How about using one of those little craft drills - try using the different attachments (like those smoothing things made from stone) and see what happens. I think that's what I'd try first, but I haven't a clue if it would work.

i have seen a few people do this live and its always really god. one guy at a reccent gig did all kinds of stuff with turntables like playing cybals with them etc.

throw pebbles at it.
scratch the cd vertically.
toothpaste with crystals.
heat.

yes, it is really a nice listen. in fact, quite a funny listen too.
