it is shit. star wars has died and rotted and you all know it. nothing will erase the wonder of the first three movies, but those movies were not sci-fi, nor were they ever meant to be. they are serials, cliiffhangers, old school hollywood adventure movies re-set for the future. in that they are homage.

star trek has always been about ideas, which is what all true science fiction is about. it is morality plays. it involves human decisions, human morality, human essence, not just shooting ships and some BULLSHIT fucking "force" mystical nonsense.

star trek is fantastic.

exactly. let me get one thing clear: if you like star wars but not star trek, YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED STAR TREK. people tend to just blow it off as the quintessential geek series -- and i suppose with the dilithium crystals and beaming up and communicators and such it is, but no more than star wars with its lightsabers and death stars -- but they judge it while totally missing the POINT of the show, which is to explore basic human issues of identity, morality, and place in the cosmos. it is philosophy in the guise of sci-fi, something to which star wars could never lay claim. star wars, while definitely fun, is a mere action thriller series.

Savage Clone 04.26.2006 05:42 PM

George Lucas is a hack writer.

where do you see "death sabres?" i said LIGHTSABERS and DEATH STARS.

HaydenAsche 04.26.2006 09:35 PM

I never watched either.

schizophrenicroom 04.26.2006 09:49 PM

rob- thanks. episode iii is a boatload of fun, but i wouldn't consider star wars sci-fi. episode iv originally started out as just one movie, and only because it was popular it became a series (and thank god, empire strikes back is AWESOME).

nomadicfollower 04.26.2006 09:51 PM

Look at all the trekkies: !@#$%!, Glice, pantophobia, qprogeny79, Rob Instigator, toxic johnny...

You guy do know that Star Wars is to some degree a rip-off of a soviet propaganda film, right? Go watch Sergei Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky and laugh whilst your childhood is destroyed. Star Trek just doesn't sit with me anymore. I vote Doctor Who and Babylon Five.

star wars also rips off a film called The Hidden Fortress by Akira Kurosawa and supposedly the Lensman books by E.E. Smith, but I've never read them.

anyway while it's all well and good to say that star trek deals with weightier themes and is philosophy as sci-fi, it's also hardly a taxing or challenging program to watch, and is far from intellectual or enlightening, it's not much different to something like the X-Men (which I love). and a shit episode of star trek is far more annoying to watch than anything in the original three star wars films (i.e. the real star wars films), even the ewoks. however, george lucas is a gaylord and the new SW films are soul destroying, i don't think he even comprehends what it was that made the original 3 films so great and why everyone liked them.

screamingskull 04.27.2006 05:58 AM

starwars

Rob Instigator 04.27.2006 09:23 AM

star wars, the original was way ahead of it's time in the issues it dealt with.
the next generation will stand the test of time as the best sci fi televisaion show of the past 20 years.
deep space 9 was as dense and rich and harsh and cruel as the very best sci fi shows. it was involved and long and traumatic.
the emotions that star wars deals with are surface emotions, simple emotions, children's emotions.
there is nothing in star wars to compare to the depth and richness adn intelligence of the stra trek series and universe.

Inhuman 04.27.2006 12:06 PM

I never really got into Star Trek at all. The first three Star Wars were classic though, but I wish they never released Episodes 1-3. Episode 3 was the only one that I found decent, but there were waayyy too many flaws in them.

By the way, original Star Trek was almost FORTY YEARS AGO.

and I wanted to lick uhura's legs

Neongod 04.27.2006 02:19 PM

Though this thread is based on preference/opinion, look at the big picture.

6 SW movies vs. double or so that many ST movies and a ridiculous number of TV series.
And many hate the SW prequels...so that's 3 movies that had such a huge impact. This makes it far superior beyond opinion, but opinions as we know are like assholes...we've all got one.

Han Solo:
"I think my eyes are getting better. Instead of a big dark blur I see a big light blur."

Luke Skywalker:
"There's nothing to see. I used to live here you know."

Han Solo:
"You're going to die here you know. Convenient."

i'm not sure how difficult this is to understand for someone living in england, but in a democracy there's no such thing as a "wrong answer" when it comes to voting.

Savage Clone 04.27.2006 08:02 PM

One of the flaws of democracy, obviously.

pokkeherrie 04.27.2006 08:14 PM

yes, it can be a bit of a hassle.

Southern Surfer 04.30.2006 07:16 AM

Star Wars is strictly for children. Star Trek had far more original and engrossing stories than Lucas ever dreamed of filming.

finding nobody 04.30.2006 09:26 AM

everyone check out the new favorite jedi pole!

atari 2600 05.13.2006 06:45 PM

Star Wars, but I love the old Star Trek episodes. when i was a freshman in college i watched the next generation for like a season & i liked it, but then i stopped watching it. i have never seen any of the other spin-offs...not even one episode...

attn trekkies & trekkers (qprogeny79 might want to take a look at this)

g4tv is now showing the original series...there were some on this afternoon & at 4 pm they showed the episode "shore leave" as part of star trek 2.0, an interactive show featuring onscreen online chat, etc...
