No fucking way Thurston is McCartney. McCartney was such a pussy, he always wrote the boring songs. He'd be Lennon, for sure. Switch that, and the rest are fine.
I think for the influence on the group, Lee might even be Lennon, because he seems to be the more... weird, experimental and artsy kind of guy, you knwo what I mean?

Cantankerous 03.09.2008 08:58 PM

no, lee would be george harrison then
george harrison is the man behind within you without you

McCartney wrote the boring songs!? What about Helter Skelter!?

Jakebert 03.09.2008 09:22 PM

He got to the bottom of the slide.

Lurker 03.09.2008 10:53 PM

Haha yeah

Both bands named albums after the roads where their recording studios were
Abbey Road
Murray Street

ZEROpumpkins 03.09.2008 11:10 PM

I wouldn't agree. There were bands that sound like the Beatles, but I've never heard a band that sounds like Sonic Youth.

uhler 03.09.2008 11:24 PM

husker du is the beatles of our generation. even though they came from a generation before me, but whatever.

Style 03.10.2008 01:12 AM

Are we talking personalities or status? I feel that SY is underrated compared to the Beatles, so therefore they cannot be the Beatles of our generation.

pbradley 03.10.2008 01:40 AM

The Beatles went from catchy pop to experimental psychedelic stuff.

Sonic Youth began with nightmarish psychedelic stuff to catchy pop.

ZEROpumpkins 03.10.2008 02:48 AM

IMO Guided by Voices are the Beatles of our generation. Just listen to Game of Pricks - it even sounds like it was recorded in the '60's!

Rob Instigator 03.10.2008 09:24 AM

the beatles were a ROCK band people, just because our ears are suffused with insanity and harsh noise does not mean that the "gentle" sounds of the beatles rock are POP music.
pop is celine dion, people singing standards, people making disposable mass market msuic. adults HATED the beatles, they rocked fOR the YOUTH

SONIC YOUTH

sonic truth

I ahve always thought of sonic youth as my Beatles, opening up their fan's ears and letting them see a wide spectrum of musical language.

sonic youth and beatles are the two greatest musical influences in my sonic life.

Rob Instigator 03.10.2008 09:25 AM

the statemen t the beatles of our generation" has less to do with the sound of their music than with their influence and wide ranging compositions. dumbasses.

barnaclelapse 03.10.2008 09:28 AM

I keep meaning to get a Captain Beefheart record...

johnnywinternoshow 03.10.2008 10:37 AM

You're saying that assuming that Sonic Youth are experimental for their day so the comparison is incorrect right? But Sonic Youth are hardly experimental in comparison to loads of other rock bands, and then there's all that Noise Music, and there's loads of Jazz that's a lot more experimental than Sonic Youth, and none of these genres compare to the experimentation done and still being done in the Classical world.

So I think the comparison is fair especially if you take into account Sonic Youths popularity compared to all those more experimental groups and The Beatles similar relative popularity. The beatles were way more experimental than a lot of stuff being produced at the time. No one else did so much for recording techniques. Revolution 9? Tomorrow Never Knows?

Lurker 03.10.2008 04:30 PM

Remember also the huge variety of the Beatles music compared to those other bands.
