Is there an SY cover band?

i can believe that, an interracial band would be a far less likely to be lucrative in america. |
Just look at Boyz II Men.

i should have been more specific, a mixed race band where white people are in the minority won't be as lucrative in the USA as it presents a version of intregration that a typical american would find terrifying, i.e. whites as a minority working as equals with dark skinned people.

Prussian Blue got shot of their black drummer pretty quick I notice.

^^^ I deleted my "Just look at TV on the Radio" post because I'm not sure they qualify as R&B.

There's always going to be an exception to every rule. I saw a black fellow in a swimming pool recently and he seemed to be doing a pretty good impression of someone swimming. I also know a jewish chap with no overt anxiety towards his mother. The rule still stands though.

what was this thread originally about again?

Yes, but TV on The Radio have the angle of being black and playing indie rock, which is to say, that while racism is largely deemed extremely unfashionable in the indie rock community, this trend is not reflected in the record collection or listening habits of an indie rock listener who will most likely have less than 3 records made by black people in their collection, so to quell their anxiety as to whether they are really a racist in denial, the indie rocker buys a record made by TV on The Radio that a) allows them to imagine themselves as appreciating cultural & ethnic diversity but b) doesn't really stray too far into the scary territory of the non-white. Thus TV on The Radio corner their particular market.

I 100% agree

The only problem is that question of what black music 'is'. I tend to think that hip-hop is a global enterprise; jazz has been about a white audience (and, increasingly, white players) for 50+ years. Reggae is good because it's from the West Indies, not because it's played by black people (with a few exceptions - UB40's first LP anyone?). Indie like TVOTR is poor because it's poor; white people aren't alone in their ability to make poor music, as TVOTR prove. I have some mbrira records - are they black or just good? SYG, PLEASE DECIDE THE ETHNICITY OF MY RECORD COLLECTION.
