I like the "la la la la la la" on leaky lifeboat. There are some very "pop" parts on this album but it doesn't stink up the place like rather ripped did.

One of my favorite moments of the whole album. They were very smart
about indulging their pop urges this time 'round.

sarramkrop 04.30.2009 05:12 PM

Well, hopefully this record will finally get them out of the irony of 'indie' ghettos. They haven't been an underground band in years, about time the world embraces this as mainstream too.

Murray Street vs The Eternal:

Lee Songs:

Karenology's a beautiful Lee piece- among my favorites, but the Lee pieces on The Eternal are growing on me.

What We Know + Walkin Blues ??? Karenology

Kim Rockers:

Sacred Trickster + Calming the Snake > Plastic Girl

Thurston Rockers:

No Way and Thunderclap for Bobbi Pyn vs nothing. Some could say that it's a good thing that there are no Thurston rockers on Murray Street. I'm undecided. Compared to some other Thurston "rockers" like Sleepin' Around or Junkie's Promise, No Way and Thunderclap are pretty good, but Silver Rocket, 100%, or Teenage Riot they are not.

No Way + Thunderclap for Bobby Pyn ??? no Thurston rockers.

Thurston Songs:

Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style is a favorite of mine, but I'd say that Antenna, Leaky Lifeboat are better than Empty Page, Rain on Tin, and Disconnection Notice, while I'd put Poison Arrow at the same level as them.

Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style ??? Leaky Lifeboat + Antenna > Empty Page + Rain on Tin + Disconnection Notice = Poison Arrow

Kim Songs:
Sympathy For the Strawberry is also a favorite of mine off Murray Street, but Massaging the History's really beautiful too. Malibu Gas Station isn't as good, but it's still a good song.

Sympathy for the Strawberry ??? Massaging the History > Malibu Station

Looking at that I'd say they're probably equal, at least to my tastes.

so is 'malibu gas station' about britney spears...?

(sorry if this has been discussed!)

i am going to listen to it before bed again tonight and see what i can hear. interesting...

i did not read this entire thread, so i apologize too if this has been discussed already... but are these the actual lyrics for sacred trickster? (see below) and according to the Kim interview Moshe just posted- the artist, Yves Klein, referred to himself as 'the sacred trickster' and that is how Kim wants to be remembered... i love it.

I want you to levitate me
Don't you love me yet?
Press up against the amp
Turn up the treble, don't forget

Getting dizzy, sitting around
Sacred trickster in another tight sound

I wish I could be music on a tree
Noise Nomads and me
Levitating on the ground

What's it like to be a girl in a band?
I don't quite understand
That's so quaint to hear
I feel so faint my dear

Doing nothing, sitting around
Sacred trickster in another tight sound

I wish I could be music on a tree
Noise Nomads and me
Levitating, spinning around

Chris Lawrence 05.01.2009 03:16 AM

hmm, search for 'lindsay lohan malibu gas station' turns up, not a lot.. search for 'britney spears malibu gas station' turns up a whole shitload. i can't quote the lyrics at the moment but they seemed applicable to britney's incident...

mil_pl 05.01.2009 03:50 AM

what was her incident?

musefreek 05.01.2009 04:47 AM

some of you go on and on about this album being nurse v.2.

i don't hear it. not at all... eternal is much more upbeat than nurse and not nearly as reflective. it's more straightforward rock song.

nurse v.2 it ain't....

(loving the album by the way, but nurse is still better :) )

musefreek 05.01.2009 09:03 AM

righto, i've listened to this album about 6 times now and it's starting to click. REALLY getting into it.

damn, my obsession with SY is starting all over again....

this band has been so consistently PHENOMENAL since murray street....

Marc Spitz from Uncut magazine in article about SY's new album summarized it nicely:

"The Eternal certainly sounds like like a band enjoying new-found freedom (in connection quitting Geffen). It covers Sonic Youth net skilfully, with two-minute punk rave-ups ("Sacred Trickster"), oblique art treaties ("Anti-Orgasm") and Byzantine space jams (the nine-minute "Massage The History"). It feels like a Best Of..., but with all new songs."

I wouldn't say it is Nurse 2.0, but I think people mean more in terms of guitar tones. There are a lot of the same types of tones on The Eternal, but the songs are very different.

Hello my friends
i need some time off some unnerving work here at home.
I will use this time off to comment and rate (omfg i hate that but hey)
this new Sonik Yooff album:
First of all i have to say i'm totally MESMERIZED that they could create such a mindmelding grower. This is no WM or ATL. But i totally sucked it in and it's doing me good literally.

1) sacred trickster: wow. This rocks my cock. Wild dual gtr action here. Terribly addictive and to the point. At first i thought it lacked the usual skronk but i get it elsewhere so there. perfect start. >>> 8,5
2) anti orgasm: i'm sooooo into this. rebellious semi feministic ranting in there. The structure is kind of out there, which i really like. I like what i call the "fucking part" when they both go ha hu ha hu; sexy. The outro is gorgeous. Funky bass . merci mark Ibold. >>> 9
3) Leaky Lifeboat: gotta love the harmonics, the funky wah, the upbeatness. the lalalalas >>> 8
4) Antenna: oh well what can i say. Gorgeous chorus, nice new gtr tones courtesy of Lee. Very pretty drumming too. This one is a total win. >>> 9
5) What we know: classic Lee singing. Not a fan at first. This one grew on me relatively quick cuz it's got a weird power to it. It's funny cuz this bass is not SY. Nice track. >>> 7,5
6) Caming the snake: gotta like the skronk here. Like the Thurston break too. Bass is all dissonant. I like Kim's "aoaoaoao". Didn't like the live version, but i get it now. Raw and heavy.>>> 7,5
7) Poison Arrow: Weird gtr tones!! Weird Lou Reed feel!!!! Nice layers of static in the background. I like the way Kim and T.bone sing together in this song. Very nice song, very VU, yes; pretty: >>> 7,5
8) Malibu gas Station: I nearly cried like a sissy when i listened to the intro. Lee must have listened to some ATL beforehand. The rest is "Sunday"-ish. Me likey a lot. The way the song bounces and gets really catchy after a couple of minutes (instrumental part w/solo). I would have loved a come back of the intro as an outro and some light drumming, but maybe that was too obvious, o well amazing >>> 9,5!!
9) Thunderclap: very Psychic Hearts. Nice dual gtr halfway through. Efficient track>>> 8
10) No way: very Psychic also. This one goes pretty well with Thundeclap, Like the solo.>>>8
11) Walking Blue: at first i thought it didn't sound like an SY song at all. But that's because this song is already a fucking CLASSIC. Wow, what can i say? Outstanding songwriting and gtrs. >>> 9,5
12) Massage: whoever said this was TOTA-like was completely right. VERY nice outro to the LP. Very subtile. Nice layers>> 9

Once again, i'm sorry but NOT ONE BAND IN THE WORLD can put out an album THAT strong after 30 years of rock n roll. I'm totally in awe.
there.
