One of the five or six riffs in there is one of my favourite riffs. Satyricon - Mother North The intro riff in this is also one of my favourites. |

spruance is ridiculously skilled player/composer, 'disco volante' has some great riffs indeed. im surprised no one has mentioned anything by octis/ocrillim/orthrelm/crom-tech. mick has more ridiculous riff sequences in a span of five seconds than other lesser guitarists have in their discographies. fucking part II of annwn, theres so many riffs in so little time it all kind of melds together into a tight knit brilliant guitar composition. his style is pretty much the opposite of a lot of noted experimental guitar composers, ala branca and chatham. those dudes use relatively simple riffs, but through repetition, layering, volume, and feedback create these huuuuuuge hypnotic compositions. mick barr on the other hand plays a million riffs ridiculously fast and throws them together and makes a composition. now usually i hate that style of guitar playing, as you have to be a virtuoso to pull it off, but lets face it, mick barr is a fucking virtuoso. and the amazing thing is his style has the same effect as branca and chatham, hypnotic and mesmerizing, but his is through speed and the weaving of guitar lines instead of repetiion. also, bands that have great fucking guitar riffs that are a little wierd: dazzling killmen u.s. maple polvo yowie zeni geva sightings (i love their heavily distorted riffs, especially their earlier barely audible stuff) |
Trey Spruance is by far one of my favorite guitar players.. up there with Seiichi Yamamoto definitely. Trey is just brilliant.
Glad someone mentioned Koenjihyakkei. One of the best bands of all time! Here's a really obvious one no one's mentioned.. lots of Captain Beefheart songs have a shit ton of great riffs. "Sheriff of Hong Kong"! |
Early Sepultura LPs have got songs with 7/8 riffs in them .

songs by Diamond Head
|
blitzkrieg bop.
just kidding. |
Anything off the "Jane Doe" album by Converge. More riffs than you can shake a pimp-cane at, and all killer shit too.
