I'm going to go with J on both accounts. J is a far better guitar player in my mind, no question. Vocal-wise, if we were counting the Pixies and Frank's early solo work, I'd go with Frank, but his voice has SUCKED for the past decade or so. I've always liked J's "slacker" Neil Young-ish vocals, and to his credit, he's never lost it.

Also, aside from a handful of songs on his first two, Frank Black's solo stuff is really boring.

I think Jay is a better gtr player technically by far (solos!) but Frank Black kicks his sorry butt in the songwriting dept!

Frank Black wrote some really good weird songs with the Pixies. But his shit material far outweighs his good material. And J Mascis... I don't see the big deal in him other than he plays with power.
