'there's more than merzbow in japnoise, you know, but not much more'
:P |
I've not listened to that much but haven't really liked what I've heard. I do find it really interesting though and I'm convinced that there's more to it than I've sampled (some Guitar Wolf (which I just thought was pointless) Boredoms (I liked Vision Creation Newsun when i first heard it but got bored with it almost immediately afterwards) and a few snippets of other artists off of Youtube). I'll be reading this thread with interest though, hoping to be introduced to other stuff.

You may be the Earl of Slander, but you are also the Duke of Knowing Great Japanese Noise Musicians.... ok, that was stupid, but you are right, Haino must be mentioned... |
eX-Girl!

half the bands named in this thead arent remotely noise.
with that said, my five japanese real noise artists are incapacitants, solmania, controlled bleeding, hijokaidan, and violent onsen geisha. |
its pretty easy to tell when people have read about noise on wikipedia once and decided they love and know the genre.
japanese music in general is just great, their genres tend to be really fucked up, noisy, and sometimes artsier versions of thier western counterparts. when the us was still freaking to hendrix and all that great heavy psych, japan had already birthed les rallizes denudes, a band that blurred the line between avant composition techniques and scorching western psychedelic rock. japanese hardcore was basically noise but played in standard punk rock lineups; confuse, g.i.s.m., z, gai, etc... even thier free jazz, with stuff like kaoru abe, took the noisyness of ayler and just freaked it out of space. |
One of those guys has a bullet belt for a necklace! If I wore one of them, I'd get arrested!

Ahem, this might come as a surprise to the most-certainly-not-japanese Paul Lemos... |
Where did you read that Melly, a record sleeve or something?

It really is almost impressive the amount of utter shite you spout. |
oh?

Well, LRD are doo-wop basslines with excessive solos. Not much avant-composition about that, unless you know precisely fuck all about 'avant-composition'.
|
well yeah sure i agree with you, but i mean they had serious ties with avant garde theater groups, so certainly not avant-compositions but they definitely had rooting thier. ive always thought thats what made them special, thier wierd and artsy psych band that still fucking rocks like few bands ive ever heard.
|
you gave the example of hendrix as if he were the only one around in the late 60s. im pretty sure that the US had a pretty impressive avant garde scene at the time
|
though not strictly 'noise', i love the stuff like AMT and aural fit which has come from the noisy velvets/blue cheer/can/hawkwind route but just makes it even more deranged.
les rallizes denudes are ace and the dude rocks a pair of shade like no motherfucker that side of the pacific. personal fave are tsurubami, one of the innumerable kawabata makoto sideprojects. i'd tell you how the guitar washes over and destroys you like a tsunami, how the bass is an anchor caught in the tsunami's inexorable pull and how the drums splash and accentuate the music like the deft flecks of an abstract impressionists brush but, you know, i'd get called a cunt so i should probably just leave it. |

Masonna's split with Violent Onsen Geisha. Both sides are God, and it's easy to find online. Check it out.
