Thanks for all the suggestions. Some i know already and some i have never heard of and i've taken note.

lucyrulesok 11.24.2006 10:59 AM

And I don't know if it counts as classical but you should listen to the Akira soundtrack 'Symphonic Suite Akira' my itunes is telling me it's by 山城祥二... but I don't know what that means.

Most of the classical stuff I like is 20th century (Ligeti, Stockhausen, Part, etc), but I thought porky meant further back in time than that. Even Stravinsky is pretty recent.

Nice to see Saint-Saens get a mention. I got a piano quartet recently. It's pretty mighty. I listened to some Shnitke this morning. I think he's my favourite composer for violin (Bach's partitas aside, of course).

I quite like Stockhausen's helicopter quartet, but it's far and away from his best work.

That's just someone's overly-complex version of the spelling of who we American yokels like to call "Sho-STACK-of-itch."

Glice 11.24.2006 11:55 AM

Ah. I've never seen it spelt that way. Even on the Russian edition of his 3rd (I think). Shostokovich's 13th, that's where your money's at.

i did music for my junior cert in school and learned about all these famous composers and stuff and i have to tell you i forget everything i ever learned about them, it was a pile of shite, but we did do a lot of other stuff as in learing to identify notes and stuff like that which i found most valuable in later life.

gyorgy ligetti --- what about 100 metronomes -- speak about conceptual and boring

Schubert's Leiders (about 1000 of them) are pop masterpieces.
Everyone likes his Death and the Maiden String Quartet.

You MUST check out Schoenberg. Start w/ String Quartets and Trios or Transfigured Night.

Heres a few of my favorites:

Shostakovich - 'Leningrad Symphony'
Bartok - 'Concerto For Orchestra'
Dvorak - 'From The New World'
Schoenberg - 'Pierrot Lunaire'
Gregg - 'Morning'

also check out some stuff by Webern, Stockhausen, Copland and Debussy
