EDIT: fuck it I looked it up anyways. It's the Suitcase 2 tapes.

The tracks "Your Charming Proposal" , "Home By Ten" , and "Paper Girl" are all sick songs. My three fav guided by voices songs actually.

My band got to play a GBV tribute show in cinci one time, and Pollard was there right next to the stage getting wasted in the booth. it was sweet. played 2 of those songs. I'd really recommend those songs above though, kind of rare songs.

That's awesome, dude. Did you talk to Bob? He's really cool with his fans. Always drunk, too. Most of their live shows is just him stumbling around singing.

Every GBV fan has to own their "Electrifying Conclusion" DVD. Their last show, 4 hours, I just wish it was longer...

(bump)

Every few Bob solo/sideproject albums that come out nowadays, I buy one in the hopes that "this is the one. This is the return to form."

SUPERMAN WAS A ROCKER came really close for me. Probably because the instrumentals were old GBV leftovers, but...

have you heard boston spaceships?

noisereductions 08.06.2009 08:24 AM

nope. I heard good things. But the album was never available on eMusic. And I'm really not excited enough by new Pollard albums to go out and look for them.

Toilet & Bowels 08.06.2009 08:35 AM

http://www.myspace.com/bostonspaceships, from his post-gbv stuff that i've heard it's the best, i think he needs a proper band to play with rather than just collaborating with his producer or random musicians.

noisereductions 08.06.2009 08:37 AM

I think he needs Tobin Sprout.

TheFoxBen 08.06.2009 08:39 AM

Brown Submarine is my favorite record from 2008 ! I love it.

generally yeah, but some of the gbv stuff without tobin sprout was still very good

noisereductions 08.06.2009 10:10 AM

yes. My favorites are pretty cliche'd:

Bee Thousand
Alien Lanes
Under The Bushes, Under The Stars

but I definitely went thru a several-year obsession with them back in the day. I had pretty much all the Fading Captain Series until I don't know #20 or so? There's tons and tons of great material in his discograpy if yr not afraid to get down and dirty and dig for the gems.

noisereductions 08.06.2009 10:13 AM

which reminds me, why don't we start using this thread to post OOP Guided by Voices sideprojects etc?

New Suitcase box set announced !

Like the two previous ones, it's going to be 4 CD's of 25 songs each ! According to the tracklist, there's going to be a version of "Huffman Prairie Flying Field", a 4-track version of "Smothered in Hugs" and maybe another version of "Alright" !

Pax Americana 08.06.2009 05:47 PM

Update: I now own both the Boston Spaceships albums, and they are both awesome. You'll dig em if you're into Pollard in any way. Catchy, and fun as all hell! Pollard just put out yet another solo record too. I think it's called Elelphant Jokes, or something like that. This guy is fucking impossible to keep up with, but I love him.

Yes ! What I like about the Suitcases is that some of the songs on those compilations later become Boston Spaceships songs, you can find lo-fi versions of "Dorothy's a Planet", "Headache Revolution", "Soggy Beavers", etc. on those ! :D

noisereductions 08.06.2009 07:36 PM

where's those OOP links already??

Jeremy 08.07.2009 12:44 AM

I was actually going to start a GBV album thread since our good friend Mark Prindle is reviewing their massive catalog, but most people here are already stating their favorites.

Mine is Under The Bushes, Under The Stars as well. The record is perfect. I LOVE the way it sounds, some of my favorite production ever. Definitely top ten, maybe even top five.

My favorite EP from them (Of which there are several) is Sunfish Holy Breakfast. I bought it new in a record store a while back for a couple bucks and its long out of print. It was a great early birthday present.
