MY AIM IS TRUE(1977)- Always makes top 100 lists, which pisses me off because it dismisses nearly two decades of other stuff. Still, it IS a good spin.

THIS YEAR'S MODEL- 1st w/ Attractions. Choat is wise to praise this mighty aggressive record.

ARMED FORCES- Weird, Bowie inspired songs about politics and sex.

GET HAPPY!!!- 20 r n' b influenced tunes. Classic.

TRUST- This is where things get interesting. Nods to Bo Diddly and Patsy Cline, plus a deut w/ some guy from Squeeze.

IMPERIAL BEDROOM- Lavish production from Beatles' engineer. Most of first side is flawless.

PUNCH THE CLOCK- I don't like it, but many people do. We can all agree that the song "Shipbuilding" is one of the greatest ever written.

GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD- Generally considered his lowest point.

KING OF AMERICA- Acoustic tribute to Americana. Timeless.

BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE- A stripped down rocker. Half-good, I'd say. "I Want You" is classic.

SPIKE- I like this ecclectic one alot. Plays w/ Allen Toussaint, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and members of Tom Waits' band. Most political.

MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE- Crap.

JULIET LETTERS- w/ Brodsky Quartet. An epistilary 20 song cycle about letters written to Juliet Capulet. Some really catchy shit.

BRUTAL YOUTH- A celebrated reunion w/ Attractions.

ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY- Pretty low key. So so.

WHEN I WAS CRUEL- Roundly praised.

DELIVERY MAN- A more electric nod to Americana than King. Again, some instant classics.

I've skipped a lot of stuff. B-side compilations, albums co-produced w/ lots of people (Burt Bachrach for example), best ofs, soundtrack work, a ballet!

so unfortunate that some of you guys don't like Costello.
i'm not his number one fan but i will stick up for the man.
i've only really listened to My Aim is True to Get Happy!! and lots of songs of those albums are incredible, especially Armed Forces and Get Happy!!
Black and White World, B Movie, The Imposter, Senior Service and Green Shirt come to mind, etc etc etc.
those Attractions albums are classic.
i guess he's not for everyone but he's pretty damn catchy and extremely musical. good shit.
i don't hate him at all so i'm with you.

i don't think he writes that great of melodies, he doesn't write that great of lyrics, i dont' care for his instrumentation.

Well, then you do understand, because therein lied the whole point! Costello was enough of a punk back then to want to say fuck you to his audience by putting the gods of electronic noise on for them to deal with first. Suicide revelled in pissing tossers off, so they surely enjoyed that hatred. I read an interview with Vega where her reminissed about running into Costello in a laundramat on the tour the day after one of the biggest riots when the show had to be called off. Costello thanked him, and asked if they could do it again that night, as he was extremely worn out from the tour and rather enjoyed the night off.
