Tacoma, thus being next to the Sonics on the list. The Jamaican group, to my knowledge, was pretty much a '70s phenomena. |

Speaking of Tangerine Dream, the German band by that name did a great album in 1969 called Electronic Meditation. Despite the title and their later descent into near new age synthiness, this is an album full, believe it or not, of distorted noisy guitar electronics. Plus some cool psychy synths too, but that's more to be expected. |
Indeed, Electronic Meditation is utterly, utterly ace. I don't know if later Tangerine Dream decended into "near new age synthiness" as much as became the definition of crap new age synthiness.
|
Damn right, Electonic Meditation is unbelievable good, one of my recent favourites. I canīt get into their later stuff, though
back to topic : The Sonics Bruce Haack Serge Gainsbourg (& Jane Birkin) Can (for Monster Movie & Delay 1968) Embryo (i think they released some stuff in the sixtees) .. . . . . |
and nobody mention Cromagnon yet,
their s/t is one of the best records my ears have heard. ![]() |
Yes, great and really odd record. Ghost covered Caledonia on their latest record. I haven't heard it yet, should be interesting.
|
Dead Air's first list was quite thorough and I was going to just mention a few more:
Blue Flame The Free Design |
The Godz
Pearls Before Swine AMM John Fahey The Monks Amon Duul Cromagnon Robbie Basho La Monte Young Spontaneous Music Ensemble Os Mutantes Limbus 3 White Noise |

Anyone got links to White Noise MP3s online? I'm quite anxious to actually hear them as they sound like the perfect group for my tastes from all I've read, but searching for the name "White Noise" brings up pages and pages of stuff that's not them. |

A couple of links, but no mp3's as of yet. A while back, I found a blog with downloads, but can't remember where... http://www.whitenoise.org.uk/ http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Feb0...vidvorhaus.asp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Noise_(band) |

love that album.
scary as fuck. here's a great thread from the atease messageboard (although probably only the last three pages or so of record links are still unexpired) sunshine, bubblegum, baroque & psychedelia, 60's/70's pop, obscure and familiar |
not mentioned yet: the silver apples
(also caetano veloso, gilberto gil, gal costa... i think os mutantes were the only tropicalia artists mentioned so far... or are they all usual suspects?) |
Amongst the many i can't list now i'd like to mention The United States Of America.
![]() |
USA were fantastic. Their subsequent incarnation as Joseph Byrd and the Field Hippies wasn't too shabby either.
West Coast 60s psychedelia isn't my favorite stuff of this era, but USA were amazing. Another criminally underrated group in that scene is the mighty Kak, whose LP has been reissued a few times. |
i have been listening to the creation which has been rocking me out quite a bit.
|
They did "Making Time," right?
Total rocking classic. |
Oooh, Country Joe and the Fish. Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die rag at least. Not ultra-obscure or anything but no one has mentioned them.
|
yes from the rushmore soundtrack. it sounds so much like the who its painful.
|
I'm more of an "Electric Music For The Mind And Body" guy when it comes to Country Joe, especially the tune "Bass Strings." Great stuff.
I even have a copy of the Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band's sole LP, which includes some of the same people in its lineup. It's pretty enjoyable, but I don't listen to it all that often. I was lucky enough to score a sealed original cutout of that one on the cheap. |
The Flaming Groovies!!Woooo!!
|
The Astronauts
|
Astronauts are a good call. In that vein:
Ventures Davie Allen and the Arrows Dick Dale From my own area, I have to give it up to The Litter for being awesome. |
the yardbirds
the misunderstood captain beefheart and his magic band vanila fudge the renegades |
e.g.
les rallizes denudes ,et cetera |
Billy Nicholls
Van Dyke Parks Shanti (really hard to find, digitally and physically) and here's a good one: ![]() ![]() |

In the same vein, I'll throw in Santana who were rediculous. |

good call, they were amazing |
Thanks for all the Delia/White Noise links! Not quite a downloadable/replayable MP3 of White Noise, but lots to at least check into there.

Jet Screamer

I'm among the ones who dig the Creation.
How Does It Feel to Feel has a lot of distorted guitars; The Girls Are Naked has curious lyrics. And their covers were great! Hadn't thought of the Millenium until lungfish mentioned them. That was really good. I love the Flamin' Groovies, when Roy Loney was their singer. He left in 71 to be replaced by a non-rocker. Band photos show that they were guys having fun. Well, pictures from Supersneakers and the other booklets. Cyril Jordan was a gifted guitarist. The Strangeloves were not that fantastic, but at least they wrote Cara-Lin and I Want Candy. |
The Deviants! Ptoof!

I just downloaded Margo Guryan's album and I'm listening to it. Really cool. Thanks! |
Lungfish:
That Jan Dukes De Grey album is one of my very favorites. What a talented group. I can't believe there were only three of them! |

Three essential 60s boxed sets:

I totally agree, though they really only had one worthwhile album, Vincebus Eruptum, and much of that isn't even that good. Their best song is a freaking cover, and yet they do still somehow rule. |
