When I was 14 I would not buy the Butthole Surfer's Hairway To Steven because the cover photos all distorted freaked me out too much.

I don't believe anyone doesn't make decision based on cover-art. This can only be true if you have unlimited funds (no-one) or only buy records by artists you already like.

Simple test - there are three records in front of you, you only have enough money for one - which one do you choose? Cover art won't be the sole thing that sways your decision, but it'll definitely play a part.

Unfortunately, there's a load of records I can't bring myself to buy because of hideous cover art. I refuse to endorse any cover art involving an effect pedal.

What about SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF?

I think there isn't a person who is not affected by the cover-art of an album. However in the end of the day I go by the sound of the album, not by the cover. I've been mislead by covers very often, thank god I listen to the albums before I buy them.

I don't own that album, because I only like about three Mudhoney songs. I don't mind when someone puts them on, but I'd rather not myself.

Tricky question. It's ok for me to buy a record ignoring the bad artwork if the songs are good and I've heard at least two beforehand, something that it's ever so easy to do with the internet. Bad artwork irritates me deeply, though, 'cause it's an important component of what makes you a special artist compared to others. Maybe not as much as the music, but hey, if you are doing something, why not do it well and try to be better than everyone else?

Glice 11.19.2008 03:43 PM

Precisely. I don't think musicians should neglect visual art just because it isn't their thing. If you don't like it, or you just don't know, get someone else to do it. Just because there are some amazing sleeves that look like they were drawn by a child with a biro doesn't mean yours will look anything other than cheap. Ultimately, you want to sell your record, so make as much of it good as you can.

Who wouldn't buy an album cover that looked like that?

Re-read this post and hang your head, or join a convent or something. By God man, your grandparents fought in two or more wars so that people wouldn't have conversations about effects pedals. Have some respect.

sarramkrop 11.19.2008 03:51 PM

did you hear it?

atsonicpark 11.19.2008 03:52 PM

Too funny.

sarramkrop 11.19.2008 03:54 PM

the effect pedal sex position was conceived here. 2008
