I have to disagree. Mono, to my ears, are one of the most boring bands currently around. Definitely not up my alley.

Pfff. In my book, Happy Songs is second only to MYT. That's not counting Ten Rapid mind.

nicfit 07.23.2008 06:28 AM

happy songs has a weird production that detracts quite a lot of impact from the songs, imo. Live it's pretty great, even if ,as on record, there are a few bits a bit too new-ageish... last one I liked quite a lot, especially live. They play in italy at the end of this week, but I think I won't make it (400 kms from my city).
The fact that this new track is n°5 in the tracklist makes me think the rest of the album might be quite heavy, I have this weird idea in my mind that tracks 4, 7 and 9 are the defining ones in most albums (not just by mogway, by any band). I know some records don't even have 7 songs, but you got the idea.
this theory proved to be somewhat accurate on a number of occasions.

The only thing that bugs me about Happy Songs is that one track (I think it's 2nd or 3rd on side 2 of the LP) that sounds like an instrumental Smashing Pumpkins song. Other than that it's great.
Mr Beast was decent, but it kinda struck me as sounding like a mathematical average of the previous 4 albums condensed into one.

k-krack 07.23.2008 12:35 PM

I loved Mr. Beast, a lot. But to be honest, I haven't even got any other Mogwai albums (kill me now), which bums me out, but I still love Mr. Beast a ton. (Yes, I have heard CODY, but not in a very long time.)
This new song doesn't even really sound like Mogwai, I'm looking forward to what the rest of the album will be like. (not based on this song, I kinda dig this one, but Mogwai can do better!)

I often find track 6 is my favourite on the album.... just sayin'....

_slavo_ 07.23.2008 12:49 PM

oh, that new song is crappy.
but good news, they play in Vienna in November!

sarramkrop 07.24.2008 05:53 PM

I heard one song off it and I wish i hadn't.

nicfit 07.25.2008 04:26 AM

Life is hard, huh?
Sarram, do you have some more scans of your drawings to post in the art thread? Yesterday I was thinking about your older ones and kinda wished you posted some more.

sarramkrop 07.26.2008 09:04 AM

I heard one song off it and it sounds like the same melody that they have been playing now for a quite a few years.

SonicBebs 07.26.2008 04:03 PM

I really like Happy Songs

And track 6 is my favourite off mr Beast. But other than maybe 2 tracks i dont really like it. which is a shame cause the 'Gwai are awsome

PAULYBEE2656 07.26.2008 04:53 PM

cant wait for this album.... i adore young team but mr beast was a kind of a let down to be honest...

mono... funny story.. my mate in dublin who promotes ultra cool gigs, (melt banana, shellac, liars, acid mothers, pissed jeans, caribou, battles, etc etc) brought his girlfirend and 6 year old daughter and mates out to dinner with acid mothers temple the day after a gig in dublin. amt have no real english at all so they spent 2 hours over dinner in complete polite silence as the general conversation whittled on....the subject of bands arose and my mate timo mentioned the mono gig that just happened....... makotos ears pricked and uttered 2 words, his only two words of the night, apart from thank you..... "MONO...........................baaaaaaaaaaaaaad!"

thought it was a funny story.

StevOK 07.26.2008 07:50 PM

baaaaaaaaaaaaaad as in "good" or baaaaaaaaaaaaaad as in "bad"?

PAULYBEE2656 07.27.2008 04:46 AM

baaaaad as in shite, terrible, boring, fuckwits!

_slavo_ 07.27.2008 06:29 AM

spot on, spot on

nicfit 07.27.2008 06:33 AM

i like them, but the more "classic music" path they're in now can be indeed a bit boring. But songs like the kidnapper bell are amazing(for example).

PAULYBEE2656 07.27.2008 11:12 AM

i am the only one alive that really dislikes you are here.... i thought it was boring as hell. one more step and you die is a great album and falling snow and other stuff with airy fairy words which mean diddly squant when translated from japanese to english album is ok as well.

SYRFox 07.28.2008 07:00 AM

Another new song! I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3GMDG5WB

It's an amazing one, really beautiful, can't wait for the album!

nicfit 07.28.2008 07:13 AM

is that a huge rick roll animated gif?

SYRFox 07.28.2008 07:47 AM

Nope, it's really the track, and it's fucking beautiful, it has a splendid piano
