Hmm. Don't believe the hype.

I don't think I do "top" anythings, really... I have about 12 of the records on Wire's list.. I like them all. Top 20? Top 50? pssh. what is this, the Olympics? Blah.

(EDIT: Oop.. i have 14 of the records on there. Didn't see Alexander Tucker and Charalambides..)

Iain 12.19.2006 10:16 PM

What a boring list. Every top whatever for 2006 has been lame so far which tells me that it hasn't been that great a year for music. Recorded music anyway. Live music has been great this year...

Where's the new Pere Ubu record in that list. I thought the Wire loved Ubu. And that Charalambides record was shit, what's that all about?

Carla's seriously rad too. She's been super supportive of my group even though we're nobody. She can play so many styles too, it's frigging amazing.

Dead-Air 12.19.2006 11:10 PM

The list isn't bad, but they've ignored quite a few great out records too. Of course it's just a composite of their critics faves. Sure seems weird that Celtic Frost made the list. Since when did Wire writers like old school death metal??

Quoted for truth

val-holla-ing 12.20.2006 01:20 AM

also, the leafcutter john album should've been on there.

i have 10 of those albums.

candymoan 12.20.2006 05:21 AM

it would be rather unfair to call celtic frost old school death metal..
celtic frost is not a generic band, and their music is very diverse..

i'd say, good call..

porkmarras 12.20.2006 05:23 AM

Don't they also do a series of lists about records reviewed in specific sections of the magazine? That list is only part of the whole feature.

sonicl 12.20.2006 05:39 AM

Yes, you're right. The list is a little meaningless outside of the context of the whole The Wire review of the year.

I tend to use these end of year lists as a way of seeing if there's stuff I've missed that I might have been interested in. I'm not going to go out and buy a whole "Top 10" just on the basis of what a journalist or record store owner says.

Right you are, my feeling on the matter entirely.

I think that out of all these lists(that are mainly a bore for the most part) The Wire's remains the most interesting because there isn't any ranking as such and they try to edit everything to something that is as short as possible, considering the huge amounts of music that they come into contact with. Not bad at all.

sonicl 12.20.2006 06:05 AM

I was surprised (although I suppose I shouldn't have been) at how unadventurous the Rough Trade list is. I'll be interested to see what Volcanic Tongue and Downtown Music Gallery come up with though.

davenotdead 12.20.2006 07:17 AM

i like the fact that justin timberlake and TI aren't on there....but where o where are the Liars!?! I don't care what you think of them (I didn't like them at all until this year), Drums Not Dead is the best album of the year, it kicks so much ass its not funny...and thom yorke is with me on this....

they are ranked, if you look at the magazine they probably wrote a bit of blurb about the top 10 records, which leads me to suggest they are ranked in some fashion, they just aren't numbered

porkmarras 12.20.2006 07:39 AM

Sorry but that doesn't make sense. They aren't ranked, should we give them a call and ask them?Wait,i'll do it.

porkmarras 12.20.2006 07:48 AM

hahaha.I lose.I've just called them and they told me that the main list IS ranked and it's based on the amount of votes that a record gets while the other lists are in alpahabetical order.

*slaps himself*

Toilet & Bowels 12.20.2006 09:12 AM

what i said makes sense!
