The Machinist - if you need a movie to help you appreciate Fight Club more, it's this one
Renaissance - a plot trying to be deep but failing, a little less "wannabe Bladerunner" would have been nice

Heaven- The film directed by the director of "Run Lola Run" and staring Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi, both good actors, good director, (at least "Run Lola Run" and "The Princess and the Warrior" were good), and the concept came from the polish director Kieslowski who did the amazing Three Colors Trilogy, how could that movie be so underwhelming?

I think it was made so these people didn't have to see movies with Meg Ryan in them.

I thought it was OK, but not as great as the trailers made me think it was gonna be. Without a doubt it is totally a "date movie" though.

It is definitely a "date movie."

i know that this is a really unpopular opinion, but i was not that blown away by blade runner.
and tarence malick's the new world, was although visually pretty, and great directing, boring.

99.9% of movies i saw were disappointing.

pretty much any movie that gets a bunch of positive reviews ended up disappointing me (note the past tense here). see: donnie darko, the machinist (seconded!), requiem for a dream, etc. also, movies that people on the sonic youth board tend to like for some ungodly reason, like a scanner darkly, are fucking terrible. also, even movies i know i'll love end up just mildly pleasing me (see electric dragon 80000v). i guess that's what happens when you watched 300+ new movies a year...

that being said, films that hadn't disappointed me are usually quite low key and don't have people jacking off over them every day... films like body melt, slime city, street trash, rock n roll nightmare, night train to terror, combat shock, neon maniacs, the demon, pinnochio 964, psycho cop 2, happiness of the katakuris, incredible melting man, der todesking, burning moon, videodrome, killing spree, unmasked pt. 25, maniac, maniac cop 2, gore gore girls, deep red, rubber's lover, ya know.. gems like that.

so, i simply started assuming that most films coming out are going to be godawful... and when movies like the matrix and pirates of the caribean -- i'm talking really awful shit movies with no redeeming qualities -- make money, you just know there are going to be sequels and ripoffs, so you can assume it's all going to suck. so, there you go: problem solved. no more disappointment.

just go into films blindly, assuming it may not be good, don't expect anything, and you might be surprised. or just stop watching typical mainstream hollywood bullshit, since only about 0.0001% of those films are good (seriously, what's the last "big" movie that's come out that's actually been good? american psycho, memento, seven, the game, fight club.. uh... was "mysterious skin" a big movie? I don't think so.. but.. if so, that counts...... uh... yeah, I'm really drawing blanks here...). films, music, art, books, television, etc. haven't really been amazing or creative in any way since around the late 80's/early 90's. You can dispute this, but think of all the mainstream films back then that weren't disappointing. Aliens! Blade Runner! Terminator! Jesus.. it's crazy.

Expect the worst.

Isn't that the one with the guy who gets off on car crashes?

I wanna see!

atsonicpark 08.07.2007 01:46 AM

Yeah, it's based on the awesome (and so far, only one I've read by..) J.G. Ballard book. That was an awkward sentence.

James Spader IS hot. secretary is amazing...

Silent Dan Speaks 08.07.2007 02:46 AM

Hmm, this other crash sounds like a sexy fight club. I might have to check it out.
