It's nowhere near their best. It definitely doesn't hook you in, like most first albums. It's something so ridiculously indie that you have to buy it later on.

This is funny because it's true. |
I started with Slanted and Enchanted and it remains my favorite Pavement album. They're all good though.
|
The first 2 "serious" albums I ever had were "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" and "Experimental....." my cool older cousin did me a tape with one on each side, so personally I'd go for "Crooked Rain" first.
|
Get "Crooked Rain" first. LA's desert origins is dirt cheap and its really cool to immerse yourself in the whole era with all the fucking b-sides and outtakes. "
thats how i got into pavement. Then when i got slanted I was like "What the hell is this" ...its alot more spazzed and challenging then most people admit, I mean there is plenty of perfect pop but fuck its so out of tune and trebly,.. definetely crooked rain first, |

No way! Sooo fucking good! It was my first, and remains my favourite. |
Chronoligocal but get the deluxe editions of all of them.
|
Just get them in order of release. I've only heard S&E, CR,CR, and WZ. They are all good. I always liked S&E but never as much as everyone else. In the last week, I've been listening to it and now I like it more than I ever did. I still think CR,CR is better though. But there's no use comparing two different albums. The first three are very good.
Get the deluxe reissues too; Matador has done a great job with those. |
slanted & enchanted needs to be listened to repeatedly, especially driving around, and you will be slammed by the furious bad-assness of the fucking genius album.
It is the greatest thing they ever did in My opinion, besides YR KILLING ME! YR KILLING ME AGAIN! |
Now you've got the perfect re-issues by Matador, so buy them in chronologic order to appreciate the genius of this band.
I can't choose which is my favourite. it depends on my mood. Have a look at the DVD "The Slow Century", a good vision of the band, with Spiral Stairs ass at Lollapalooza... |
I only have Slanted and Enchanted, and I found it a little disappointing, really, after all that I'd read about it. Its a good record, don't get me wrong, but not quite as good as everyone says it is. I will buy more Pavement though because I am IN LOVE with Stephen Malkmus' self titled solo album...

vBulletin Message You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to afterthefact again. |

that explains everything. if you love sm's solo shit you are not going to dig westing nor slanted too much. sm's solo shit is weak pussy pop country music bullshit! |

I think its great. And its very narrow-minded of you to dismiss it so quickly because you think its "pussy pop". I can listen to hardcore noise with the best of them, its not anything like that that stops me from loving Slanted and Enchanted, I just think the songs weren't as brillaint as I expected them to be. |
my first taste of pavement was a b-side to crooked rain called "raft" that's just as good as any of their a-sides.
but go with crooked rain. gold soundz is one of the best songs of the '90s and ever. |

That's what I thought at first. But I've been listening to it a lot recently to try to get into it and now I think it's awesome. I always thought it was good, but now it's amazing. |
I already posted in here... but here it is...
Pavement is honestly one of the fucking greatest bands of all-time. There is no way around it, they simply fucking rock. They have this fucked up thing... like, time-release love of them, but if yr patient, they creep up on you, and you fucking love them. Everyone should listen to Pavement. |
The quality of their B-sides is amazing.
|
gold soundz is incredibly addictive.
|
i just find all of malkmus' solo stuff to be so boring. just bland genero-rock
