i just started The Air Conditioned Nightmare-By Henry Miller
i just read the 15 page preface and its pretty good stuff. he is an amazing writer, i hope the rest of the book is as good!

nomadicfollower 08.24.2006 04:09 PM

I've wanted to read some Henry Miller, but I've read that when he begins philosophizing it gets quite dry. (I believe I read that in a Bukowski poem.)

Thomas Wolfe- Look Homeward, Angel

Norma J 08.28.2006 01:54 AM

I stumbled across a bunch of Kerouac novels and journals and bio's at a secondhand book store today. Bought half of them and will buy the rest weekly.

Also among the books I found were 2 Charles Bukowski: Letter vol 1 & 2.
Also some Ginsberg.

Great finds.

Murakami - Wind-Up-Bird. or whatever it's called in the English translation.

nomadicfollower 09.16.2006 01:16 PM

Celine's influence seems to be pretty widespread. This novel's quite modern for it's time.

static-harmony 09.16.2006 01:43 PM

Nova Express by William S. Burroughs.

Katy 09.16.2006 02:35 PM

I'm reading "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson and "Wonderland Avenue" by Danny Sugerman. (Learning all about neatrons, protons, Iggy Pop and heroin.)

I've started reading more than one book at a time. Something I NEVER used to do. I don't know if it's a good thing or not.

I read "The Consolations of Philosophy" and "Status Anxiety" by Alain de Botton last week. I liked the Montaigne chapter of the first, only some of the latter.

Cantankerous 09.16.2006 02:49 PM

i never read more than one book at a time. i can't consciously focus on more than one.

Me either.

Speaking of modern novels, though (my other post), can someone reccomend some? 50's or so and up.
I'm stuck in the past. I haven't read a novel that wasn't written before the 50's in some time and I hardly know any good authors in the latter 20th century. (I have read the quite obvious ones like On the Road, Fear and Loathing and the such)
Reccomendations will be much appreciated.
Oh yeah, any genre.

ondskan 09.16.2006 04:31 PM

Orwells 1984.

Read it like 5 times now. Can't get enough.

k-krack 09.16.2006 04:42 PM

Ways of Seeing- John Berger

youthoftomorrow 09.16.2006 05:22 PM

a collection of Philip K. Dick short stories
Count Zero by William Gibson
and some stories for my Sci-fi/Fantasy Lit class

Norma J 09.16.2006 06:24 PM

Charles Bukowski: Selected letters 1960s-1970s (Living on Luck vol.2)

And have been contemplating for a few weeks now to start one of the many Kerouac novels I bought.

Just finished Bram Stoker's "Dracula" will start either Dostovesky's "House of the Dead" or Thomas Hardy's "Jude the Obscure".

How was it? I actually picked up a copy of this last week, but have yet to get around to reading it.

Cantankerous 09.16.2006 08:48 PM

i actually like that book a lot.

nomadicfollower 09.16.2006 08:50 PM

I take it it's good then.
That is, if I can trust cantankerous's opinion.

Cantankerous 09.16.2006 08:52 PM

nomadicfollower 09.16.2006 08:53 PM

Umm? I'd say green.

Alex's Trip 09.16.2006 08:54 PM

Huh, so you were going somewhere with that.
Fine. I take it's a good book and I look forward to reading it.

It's alright. I was a bit disappointed, personally. (But it was better than "The Consolations Of Philosophy".) I think Alain de Botton just quotes other people too much and doesn't have enough of a sense of humour for me. His writing style is nothing special, he just knows a lot and can quote it. He's a great researcher, I'll give him that.

I did enjoy the final chapter on "Bohemia" though.. but mostly for the subject matter (rather than his prose or his insight into the subject.)

LifeDistortion 09.16.2006 10:20 PM

"Dracula" is a good read. A lot of people may not like it as its written in a series of letters but I just read it like it was a first person narrative. I saw the Francis Ford Copolla film years before and its a bit difficult to not think of it, but over all its a good book. Definately a must read, its a classic.

Toilet & Bowels 09.16.2006 10:25 PM

it was assigned reading for me in eighth grade and i could barely penetrate the crazy wording. i was convinced Dickens just made up his own grammar rules. i imagine it would be significantly easier to read now.

other than that, it was a pretty good story.

HaydenAsche 09.16.2006 10:56 PM

School books. Reading for fun is so last year.

nomadicfollower 09.16.2006 11:02 PM

Since reading for school is so cool.

HaydenAsche 09.16.2006 11:04 PM

Not cool but fucking required. I don't want to fail.

nomadicfollower 09.16.2006 11:04 PM

Since not failing school is so cool.

HaydenAsche 09.16.2006 11:06 PM

I know. Amounting to something is so underrated.

Cantankerous 09.16.2006 11:07 PM
