.2024 02:24 AM

Hey _tunic_, did you getcherself Bettie Serveert's Live On 2 Meter Sessions? Came out on Friday! Only 500 copies! It's got my favorite Betties song, "Falling Foster"!

Yeah, it’s gross.

What an incredibly abstruse cross to bear, I couldn't begin to imagine such atrocity on a grand scale. Brutal words ringing through the dusty columns of the ages, reminiscent of Jesus' prediction at the last supper regarding his untimely betrayal: "It would be better for him if he had not been born, tWaT!". Fairly, It's enough to make any man of the earth consider recourse.

Or, just y'nar, cope.

The weird thing is that nowhere on this thread you said you hate all pop music, nor did I, and these two went as mad as a box full of frogs.

I’m not above saying it could easily have been a misunderstanding and that it might have been my fault. Maybe Diesel was just being cheeky, at least initially. I interpreted it differently, and I may well have been wrong to do so.

!@#$%! 12.15.2024 11:31 PM

i *tried* listening to charli xcx and lasted 15 seconds with it! (i blame one of you for this. i forget who it was. doesn't matter, i will not seek revenge)

she sounded to my ears like she was trying to take a shit. you know that "pushing" sound? like... someone making an effort to overcome the sphincter? "hhhhhhhhnnn....!"

anyway lmao please continue your brawls. i swear they are fun to read! i'm not averting my eyes or anything

but yeah no from me to that voice, hahaha. not this year, not in any year, or the xcx century, hard pass

The Soup Nazi 12.16.2024 03:26 AM

M'kay, so disappoinment of the year for me was Fontaines D.C. I know that on the first song of the first album they announced they were "gonna be big" ;), but they went Coldplay Stadium big, almost unlistenable. And sorry not sorry, I gotta throw this in: the new haircuts/dyed hair, the stupid clothes and the glasses and bullshit... Lads gonna rregrret it, mate.

Lmao. I like a lot of Charli’s tracks but I totally get this! She also sounds, like, SO British that it feels as though nobody could realistically be quite that British. Lmao.
I’m not a huge Charli fan, but I listened to the shit out of Brat. It’s her first album that I played over and over. There’s this piano breakdown in “Mean Girls” that just soars. A purely musical moment in an otherwise vocal-heavy pop album.

I'm tempted to get it indeed, but still hesitating. They did 4 sessions, and only these 8 songs make it onto the album which is probably like 40% of what's been recorded. I hate that, why don't they release the full sessions???

Drjohnrock 12.18.2024 02:21 AM

I very recently found out that The Dandy Warhols but a new album out on March 15 called Rockmaker. This one really flew under the radar. I've listened to about half of it and it's really good.

It happens. Every single year. In 2028, if Putin's Pet hasn't blown up the earth yet, I'll "discover" a 2024 album and go, "Damn! Where was I when this came out!" And of course the thing will be out of print and used copies will go for north of a C-note.

In other news, this thread went pretty mellow after the last flame war. You sons of bitches are conflict-oriented! :D

If you have the coins, then it's down to how big of a Bettie Serveert collector you are. I know you love the band, but if you're cool with not having EVERYTHING... On the other hand, you may rue the day. RUE I tell ya. (I'm not helping much, evidently. :o)

Top 10 Y'all

Severian 12.19.2024 09:23 PM

Waxahatchee’s new album is surprisingly good too. Haven’t been over the moon for much of their stuff but this one hits.

Toilet & Bowels 12.21.2024 10:27 PM

I think Charlie XCX sounds trite as fuck. It's like a fucking Tulisa song or some other bullshit but with generic britpop lyrics.
Anyone over the age of 30 who listens to this crap needs to have a fucking word with themself.

Daniel Johnston - Lost Recordings V (1980-1983) (available now)

I wish Charli xcx would sound as good as this.

I’m not doing any more arguing about this. because I’m honestly not into charli enough to fight about it, but I get the “trite” thing. I definitely do. What it boils down to is that some of her songs — mostly on Brat — just make my ears and brain feel good. And some are pretty weird sounding for ultra-mainstream pop.

Good stuff!

choc e-Claire 12.31.2024 01:13 AM

I finally got around to Brat after you all lost your minds. It's not bad.

Anyway, with the caveat I barely listened to anything new this year, samlrc - A Lonely Sinner gets my nod for the #1.

OK boomer.
:D;)

You know, I thought the Beth Gibbons album was gonna slay everybody else and be the "consensus" album of the year, but xcx.

Not sure what the problem is with silk scarves (didn't Miles Davis use to wear some?), but the delicate bullshit rockstars mentioned above could learn a thing or two from someone like Steve Earle. Here's a comment posted on Dimeadozen recently:
I first met Steve while getting some ice cream on the River Walk in San Antonio, TX around this time period [1988]. He was wearing a very unique jean jacket with Copperhead Road on back. He was so cool to me and my buddy that saw him on David Letterman show and were blown away. We hung out for a bit and then he said..whats your name and how many tickets you want? Sure enough there were 4 tickets for us at will call at the show that weekend. I stood right up front with a pretty rough crowd( i was a 18 yr kid among men)..haha. He rocked out and was sweating all over the place and me. At the end he gave me a big high five and smile. True story.

That Beth Gibbons albums is incredible. I’d rank it well above Brat, which probably wouldn’t be in my top 10 of the year. Gibbons definitely would, if I were to make such a list.

All right, 2024's #1 for me: Wendy Eisenberg - Viewfinder. "Changing isn't healing ... Healing takes forever ..."

Toilet & Bowels 01.03.2025 10:21 PM

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Her album Auto was my favourite record in whatever year it was it came out (2019 maybe?)

2020. See, that's the thing with these jazz/improv/whachamacallit musicians, ya can't keep up with 'em. Each year they're on fifty bands, they "appear" in a hundred other artists' records, and then you have their "solo" albums. They're impossible! ;)

Anyway everybody here should give Viewfinder a spin it's so touching and tender but wild and noisy but serene but not lookit just go to Bandcamp listen to it and call me in the morning even better BUY IT you'll get it in hi-res YOW!
