Watch Iggy Pop cover David Bowie's "The Jean Genie" and "Tonight"

Quote:

Iggy Pop was among the artists appearing at a Tibet House Benefit concert that took place at New York's Carnegie Hall last night [February 22, 2016].

During his set, Pop covered two songs by his late friend and collaborator, David Bowie.

Performing with members of The Patti Smith Group, Pop sang "The Jean Genie"; he was also joined by Sharon Jones for a version of "Tonight".

The benefit was curated by Philip Glass. Glass, FKA twigs and Basia Bulat were among the other artists who peformed.

Genteel Death 02.23.2016 05:23 PM

What was she meant to do in tribute? Be boring about his contribution to space research like everyone else? I love David Bowie but his influence hasn't been a mainstay in pop music for a long time. The new record sounds even worse than Radiohead when they do ''modern'', but suddenly it's the best thing ever because someone was trying to tell you he was dying or some shit. That's shit form for me. Respect to the man. His fans are horrendous people though. They suck. His music sucked for a long time too.

Rob Instigator 02.25.2016 10:05 AM

Genteel is truth giver.

Gaga IS talented, but she is talented in Musical Theatre, that most saccharine and inert and overly-affected of performance arts.... The best of her music is like the best of show-tunes. Not my bag, but she is talented.

Her Bowie tribute was pathetic though, especially that stupid fucking moving keyboard thing...so fucking dumb. Nothing i her Bowie-show-tune-medley gave the impression that Bowie had soulful, meaningful, important musical contributions (because he didn't), and instead showed exactly why Bowie's "music" is boring shit supported by theatrics and costumes. Bowie = KISS middling tunes, with strong vocals, and as much distracting spectacle and scenery as can be conjured up to fool the idiots into thinking the Thin White Duke was some sort of musical genius instead of just a decent pop songwriter and middling performer.

Davie Bowie and Peter Gabriel are the same in my eyes, talented, theatrical, and effectively dull.

Genteel Death 02.25.2016 04:29 PM

I didn't write that Lady Gaga is talented. I love David Bowie's music.

Bytor Peltor 02.29.2016 05:19 PM

When I watched the GAGA tribute in real time, I didn't like it......my wife and daughter loved it! They kept talking about how much GAGA moved and sounded like Bowie. By far their favorite part song/performance in the tribute was, Fashion.

Me, I didn't like how she tried to work in so many parts of songs. I also wasn't a big fan of the "video" aspects. She should have just done longer versions of three songs......just GAGA at the piano doing, "Soul Man" or "Life On Mars" would have been fantastic!

I've been thinking about attending the Chic (Nile Rogers All-Stars) / Duran Duran concert coming up as it's my understanding Nile's will be doing a Bowie tribute and I've never seen Duran Duran......after watching him with GAGA, now I'm not so sure???

Watch David Bowie's Blackstar miniseries on Instagram
Patricia Clarkson stars

David Bowie's album has been turned into a 16-part Instagram mini-series called Unbound.

InstaMiniSeries is an Instagram channel that produces episodic programmes via short videos uploaded to the social media platform.

Before his death, Bowie provided film-makers with unmediated access to the music and images from the album, with "no limits or preconditions".

Unbound stars Rookie Magazine founder Tavi Gevinson and Patricia Clarkson.

The 16-part series was written by Carolynn Cecilia and directed by Nikki Borges.

According to Bowie's official website, the series features "evocative images inspired by the moods suggested in the album's music, lyrics and artwork" rather than a "literal, linear narrative".

Borges said Bowie had always been about "reinvention over repetition" and that "his innovations have influenced our own work as we transform a social media platform into a creative outlet".

Two months gone by and I feel like it's been less than a week.

Revisiting my book collection, I've found a couple of pertinent quotes from other artists:

Quote:

I'm not the easiest person to find. It's not like I go out of my way, I just make myself difficult to pinpoint for numbers of reasons. But there's no way I wouldn't work with Eno, of course. And there's no way I wouldn't work with Bowie, even if he was ninety. We're talking about a guy I'm very fond of and... I couldn't imagine living without, to be quite honest. I can't imagine being me without Bowie. I mean personally, I've got a lot to thank David Bowie for.

....i had the fortunes with me. 10/20. rimbaud's birthday. i was in kφln. so were the several young and lusty terrorists. the tone of the country was meditative, metallic. west germany had an extreme distaste for overt military tactics. murder. hi jack. the need for counter militia was an embarrassment for the new middle class as well as detrimental to the tourist trade.

....the customs official found my sunglasses offensive. italian bodyguard shades. lying on the table with my keys and tools they seemed to take on the flesh of a dangerous drug. i refused to part with them and soon hit the streets with an armed escort. there was no one around save servicemen and teenagers. i arrived at galerie veith turske late greasy and mean.

....one of the boys followed us. his name was dominique. he sat across from me in the music room. i imagined cradling him. picking him up and drawing him in. he had all the motion of a twelve year old girl. the perverse sensuality of innocence.

....another boy came in. he was older and very cute. maybe around 22 and very eager. he had an offering in a wax bag. he said it was the new bowie album. i was very happy. i was nervous and alien in this town and the record was a connection. it was also his contribution toward the raising of souls in this domestic domain.

....i asked dominique to display the drugs. he unrolled what he had from a piece of grey felt lined in smooth rubber tubing. it was green devil and very sticky. he divided the drug. i was given twice as much. i took this as a token of respect and did not protest. veith came in with hash and alcohol. he also brought an exotic dessert composed of the foam of various liquors whipped with egg yolk. boy-2 put side one on. i had difficulty focusing. being among others i was unable to relax and submit into a groove of total aural adventure. it was also impossible to glitter and obliterate before a trio of languorous young men.

....i was expecting a thrill though. since young americans i have been a quiet yet ecstatic fan. station to station inspired radio ethiopia. message units are sprayed liberally between the buds of poppies. when low hit i was in a period of disgrace. of total immobility. low. the fall and potential rising of thomas jerome newton. the soundtrack of bowie's escape into film. a backdrop for months of head-motion. low provided a state of connective id- mutual non-action. of dream and beyond into creation. a stiff neck person can indeed inter/enter the wrath of the creator. and so i was remembering. i was sliding into the dark backward. revisiting all the carnal landscapes of the bruised interior.

....the boys were discussing bowie's pronunciations. in kφln '"heroes"' is sung in sectioned german. i asked them what they thought of bowie's interpretation. they said it was not rock n roll. it was cabaret. behind my shades i can imagine him. there in berlin. in the abandoned section. i imagine him stumbling through old boxes and props in the street. i imagine him in love with the whole world or totally dead. i imagine the last show of thomas jerome newton escaping into life. we are interrupted by a profile. bowie- the- neo- somnambulist enters the atelier of hugo ball. he is the angels of kadinsky. he is the incredibly spiritual phony. a member of the most expiring raceσan actor. specifically designed for the silent screen. one w/the conceit and innocence of the true silent actor.

....in "sons of the silent age" he is the metropolis valentino- very mythic very manic and very misunderstood. harmonious gossip resounds. everyone is murmuring german. i get some kind of anger/anguish out of "blackout". dehumanised speed of the japanese laborer. we can't compete we just get wiped out. i think of my mom losing her job in a factory cause the japs do it faster. i think of transistor you can get for only seven dollars that really works made in japan.

....his new work is not immediately accessible but neither was exile on main street. "beauty and the beast" is a shock that is eventually absorbed into shining acceptance. "joe the lion" is startling too and stretched out by some great guitar. it takes some time to get under the skin.

....records sound different in europe. i think the turntables are faster. theres more treble. i couldn't enter into "v-2 schneider" the way i wanted to. not til much later when i came home. i got off the plane and went downtown and brought the record. i wanted to keep the feel of being in transit. new york- kφln. i don't usually buy a record unless i'm in love (stones) or in a state of hot suspense (idiot).

....i listened to the record for 72 hours. day and night. watching tv and in my sleep. like station to station and low, "heroes" is a cryptic product of a high order of intelligence. committed to survival. the rythum tracks are intel-disco. lysis-discos. the disintegration of brain into lingua into pulse of rythum. high east coast wherein all the musician play w/grace and taste. the title song is wonderful. it exposes us to our most precious and private dilemma. he has captured in this song that desperate moment when one will die for love. the track is pure. i am waiting for my man. but i love the song too and what we love we love repeated. the lyrics are really beautiful. one falls in love and gets lost in its swirl. one projects far aware and across the boundaries of space and placement. we are in dream alive. we are not planets away but seperated by a room or a wall of wire. thats all. '"heroes"' is theme song for every great movie. made remade or yet to come. we the living. we are the girl in a torn wedding dress escaping thru wire into the crown of a bullet. we are the soldier blowing kisses from the back of a train.we are drunk and raging and kneeling in/time in a dead hotel room. we are the heroes of rimbaud's poem royalty. 2 people mystically colliding.

....en effet ils furent rois toute une matinee morning in kφln, side 2 is still on. sometimes we are the victim of the senseless anxiety accompanied with "sense of doubt". the man desires the immediacy of sense in/life. he stalks the stars like alien candles. birthday scars and scars of truth and immortal love. man desires to drift shamelessly into the realm of beauty. in the garden the birds chirp. the garden imprisons an egg which encases the breath of a quivering question. the question mark becomes the curve of a saxophone. bowie is going to bend and pucker and blow like the pusher (pierre clemente) of steppenwolf. instinctive as to beauty down and thru a cellar of noise into a relaxed system of notes and merge with the actor he truly is. the boys of kφln cut out. the younger stayed longer. he had passion for mc5. he was going to quit school and play guitar all day. "secret life" came on. i was packing for america. he was telling me how it felt when he plugged in and connected with his weapon. he was saying a lot of stuff and i was thinking about heroes. find them where they're sleeping. know them where they lie. deep in another system. deep in the heart and motor of the most despised cities in the world.

A bunch of people should be kicked out of that lineup, but in 2000 Chan Marshall did a superlative take on "Wild Is The Wind" on The Covers Record. Not a David original, I know, but still.

I've been fortunate enough to see Bowie perform live twice, in 1996 and 1997, right here in Werchter, Rotselaar. Thoroughly enjoyable shows. Bowie and his band had amazing stage presence and songs to match, it goes without saying.

David Bowie BBC Documentary The Last Five Years to Chronicle His Final Albums
To Air in January, Plus Watch a New Edit of the "Life on Mars" Video

The BBC have announced a new documentary on the late David Bowie entitled The Last Five Years. As its title suggests, it chronicles the musician's final years and the recordings of his last two albums: 2013's The Next Day and 2016's Blackstar (styled as ), as well as getting into Bowie's musical, Lazarus. The Last Five Years will include unseen archive footage, unreleased interviews with Bowie (as well as his friends and collaborators). It will also include an exclusive recording of Bowie's original vocal for Blackstar's "Lazarus." The documentary will air in January. U.K. readers can watch a trailer at the BBC here. Bowie passed away on January 10 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

In other Bowie news, a new edit of Bowie's iconic 1973 video for "Life on Mars" has been released. The video's original director Mick Rock put together a new cut for Parlophone in honor of their new Bowie Legacy best of compilation. In the late '90s Bowie gave Rock the rights to the four Bowie videos he made, as he was never formally paid for them. Check out the new video via The Guardian and go there to read Rock's story about making it.
