Ok, I can't be arsed to find the relevent threads, so I'm dumping my rounds 6 & 7 reviews here. I don't have enough time to be thorough, so...
Bytor Peltor's 'zzajing the idiomatic axis' is pretty lovely. Lots of long and drifty songs which don't particularly intrude upon anything. Um... perhaps that sounds disparaging. It's not. The tapes pretty much a mood piece, so far as I can make out. I enjoyed it. Yes I did. And it went down well with my housemates at the weekend. Winner. Echo Sketch's tape reminded me of the sort of tapes I got when I was a fanzine twat. Which is a good thing. The inclusion of Nouvelle Vague was good. They're pretty much an ideal mixtape band. Can't stand to listen to a whole album of theirs, but in the context of a mix they're alright. There seemed to be a fair bit of lo-fi indie things - not in the sense of 'we've listened to Pavement and we're a bit aloof', but in the sense of 'we like Felt and the Pastels and sighing and quiet drums'. Lots that reminded me of late-90s Scottish indie. Which was, surprisingly, actually quite welcome. I'm a bit too young for nostalgia, but if I weren't, I'd be nostalgic with this tape. Oh, and the tape ran out of songs, and a voice announced that Alison Krauss (sp?) was to follow, which I heartily approve of. It had 'you say it best' at the end, which is about 74 bizillion times better than the Ronan Keating version. |
Oh, and I'm posting my next round tape at the weekend, Mr tapemeister.
|
it's starting to look bad for my participation in this round....
my "stereo system" won't read cd's anymore and the tapedeck won't pause, so I switched to my boombox. after an entire tape side, I discovered that it was only tracking the left side. :( my only real option now would be to record from ipod playlist. if I push stop on the tape deck that works, it makes a nasty click. please advise..... |
If you want, you can make a CDR of the tracks you are using, and I can put them on tape for you.
This is the option our friend Everyneurotic has used as well. This is not a problem for me, as I have infinite number of tapes. Well, maybe not infinite. |
ok, I'll do that then and toss in an extra few bucks to cover yr time and effort.
I've spent the last two nights trying to make a single freakin' mix....good times. :) |
You can also send some of your own artwork if you like. Not everyone makes artwork, its up to you.
You can see past artwork here: Mixtape Artwork |
Any chance of an extension to the closing date on this round?
|

For you, yes. Actually, we need more people anyway, so of course I'll wait. |
I'm recording it now. It's not what I originally planned, but I hope someone will like it.
I'll put it in the post on Monday. |
Pauly your tape came yesterday. Euro coins are quite heavy!
I've not forgot about any of you, and will send as soon as all tapes have arrived at my home. |
Sorry everyone for the huge delay, tapes will on their way tomorrow.
|
awesome!!!
|
Ok kids, all tapes are on their way, at last!
Except for Sonicl's, as I need to get a bigger package to send his in. Tomorrow! |
good work.....
did u by any chance think to send me that cdr by the way? |
Quote:
Yes, it was sent along with the tape! Amazingly it didn't slip my mind. Also, I kept your tape Pauly! I will give a bit of a review soon. |
ok, i got the tape and cdr bryan... tape is fucking great. havent had a good listen yet but will. lets say 95% of the stuff on it is totally new to me!!!!
as for the cdr,, mega thanks, excellent!!!!! |
Fascinating, mail gets to Ireland quicker than it does Canada or Mexico. Seems odd.
Glad to see it made it safely, Pauly! I think you have my tape, I think. Enjoy. |
yep! I should get mine soon if people from the states have recieved theirs
|
i went to the post office today and no dice.
|
Got mine in the mail today! Listening to it right now. The album art has no text, it's crayon on paper entirely. Haha, a really funny a capella blues track with amazing lyrics is on it, along with some good noise songs! Thanks!
EDIT: NIIICEEE, the latest Wu Banga is on it that was released on Ghostface's Fishscale. Good pick. And I believe there's a Yoko Ono song on it that was really good! Correct me if it wasn't yoko, it has the Ono/Patton vocal style |

that's my tape, rob. you want the tracklist? not to be a dick or anything, and it's not directed at inhuman, but i get twitchy whenever someone talks about crazy vocals and calls them "like mike patton" |
inhuman rob: what i meant by "you want the tracklist?" is do you want me to post it on the thread or would you like me to pm it to you?
and sorry, yes, it's yoko ono. i got my round 8 tape, i got bytor peltor's; sounds quite good so far, doing a track by track review as i'm listening. |
my review:
The Last Of The Very Last A Bytor Peltor Mix April 07 SY Mix Tape #8 The artwork is a newspaper clipping, a picture of a woman looking quite stern and with her eyes closed, stting down and reaching out for a plataform shoe on a table besides her, along with a bottle of water, glued to an orange-y paper where all the data (as seen above) was written. Underneat the picture you can read the headline "Supreme Court Wrestles With Insanity Question" from the flipside of the paper Side A: 1. John Zorn, i'm pretty sure it's Naked City, kicking a really wild bop song. by the way, there are no spaces between songs. 2. Yo La Tengo - The Story Of Yo La Tango, awesome choice and perfect follow up! 3. Some sort of british soul-like song, slick production, Wings/McCartney-like in some places, chorus pedaled guitar tones. Keyboards, generic guitar solo, it's an ok song. 4. Acoustic song, pretty vocals and harmonizing with a girl on the chorus. An electric plays some texture stuff for dimension; the male singer doesn't really get me going but the harmonizing is nice. 5. Wah guitar pockets and soft, marching band snares, singer sounds suspitiously like Ian Brown; makes me wish i had Stone Roses albums...actually, he sounds more like Richard Ashcroft, again, i have nothing by the Verve or his solo stuff; good song. 6. Proggy stuff, Pink Floydian vocals with piano figure in the back with some synth lines in between and electronic drums starting at some point. Not my cup of tea but fits right in there...is this Brian Eno? 7. Guitar driven stuff, angular riffs and some synths mixed in there, i think. 8. Starts out theatrical, in a weird way, sounds like something Björk might do; mostly electronics, then acoustic drums kick in and drive the song for a bit then it goes instrumental, the drum beat kinda ruins the mood, though, sounds good but a slower drumbeat would suit it better. Side B: 1. Chill electronica with piano figures, in a way it reminds me of Air. Good climbing arrangement. 2. Slow, bassy drone with a conversation like electronics beneath. (don't know if it's the continuation from the song before) 3. Sounds like someone trying to be a more sophisticated Flaming Lips, it got on my nerves, i'm guessing it's the Polyphonic Spree. It's all fake happy shit, sorry, it got on my nerves. 4. Is this Broadcast? i'm afraid to say Stereolab, but it could be; really good song, i loved it. Amazing arrangement, it builds up great. 5. Acoustic, very melodic, harmonica solo, something about Jesus. The last part of the song is really good. 6. Country-ish stuff, bajo, harmonica, lapsteel; male/female harmonies, it reminds me a bit of Low. 7. Rumbling bass plucks, guitar playing arpeggio and dude singing high pitched and a bit stressed, i like it!! 8. Another acoustic, a male/female duet with some neat harmonizing in the chorus. more folkish than the rest. 9. Jesus Lizard, can't recognize the song though; great as always! 10. That voice sounds familiar, bassy tone, steady beat, good. 11. I don't know why, but this song sounds Swedish; sounds happy. 12. Dancy remix of Garbage - Stupid Girl, i love the original version and actually, their whole first album. Surprised to hear it here. overall, a good, chill tape with some truly great songs in between. i would love to have the songlist. |

the proggy thing is underworld? would have never guessed. and as much as i love sneaker pimps, i know why they didn't include that song in their album, good but not as amazing as the rest. and who would have thought i dug interpol there? thanks for the tape man!!! |
