I was reading Our Band Could Be Your Life last night and Azzerad mentions that the name came from Fred Smith and reggae groups. Not that it makes it true...The first time I read the "origin of SY's name" story I saw that their name came from The Sonics.

Fred "Sonic" and Big Youth is what I have heard
