I am really excited for this album. I hope it will rock.

amerikangod 03.03.2009 11:46 PM

On first listen it was kind of a boner-killer. I guess because it's not how I'd hoped it'd sound in my head. I wanted it to be more raw and noisey and less upbeat and smooth. But upon further listens, I'm getting excited again. I'm glad I listened to it. That way I don't show up on prom night with wild expectations only to have her cry when I pull out and cum on her thigh after two minutes of arhythmic pumping. Maybe now we might actually have some good sex, 'The Eternal'?

I can say that I'm not a big fan of some of Thurston's vocal stylings as they do have a bit of a 'Sonic Nurse' vibe to them (and I did not care for the overall vibe of that album.) I can say that I AM a fan of the fact that it sounds like there will be a nice pacing to the album. I noticed some 'A Thousand Leaves' melodies in there too, although at a somewhat increased tempo. Some more 'Sonic Nurse' type melodies as well. But very little 'Rather Ripped.'

'Sacred Trickster' is a Kim song (which surprised me) and sounds promising. I kind of like the whoa-oh-ing in 'No Way,' is it? 1:18 to 1:21 is a total Wipers riff. Like, the opening of 'When it's Over' off of 'Youth of America.' 'Anti-Orgasm' sounds like it might be one of my favorites.

Oh, and they totally didn't look to black metal for the lyrics. "Mission Control to brain police" and "I don't want to know who has the highest score" don't quite make me feel like I'm looking through falling snow towards the Welkin... or make me want to use any adjectives connoting the cold.

samuel 03.03.2009 11:53 PM

^ The riff from 1:18-1:21 is totally from Reena too. I'm pretty sure it's a clip from No Way.

GeneticKiss 03.04.2009 12:20 AM

I don't know about you guys, but when I heard the montage my anticipation for The Eternal shot into the stratosphere! Maybe I'm just jaded from the fact that it's new music from my favorite band (or it's because I'm one of the few on here who likes RR, EJSTNS, and Goo), but I just don't understand the lukewarmness of the response to the posting of this music.

Sorta off topic: Anyone else think "Sacred Trickster" is possibly the best song title SY have come up with in years?

im completely psyched, dude. Sacred Trickster is definitely a lot better than some of recent SY titles. the song sample sounds awesome too.

it rocks more in a Sonic Nurse way than a Rather Ripped way

The album can be preordered from a trusted local retailer STARTING ON MARCH 24 or directly from Matador starting April 28.

repeater 03.04.2009 02:06 AM

I´m a bit confused. Does this only work for in US...?

Moshe 03.04.2009 02:10 AM

I'll try to find out more details.

repeater 03.04.2009 03:11 AM

cool, thanks!

MARCH 24!!?!!???!!?!?!? AHHH SO SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Malcolm81 03.04.2009 05:36 AM

It's hard to tell from this short preview. It doesn't sound as I expected or hoped for, and it's probably better that way. I really like what I'm hearing: the vocals, the upbeat mood, the energy. I'm even more excited about this album now!

Is it just me, or does the first bit sung by Kim in the preview sound a lot like "Mariah Carey"? Not that I'd mind, I actually like that!

SYRFox 03.04.2009 06:42 AM

I really enjoy that preview. Totally excited for the album now

some clarifications from the nice dudes of matador:

just to preface, the split dates (3/24 and 4/28) are an effort to let the small indie retailers in the US start to pre-order SY BEGN before the offer goes up online. hopefully, this makes folks go to physical stores to make sure they get the LP which is in limited supplies.

1. is this offer only for u.s. costumers?
what we say to this is that US-based online shops like Insound, Other Music and the MataStore ship to many foreign countries.
there will be a special UK offer... announced shortly.

2. what should non u.s. fans (like me) do if they want the lp?
see above.

3. do you get to stream the album if you pre order on march 24?
the stream goes live on April 28.

4. if the uk offer is different, can u.s. fans order it?
same as above. if you have the will, there is always a WAY with the Internet.

5. are "mp3's to follow" will be mp3's of the live LP?
at this point, we are keeping the live show to the LP.

6. is it possible to use paypal on the buy early site?
the MataStore accepts paypal. the sale goes up on April 28.

You made my day, thank you :)

repeater 03.04.2009 08:34 AM

thanks for the info Moshe.

I ´d better start saving some money, cause I know I´ll be BEGN both the US and Uk versions (if they are diffrent that is)

they are nice. and they answered all the questions posted here.

auto-aim 03.04.2009 08:56 AM

They'll Answer To My Fist!

greenlight 03.04.2009 10:51 AM

I think Thurston's voice on this album is again bit mellow.

mil_pl 03.04.2009 11:10 AM

I want T's rap. :(

fluxequalsrad 03.04.2009 11:32 AM

No one is noting that this is a lot heavier then anything they've done in a while. Definitely riff-heavy as Thurston hinted.

As for Washing Machine repeat? Steve hates that album... it'll never happen.

nicfit 03.04.2009 11:44 AM

Sounds like a dirty twisted album.

true...

noisereductions 03.04.2009 12:23 PM

Steve will do what he's told!

(kidding)

he hated his drums on EJS too, huh?

barnaclelapse 03.04.2009 12:42 PM

Well, I'm psyched.

uhler 03.04.2009 12:54 PM

i'm hoping this doesn't sound like a cross between "rather ripped" and "dirty".

nancykitten 03.04.2009 01:56 PM

I'm kind of disappointed by the samples. It sounds a bit formulaic; I wanted something new this time -- even if it was regressive (eg. back to the no wave-esque crashing).

I'm sure I'll love the record to death anyway.

True that.

Some of the clips sounded better than others did, but we'll wait and see. I wanna hear more before I make any assumptions

haahhaha, I don't know how he could hate washing machine given how great his drumming is on that one. The high-hat trickery is gold.

Chris Lawrence 03.04.2009 04:36 PM

i agree re: hi-hat trickery! what exactly did steve say about 'washing machine'? does he not like the album itself or just the whole lollapalooza/1995 whirlwind in general? (is this in goodbye 20th century which i have yet to read?)

It is... I cant remember exactly what he said. But it was along the lines that he thought it was a shitty album for them. Or that he was just disappointed with the outcome.

And elsewhere he said he was putoff at the spee the recorded EJS because he didnt get to really perfect his drum parts. The finished product is like demo takes of his drum parts.

Chris Lawrence 03.04.2009 04:42 PM

The whole album sounds like a demo! I thought that was its charm...

Florya 03.04.2009 04:51 PM

From what I've heard I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

No point in trying to compare it to other albums - it has a life of its own.

al shabbray 03.04.2009 06:10 PM

niiiicfiiit!
will you stil do that?

musefreek 03.04.2009 06:31 PM

fuck me, it sounds amazing!! getting excited now.

jennthebenn 03.04.2009 06:35 PM

Steve Shelley on Washing Machine: "It's the worst piece of shit we've
ever done. I'm exaggerating...but it doesn't hold up for me."

Chris, what the hell, read that book NOW.

sarramkrop 03.04.2009 06:44 PM

What the fuck does he know? He's only the drummer!

He kept Murray Street from being named Street Sauce! He's a gawd among
men, that one.

Chris Lawrence 03.04.2009 09:17 PM

where was he when they named RATHER RIPPED?
