Trasher02 01.03.2009 06:37 AM

I seriously can not get into Zappa and believe me I've tried.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 07:08 PM

Money and Weasels are both MINDBLOWINGLY AWESOME. The rest can fuck off.

Anyone have 200 Motels on DVD and want to burn it for me?

noisereductions 09.30.2009 09:07 PM

haha why the fuck did you resurrect this thread? That's awesome.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 09:12 PM

I was listening to the black page.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyWpe...eature=related

which is insanely good.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 09:13 PM

Oh, for the record, I love Absolutely Free and Freak Out and Lumpy Gravy and maybe a few others but those 2 I mentioned are just so AMAZING that the rest seems kinda... well, you know.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 09:14 PM

Also, I read recently that one of Merzbow's favorite musicians is Zappa. Found that really interesting.

Dead-Air 10.01.2009 02:06 AM

1. Lumpy Gravy
2. We're Only in it for the Money
3. Absolutely Free!
4. Hot Rats
5. Freak Out!

Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch still gets honorable mention though. Largely for acid tinged personal nostalgia, but what the fuck?

We're Only In It For The Money is the best. I love Freak Out!, Hot Rats, Weasles Ripped My Flesh and Sheik Yerbouti (am I the only one?) as well. Don't really know about the order though, except for Money.

SuperCreep 10.01.2009 04:16 PM

I liked Sheik Yerbouti when I first heard it, but its novelty wears off quickly. Either that or it's because I don't have the humor of a sixteen year old anymore.

Still, I really like Flakes and Yo Mama from that one (and not much else.)

Ship Arriving is one of my super-favorites. It's so slept on. That album is ridiculous.

well, if you've heard Zappa's 'Lumpy Gravy' this will make some sense. The way Zappa uses noises and cuts off beautiful orchestral music with electronic music is not very far removed from Merzbow's composing methods.

Jim O'Rourke once said nice things on 'Uncle Meat', which has some technical info printed on the sleeve on how to overdub as many layers as possible. This encouraged Jim to do similar things.

The Zappa album that did it for me was Hot Rats. It's totally different than most of Zappa's other output since it's missing his cynical lyrics and musical jokes. CD 3 of Lumpy Money with outtakes on the orchestral sessions for Lumpy Gravy is really nice too. Same for 'Imaginary Diseases'. I'm still loving 'Absolutely Free' and 'Burnt Weeny Sandwich' a lot too. And 'Waka Jawaka'. And 'Grand Wazoo'. And 'Roxy and Elsewhere'.

What about The Mothers live at Fillmore

The Mudshark is classic stuff, and Flo and Eddie joining in

DanielCarlson 10.03.2009 07:05 AM

Is that Zappa & Beefheart album any good? I mean, it's a combination that sure sounds like a shitload of awesomeness, but who knows?

simulated stereo 10.03.2009 07:11 AM

1. Uncle Meat
2. Freak Out!
3. Hot Rats
4. We're Only in it for the Money
5. Absolutely Free

pbradley 10.03.2009 07:21 AM

Hot Rats is pretty much the only album I heard and liked.

disserpointin', that one. I mean, I'd still give it a listen, but neither Zappa nor Beefheart put their A-game into that album, probably because they grew to hate the fuck out of each other at that point.
