dont think anyone deserves racist jokes. if someones throwing homophobic abuse its because they are uneducated twatbags who need to learn a thing or two. also they might be gay.

er ah I thought arguing on the internetting was pointless. It's a cultural thing that when black men get together they often get all buggy about homosexuals if the subject comes up, like say if something "gay" comes on television...it's a macho thing, I suppose. No amount of words or good intentions will alter that stereotype that is generally true. In prison though, I suspect many would be among the first ones to "fuck anything that moves." This post is gonna take the heat off of both of you hehee. I do have several black friends that I get along with great and they often come by to hang out & listen to crunk while watching a football game or boxing match. In fact, I think I have more good black friends than white (and the white ones are either Jewish or Italian). But they still exhibit close-mindness about this subject and these are mostly older people (one friend is only 28) with a good head on their shoulders. Needless to say, we won't be screening the recent Andy Warhol documentary or the like together any time soon.

More related to the topic is the subject of jokes. Jokes are just that...jokes. So, an off-color joke is not necessarily something to get all worked up about really. Humor is a time-worn way we approach an understanding of our little differences. It gives us a forum in which to discuss matters albeit indirectly. We're all hard-wired genetically as well as environmentally conditioned to have some racist tendencies and Fear of the Other. It's one of the ways in which we are but imperfect humans, and it takes a raising of consciousness to truly get beyond being controlled by these very real issues.

I think I would be traumatized for life. It took some real guts to share that, Glice.
A comedian on Letterman did this real funny bit the other night. He was talking about how sometimes you let a glass door swing into the person behind you. If that person is white, you just mumble an apology or carry on like it didn't happen. If that person is black (& you are white) then you instantly go into a litany of apologies that approach a silly begging of their forgiveness. This is so true. I'm not like that anymore, but I can remember when I was. Much of the humor in The Office is centered around cultural and racial differences. It's intelligently done though and absolutely hysterical. |
