will try to do.

my top 10 wonky albums would probably look like that:

1000Names - Illuminated Man
Dorian Concept - When Planets Explode
FaltyDL - Love Is A Liability
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Hudson Mohawke - Butter
Ikonika - Contact, Love, Want, Have
Nosaj Thing - Drift
V/A - 5 Years Of Hyperdub
V/A - Museum Of Future Sound vol. 1
V/A - Museum Of Future Sound vol. 2

Technically not all of it is wonky (FaltyDL is probably closer to dubstep for instance, and those Museum Of Future Sounds comps are skweee), but they're close enough to wonky to be relevant in here in my opinion. Fuck purists. Many other records would have a place in here as well (Architeq's Gold + Green, Lorn's Nothing Else, Starkey's Ephemeral Exhibits, etc etc etc).

As for my top 10 tracks I guess it'd look like this:

1000Names - Remixing In The Block (With Dena)
Dorian Concept - Color Sexist
Eprom - Hendt
Floating Points - Esthian III
Hudson Mohawke - OOOPS!
Mesak - Popkumm
Nosaj Thing - 1665/Bach
Rustie - Bad Science
Starkey - Gutter Music
Zomby - Spliff Dub (Rustie Remix)

(once again, Mesak is skweee. But hey. Also, 1000Names would deserve another mention for Whiz Bang Scienze. These guys are most excellent.)

SYRFox 06.27.2010 03:47 AM

Also I guess my mix would be more relevant in here, so I'm going to post it again for anyone that's interested in getting into wonky.

http://www.mediafire.com/?0z23nmayjqo

It includes most of the tracks / artists you really need to know. It's not 100% exclusively wonky, some things are rather glitch hop, dubstep, or even hip hop (Percee P...), but I feel like they feel good in the flow of the mix.

I was looking forward to Mono/Poly's album after The George Machine EP and especially that track on Mary Anne Hobbs' compilation last year, and he did not fail to deliver. A bit long (66 minutes), but well worth it. This guy simply makes some of the craziest beats in terms of rhythm and stuff (you don't hear 5/4 in tracks that much, and that is true for most genres of modern music). Impressive. Black Box Matrix Death (which was on the Mary Anne Hobbs comp under another name) is even better in this version. I'm hooked.

Check this out:

Mono/Poly - Black Box Matrix Death
Mono/Poly - Antibodies
Mono/Poly - Analysis (DNA) / Fire Passion

bass hit bass hit SNARE DRUM. bass hit bass hithihathit SNARE DRUM.

LOUD SNARE DRUM.

great genre.

SYRFox 07.06.2010 06:29 PM

Definitely. Addictive too.
I don't think I've heard a single "bad" wonky record.

atsonicpark 07.07.2010 06:46 AM

This mono/poly song I have called BEATLES BITCH is fucking amazing!

SYRFox 07.07.2010 06:53 AM

Fuck yes! I love that track, by far the best on that EP. His new album is even better though, if you ask me. It sounds like if he went to a whole new level, whether it be in terms of production, rhythms, structure, melodies, etc. Everything, basically. I just wish it wasn't just released as an USB card... would've loved to own this on CD

SYRFox 07.26.2010 08:18 AM

Just discovered Domain ID's Boombox Apocalypse. Great EP! Deserves a lot more than the 31 listeners and 378 plays he's got on last.fm.

Just listen to how he slays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR0AKtUJhvk

Glice 07.26.2010 08:28 AM

Do you know Phaeleh? I've never really got into him, but someone told me that I can see his house from my window. Which is a bit odd, I didn't realise that any of the Dubstep lot operated on my side of the river.

I really like it a lot, the musical segments are just amazing, probably could've done without some of the propoganda samples, but they're easy to overlook when the music's so good.

I've heard about him but never checked him out. Will do, ahah.

Exactly! Tracks such as Antibodies, Analysis or Black Box Matrix Death are just too goo to be true. Though I think it sucks that it's only released as an USB Card...

SYRFox 08.03.2010 06:14 PM

Interesting and (really) exhaustive article about wonky: http://rougesfoam.blogspot.com/2009/...ing-wonky.html

atsonicpark 08.03.2010 06:23 PM

thanks, interesting

SYRFox 08.05.2010 11:12 AM

"Bare Blips EP" by Redinho is fucking great. Lightning Strikes, Bare Blips and especially BANGER totally slay.

atsonicpark 08.06.2010 06:21 AM

fox, do you know the song sabacco by quarta 330? I'm sure you do. It's one of my favorite tunes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLJYMAlQjAE

also, that "wonky mix.mp3" thing you made is absolutley incredible, everyone needs to get that if they haven't yet...

Definitely starting to get addicted to this stuff. I love how off-time and rigid so much of it is, yet it's musical. All the little insane micro complexities do my head in.

SYRFox 08.06.2010 07:51 AM

That track is great indeed. I wish I knew more Quarta330, his version of Skeng is fucking mad.

Thanks once more about the mix... Glad you like it. How do you find the new one by the way? I'm probably goign to do another one next week...

You should seriously check out that track "Banger" by Redinho. I just can't get it out of my head, getting spastic on that stuff. Super epileptic laser wonky. The version up on youtube was probably extracted out of a mix so it's pitched down, the original version is even better so you should get this one...

SYRFox 08.06.2010 07:52 AM

Also, another wicked wonky tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffaCiiXCakI
Just wait till the 4 on the floor beat stops and the glitchyness kicks in (around 1:00 or so). Your brain will melt.
