Surface bars are very similar to barbells but their design is tweaked so that the skin underneath does not raise abnormally. The shape of surface bars resembles a big staple (and the two ends of the staple would be protruding from your skin - the conjoing piece of metal is under the skin).This is the traditional method of surface piercings. The little bit of metal jutting out of your skin is where the ball is screwed on.
