Without genres it would be so hard to find music you want and like. Go into a record store, I know to avoid the back sections of world, death metal, and gangsta rap music.

i like the promise ring stuff i've heard, i don't like the joan of arc stuff i've heard so far. maybe you can point me out to stuff to listen to.

and i haven't heard owen or the owls. (i think those have something to do with it right?)

Well, Cap'n Jazz is actually as annoying as any of the "shopping mall emo" bands you mentioned. :D

i was talking about that to a dj friend of mine yesterday.

he was telling me about psychedelic trance and how it's now a shitty scene, with drunken people doing violent stuff on raves and shit. i told him that maybe they should start a new scene now that psych-trance has becomed watered down and generic; he told me he loved that kind of music so much he couldn't switch sounds and do what the hip thing is now; we then started to discuss the finer points of genres and subgenres within electronica, then i suggested him he could take the sounds he wants, try to come up with something new and original to add and then call it something else, and sell it like the hot new shit that's gonna take over where psych trance is leaving.

people in electronica take subgenres (the titles, not the sounds so much) much more seriously than people in rock. i'm really thankful there's no such things going on in other genres. to me, that's so retarded, it's way off in the red

paul oakenfold and paul van dyk are getting props in here? you mean, these dudes who get paid close to millions of dollars just for pushing play on a cd. and when they try to come up with some original songs, they just play the demos they get when they buy a new synthesizer.

I generally don't use genres. I have no idea what to classify half of the music I listen to as anyways.

I also scarcely use the terms "underrated" and "overrated".

I prefer the terms "good" and "complete shite".
