GIMME DAT OLD TIIIIME RELIJUN

Everytime I become disillusioned with music, I listen to Beefheart non-stop. He really is brilliant, I don't know what else to say. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Shiny Beast and Doc at the Radar Station. Apparently he demo'd the majority of the songs for Trout Mask on piano. Would be interesting to hear if any tapes of that exist.

I think your first Beefheart album should definitely be Doc at the Radar Station. Because it rocks.

DeadDiscoDildo 04.20.2009 07:09 PM

I was just listening to that too.

I think doc and safe as milk are tied for my favs.

Okay, thanks guys. I'll have to look for some at my store on my next visit.

not necessarily, i have owned said album for about the same amount of time as you, it gets a listen about once a year and i'm really just not into it that much. i can definately appreciate it musically but not one that i rave about to people.

ilistened to it in full, uninterrupteed last night, twice in fact and yeah, its good, yeah i can see why there is love but still...... it deserves to be in my collection but yknow...its nowhere near my top 50 of all time...its good...no more no less...

hey! just twice? no wonder! try to check it song by song, then it will really grow - i guarantee it! :)

"Matt Groening has written that his first reaction to Trout Mask Replica was that it was "the worst thing [he]'d ever heard", but now lists the album as one of his favorites." - from wiki.

I like everything else I've ever heard by the Beefman but this is just ridiculous. Does ANYBODY find anything redeeming about this album?

Yo, cracker, what the fuck. You are insulting everything my people died for. Or something like that.

I love Trout Mask Replica, but it falls somewhere in the middle as far as Beefheart goes. Safe as Milk and Mirror Man Sessions probably get the most rotation while I almost never listen to The Spotlight Kid.

atsonicpark 05.04.2009 10:35 PM

personal favorite:

1. ice cream for crow
2. lick my decals off baby
3. doc at the radar station
4. strictly personal
5. trout mask replica
6. shiny beast
7. safe as milk
8. mirror man
9. spotlight kid
10. clear spot

and then the rest...

Kuwa_Slayne 05.04.2009 10:42 PM

Damn, I obviously need more Beefheart.

SuperCreep 05.04.2009 10:47 PM

I think it's starting to look like this for me now:

1. Trout Mask Replica
2. Safe as Milk
3. Lick My Decals Off, Baby
4. Ice Cream for Crow
5. Doc at the Radar Station
6. Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
7. Mirror Man
8. Clear Spot
9. Strictly Personal
10. The Spotlight Kid

Such an awesome catalogue. Shame about the two "sell-out" albums.
