It's kind of difficult to say. That one (Rain Tree Crow) is most of the members of Japan trying to fuse their own improvised ideas into one thing. Its sound is most influenced by what Sylvian had been experimeniting with, and is a precursor to what his career would develop into, really. It's a solid enough LP, with some standout tracks.

7/10

I think that album can't be used as a scapegoat for his more interesting(See Fennesz collaborations etc) music that much.It was pretty clear what the direction he was going to go to was even by the time that album came out.

Hip Priest 09.13.2006 05:25 PM

I agree. While you were typing that, in fact, I was editing my post. No scapegoating intended - it's a logical step along Sylvian's path.

porkmarras 09.13.2006 05:28 PM

Sylvian is kinda a sacred musician in a way.I don't listen to him that much because i never go to church. But on the rare occasions...........

Hip Priest 09.13.2006 05:30 PM

...his stuff can be magical, never better demonstrated than on the 'Approaching Silence' installation pieces.

Did you hear the Nine Horses project from last year? It's a David Sylvian, Steve Jansen, and Burnt Friedman collaboration.

porkmarras 09.13.2006 05:31 PM

Edited post above.

I haven't.He's one the very few musicians that i have real respect for because he really lives outside the radar and HE IS happy with it.My head says :'Do listen to Sylvian more' but then it gets turned around by other things.I got into him because my brother used to play me his records a lot and as much as i grew up to like his music and respect him (greatly),somehow i've drifted into other things.Still.....one to be behold.
