Which venue do you want me to put on the list?
I would pick, but that is a tough decision here 'cuz you've listed some interesting venues.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 04.17.2006 04:21 PM

in Los Angeles

I like the Roxy, the Troubadour, The Spaceland, the Knitting Factory

Hehe, I'll leave it to your discretion. But, in all honesty, SY are never going to play Koko or the Spitz...too small, too jazzy in the case of the Spitz. They're probably not going to play the Barbican (aha! I remembered!) or the Royal Festival hall... they're most likely to play Brixton academy or possibly Islington academy.

marleypumpkin 04.17.2006 04:29 PM

I'll put The Troubadour SFAD, 'cuz that's the venue I'm most familiar w/.

Sonic Youth

The Ripped Up Sound Tour:

The Greek Theater, CA
The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA
Aragon, Chicago, IL
The Murate Theater, Indianapolis, IN
Beachland Ballroom, Cleveland, OH
The Warsaw, Brooklyn, NY
9:30, Washington DC
Nanci Raygun's, Richmond, VA
40 Watt, Athens, GA
Brixton Academy, London
Glasgow Barrowlands, London
Ausland, Berlin
Paradiso, Amsterdam
Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff

Glice 04.17.2006 04:31 PM

Oh shit, Ifor Bach... that would be great. Again, would never happen, but that would be most excellent.

marleypumpkin 04.17.2006 04:36 PM

Well, I'll leave that one up there for the pure sentiment of it never going to happen.
This is probably the best of the threads I have made so far. I'm having fun w/ it. Aren't you?

Katy 04.17.2006 06:00 PM

The last time I saw Sonic Youth in London they played the Shepherds Bush Empire. A venue that I don't like and wouldn't want to see them at again. (The sound is alright, but I have NEVER had a good view of anything at that place. And the toilets are evil.)

Yeah the Recher is nice and is soooo easy to get to. I saw SY there in 2002. They opened with Candle and went right into Kissability. They started the encore by playing Calling All Girls!!!......one of my favorite SY shows:D

Iain 04.17.2006 06:10 PM

Brixton Academy mid-size?? It's fucking massive...

I also liked the Scala on the one occaision that I visited....

Clwb Ifor Bach is waaaayyy too small for Sonic Youth though...especially the downstairs bit which is the best bit because there isn't any stage.

It's a big old theatre. Theatres = mid-size. Arenas = fucking massive.

The London Arena, Earl's Court, Wembley are fucking massive (and awful). Brixton is, what, 4,000-5,000 capacity? Totally mid.

HaydenAsche 04.17.2006 06:22 PM

Red Sea
First Avenue
the Warehouse
Java Joint
Nick and Jordan's house on Second Street
Sarah Burns' Barn on Eagle Lake

Iain 04.17.2006 06:23 PM

OK, good point. Compared to an arena it is mid size. But it's massive for the sort of places that I would go to. I don't think I'd even bother going to see Sonic Youth if they played an arena. It would be the most hellish thing ever.

Glice 04.17.2006 06:26 PM

Any venue that holds more than 1,000 is unbearably large for me, unless it's a classical venue. Ideally, venues would all be 50-100 capacity, although some of the best gigs I've seen have been in the company of less than 20 people.

silverfreepress (sdasher) 04.17.2006 06:26 PM

The Fox Theatre in Atlanta

Town Hall in NYC

Higher Ground (the new one) Burlington Vt

Wiltern Theatre Los Angeles

those are all great 2000-5000 seat venues

anyone been to these?

Bklyn and Nyc have all these great nook and cranny places too, all the above are big time, ornate and jazzy. Hell even the Roxy in Atlanta is nice. The GA Theatre in Athens, great. Flynn in VT.

The 40 Watt in Athens is historic as is the Kniiting Factory in nyc, Tonic is good when its seated other wise it can get messy.

Irving Plaza has one of the worst balconies in rock......

Yeah. Arena shows are about as worthwhile as shows in aircraft hangars. (That is.. not.) There are a few "bigger" bands that I like that I actively wish bad sales figures upon just so the only opportunity I get to see them won't be at somewhere like the fucking London Arena...

REM, for example. Loved them since I was little, but I'm SO GLAD they don't sell well anymore. 1995- Milton Keynes Bowl, 1998- Earl's Court, 2003-Brixton Academy, 2005-Hammersmith Apollo.. they're gradually climbing back down the ladder. Give them a few years they'll be back at the 12 Bar Club where they belong. ;)

nature scene 04.17.2006 06:41 PM

the Fox would be really cool.

I saw SY on the nurse tour at Earthlink Live... strange venue

The Fox Theatre makes most places look "ghetto". That place was built pre depression and has clouds that move across the ceiling. Ever been in the elevator?

I like the Roxy for personal reasons and that it has great sound.

I really like Mississippi Nights in St. Louis. I've only been there a handful of times, but I like the way the place is set up, and one of my most enjoyable concert experiences (that being The Knitters/7 Shot Screamers show) was there.

marleypumpkin 04.17.2006 10:17 PM

Luxinterior, your venue has been added to the list

You mean the Java Joint in St. Cloud? We're playing there May 5th. First out of town gig!

My favorite venue is First Avenue/7th Street Entry
I had the honor of playing 7th Street Entry recently.

marleypumpkin 04.17.2006 10:57 PM

I updated the list. I took away the Red Sea, & replaced it w/ First Avenue.

Both of these on this tour would really make my day. As long as there is one of these I'll be happy!

marleypumpkin 04.18.2006 01:43 AM

Krastian:

Well, since they're different states, I don't see why I should take either down.
& you never know which/ or if shows are gonna be chosen by SY.
Hopefully chabib will see the hard work we've all put into this & ask them to consider these venues on their next tour.
(not trying to get shows added)

krastian 04.18.2006 01:57 AM

I was just doing some wishful thinking....not saying to take them off the list you are making. The two venues are pretty close to each other. Baltimore is like a 40 minute drive south down to DC.

marleypumpkin 04.18.2006 02:02 AM

Hmm, I might have to re-consider. That is a bit too close. Oh well. For now, it stays.

Glasgow Barrowlands is in, surprisingly enough, Glasgow. I realise that you may not know British geography, but Scotland is a hell of a long way away from London.

marleypumpkin 04.18.2006 08:21 AM

Hell man, you should of told me in your post wher it was. I was doing guess work. I'm not a geography major in anyway. Oh well, I'll go fix it now. Thanks for filling me in on the location. (I'm a dumbass)

marleypumpkin 04.18.2006 08:26 AM

WHOROHSCOPE: The list has been updated. I added your venue.

noumenal 04.18.2006 08:27 AM

It's only about 400 miles - like driving from Knoxville to Savannah

marleypumpkin 04.18.2006 08:29 AM

noumenal: Are you talking about London to Glasgow, or what? I'm confused.

noumenal 04.18.2006 08:30 AM

yeah, London to Glasgow

A Thousand Threads 04.18.2006 08:37 AM

here in Linz it´s pretty hard to find cool venues
well,
KAPU, STWST, Schl8hof Wels

Iain 04.18.2006 08:45 AM

Re: London to Glasgow.

It might be only 400 miles but what with public transport the way it is in the UK it will take you an age to get there and it'll quite likely be a bloody hellish journey to boot.

If we're looking at where we'd like to see SY play on the tour to support Rather Ripped, then for the London show I'd prefer to see them at the Royal Albert Hall or Somerset House than Brixton Academy. I've nothing against Brixton Academy, I just reckon that the Royal Albert Hall or Somerset House would be cool places to see them.

noumenal 04.18.2006 09:05 AM

Within a four houe drive of where I live would be nice.

Ew. RAH has horrible acoustics. Horrible, antiquated, Victorian bollocks. Barbican or RFH all the way. Although if Jimmer was still in the band it would be excellent to hear him make use of the RAH's fuck-off huge organ.

I've seen two concerts - Johnny Cash and Nick Cave - at RAH, and the sound was fine. I was on the floor level for both though, I don't know what the place is like up in the gods.

But yeah, Barbican and RFH would both be cool (although it would have to be QEH at the moment, not RFH).

Oo-er, missus!

Glice 04.18.2006 10:22 AM

Yeah... up in the Gods it's crap sound. On the floor it's fine for Rock concerts, but still shite compared to other London venues for classical stuff.
