Actually, I'll amend what I said - Mike Patton should go into radio as a voice actor and leave music behind.

Yes. You have to be very careful when selecting from his releases.

( in my opinion ) Peeping tom = Garbage, Tomahawk = Garbage except for their most recent. Mr Bungle = self titled album is mostly garbage. Yeah man Peeping Tom, if people tell you that shit is amazing, they've got some problems

Eh yeah I'd have to kind of agree. Fantomas is definately talented, and AMAZING live. ( I mean holy shit, they are an incredible live band ). It's just not the type of music I would put on at my place and just enjoy listening to.

Rob Instigator 01.18.2008 05:01 PM

I only enjoy the first two mr bungle records. (california stunk it up hardcore)
and the Real thing and Angeldust by faith No More.

I do not liek fatomas, nor do I like the lounge act nonsense either

angeldust rules all

after that they booted Jim their guitarist. then never sounded the same.

the first mr bungle album was the single most insane thing I ever heard when I was 18 back in the day.

atsonicpark 01.18.2008 06:01 PM

california's great. some of bungle's best songs. not a single bad song in the bunch. self-titled blew my mind at 14, but nowadays it's too plodding and funky in parts. volante is the masterpiece.

tomahawk's boring as fuck, though, and peeping tom is probably the worst thing i've ever heard. the kaada/patton release, again, is probably the best thing he's ever been on.

atsonicpark 01.18.2008 06:48 PM

I think Fantomas is pretty awful except for Director's Cut which is strangely brilliant. One of their albums is mostly ambient and the other two follow a ridiculous formula of "quiet part with weird studio effects, INSANE SCREAMING MATHY RIDICULOUS NOISE ROCK FOR THREE SECONDS quiet and slow ohhhing and ahhhing SCREAMING RIDIUCLOUS CRASH CRASH CRASH." etc. for 50 minutes at a time. It's like an early-Boredoms-meets-black-metal parody or something, and it's really fucking stupid. And what's hilarious is how many great parts and great riffs they come up with, only to do NOTHING with them. It's like "avant garde noise rock for the sake of being avant garde noise rock".

batreleaser 01.19.2008 12:00 AM

i randomly saw peeping tom on rollins show. it sounded more like matchbox 20 than anything experimental. and i own one tomahawk alblum and i hate it. ipecac records is a good label tho. some good shit on there. i like dalek.

Everyneurotic 01.19.2008 02:03 PM

ok, here i go again...

a) mike patton is a bad rip off of yamatsuka eye. that's undebatable, i'm just stating the obvious.

b) mike patton would have stuck playing rap metal and ska if he had never met john zorn, not only does zorn give him credibility and guidance, but without naked city, painkiller, et al. there wouldn't have been a guide for most of patton's music. take fantomas, first album is a wild explosion of spazz metal with weird voices, mimicking naked city's moments with eye, second album, director's cut, are reinterpretations of movie themes, something john zorn has dedicated himself to for almost thirty years. delirium cordia is a big sprawling difficult song, in theory reflecting later naked city albums. suspended animation goes back to the nc's torture garden/boredoms formula.

mr bungle was modelled after the first naked city album in that it jumps styles at every moment, the only real innovation is that mr bungle flips genres in the same song, while nc usually went a genre a song.

patton is just a pretentious asshole that stumbled upon improv/avant garde and wild japanese music and tries too hard to stay there. he's very full of shit when he talks in interviews and his collaborations are forced at best...

...HOWEVER...

...there's a chunk of his music that doesn't suck, mainly because his main talent it's definitely not his voice (seriously, go listen to boredoms or ufo or die or any of eye's bands to see where he copies his shit. then go listen to maja raktje or ami yoshida to listen to people who really take voice as a radical instrument to a whole new level...fuck, go listen to pandit pran nath), it's finding great people to play with, his bands are fucking supergrousp. fantomas: buzz osbourne, dave lombardo (probably the best thrash drummer along with voivod's away) and trevor dunn, mr. bungle are all virtuosos except him and tomahawk are duane denison, john stainer and kevin rutmanis (one of histories most overlooked bassists); had he started bands with people that weren't such great musicians, not only technically but also raw and without bullshit, then he would have been long forgotten as the douchbag that gave the world shitty rap metal.

personally, i love disco volante, i really love mit gas (because it's more a jesus lizard album than anything) and some of fantomas stuff, mainly because instrumentally it's amazing.

he is always the weakest link in all of his bands and, frankly, the albums he has ruined by him being present in them have outnumbered the ones that are actually good.

atsonicpark 01.19.2008 08:42 PM

Right, and that's a reason why I tell people to listen to secret chiefs 3 instead of Mr. Bungle. If you look in the liner notes for Disco Volante, Trevor Dunn and Trey Spruance (America's best guitarist probably) wrote every song on that album except one that was written by Patton.

Don't remember if he played bass or drums.

I'm old.

i think courtney love sang with them for like a day in the mid eighties

batreleaser 01.20.2008 02:02 AM

no dount, mike patton has the world's best friends. so mike whatd you do today? well, first i met up for coffee with john zorn, than drove up to buzz osbornes house to get stoned and listen to records, then dave lombardo told me he was thinking about starting a jazzish speed metal band and i said ok. in my imagination that's how mike patton's days go.

and yes she did, mike bordin clarified that

PAULYBEE2656 01.20.2008 07:35 AM

i love you marcos but i cant see any jesus lizard in mit gas... maybe i have to listen again..... no denying the talent of the band mebers like stainer tho.

atsonicpark 01.20.2008 08:19 AM

I can see it.

It's basically all denison's band anyway.

Everyneurotic 01.20.2008 02:50 PM

yeah, the riffs are all denison's and they are quite jesus lizard-like.

the rhythm section for that band is also amazing, it punches like the lizard but has it's own sound.

of course, i like it with my lip bitten and my eyes closed mostly, because patton spends the whole time in the brink of ruining it with his voice. sometimes he sings melodically, sometimes he tries to be a tamed down yow.

the first tomahawk is very thrown together, i don't see the appeal at all, it's way too generic. and anonymous, patton drops a big load all over the place! sometimes duane and john do some great dirges (sometimes they too go for stereotypical cherokee music that's almost comical and almost pathetic) but patton mostly shits on it every time he opens his mouth, there's like two songs out of the sixteen or whatever that are any good.

forkimified 01.20.2008 06:15 PM

My fav is still Faith No More - King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime.

I like some of the stuff on Angel Dust, but the whole album sounds fairly 'plastic'.

batreleaser 01.20.2008 07:13 PM

i hate that alblum mit gas. it doesnt compare to jesus lizard one ioda.

PAULYBEE2656 01.21.2008 02:01 PM

ok denison is certainly in there but thats it... i actually think qui are marginally better than jesus lizard anyway... off the point i know but.....

duuude, i like the new alblum, but lets give it a few more records to make that statement. jesus lizard are legends yknow. but i respect your opinion nonetheless. i actually saw qui a few months back, i had never been to see david yow perform before, hes still a fucking maniac.
