I received "Pale Sketches" in the post yesterday. I haven't listened to it yet, but if the music is as beautiful as the artwork it's going to be something pretty special.
|
After two days of listening to "Pale Sketches", I can officially announce: It is brilliant. There is some really really beautiful music on there, in a Cocteau Twins kind of way. It doesn't actually sound like Cocteau Twins, but it has a similar sort of orchestral feel to it. To anyone who has listened to Jesu and even remotely liked it, I say: Buy this CD, and you will fall in love.

pale sketches, to me, presents a more trip hop influence on jesu, in addition to the dream pop and doom metal sounds.
a song is called "dummy", for corn's sake. |
A "friend" of mine once told me that if I already have most of Neurosis's releases (which I do) I shouldn't bother with Jesu... because they aren't doing anything that Neurosis hasn't already done better.
I guess I should stop listening to my friends. It's about time I checked these guys out. |
huh?
that's just plain ignorant. they probably thought you meant isis (and that in itself is a big misconception). |

I've actually had several people tell me that Isis are Neurosis knockoffs... as well as reading the same in countless reviews. I do own a couple Isis releases, and have honestly not been able to get into them much. I'm gonna have to give Jesu the shot they apparently deserve, now that I know they aren't apeing Neurosis (who I love) or Isis (who I'm indifferent toward) or anyone else for that matter. |
awww damn i was gonna go see them two weeks ago, but i didn't cause no one would come with me. also i only just got into them little before the showdate.
|
Finally picked up Lifeline the other day and was pleased, but a little underwhelmed.
It's good, but it just sounds like throwaways from Conqueror, nothing special... ...and the track with Jarboe kinda got on my nerves a little. I doubt this one is going to get much replay. |
Yeah, Jesu and Neurosis are pretty far-off in sound. They both have guitars and play slowly at times. That's about it. And, for the record, Neurosis is a much better band in every respect. But Jesu is worth investigating.
Since this thread started, I think Jesu released 3 things. Ridiculous. Lifeline isn't very good, is it? I haven't heard Pale Sketches yet though I will real soon. That split with Eluvium also was quite boring. And he's coming out with ANOTHER split at the end of the year. I mean, Jesu are great, but dude needs to slow the fuck down, jesus... |
I have a couple of uncirculated Jesu shows so I'm thinking of starting a vine - anyone interested?

true, you can hear that, but the other songs weren't all that.
he was probably having gear problem the whole time, too. |
Justin Broadrick of Jesu/Godflesh fame has teamed up with Jarboe of Swans fame for a group dubbed J2. The pair recently inked a deal with The End Records for the release of their debut album which is expected out this spring.
|
Wonderful.
|
yay?
i don't know, i liked that song on lifeline they did together. |
I didn't particularly care for it.
I've never been a fan of Jarboe, and although i respect what she does, it's jsut not something that appeals to me. I'm starting to think that Broadrick is running out of steam... Lifeline was disappointing, and I really don't think a Jarboe colab album is going to win any points with me, but whatever... Do ya thang, potna. |
but what about grey machine?!
justin + dave cochrane + aaron turner + dude who plays bass in jesu who i always forget his name = a good time. lifeline was more like an excuse to release the jarboe track, these past releases, it's like justin was going through the motions. i'm glad he's taking time off from jesu to explore other areas so he can approach jesu fresh later on. |
the more i listen to lifeline, the more i think it's good (as usual, the second track is where it's at)... pale sketches isn't that great though.

I'm getting really excited.
|
Sorry... I forgot that other people still have to see them on this tour.
Anyway, the merch stall had: Conqueror CD Silver CD Pale Sketches CD Sundown / Sunrise 12" Self-Titled vinyl some other vinyl some other band's CD that Justin Broadrick has done a couple of remixes on a couple of t-shirts (one white, one black) a hoodie (black) |
I hope to get the Silver CD and the hoodie.
Thanks sonicl. |
I can't remember - have you heard Pale Sketches? It's my favourite Jesu recording, by a long way. You should get that, if you haven't already.
|
I have a spare (sealed) copy of the Pale Sketches CD if anyone's interested.
|
Do you accept payment by Paypal? :D

not quite, they mostly put out black metal (like sigh, nokturnal mortum and dodheimsgard) or weird shit in a prog way (like sleepytime gorilla museum and unexpect). yeah, they have some semi goth shit but it's not the bulk. ohh they also have looooordy! on their roster. |

I have heard it but it's so far my least favourite Jesu record so far. Maybe it's a grower, I don't know, but it just sounds a bit lame to me (especially compared to "Conqueror" which is my fav). Too many beats and keybords on Pale Sketches for my taste, I'd say. |
yeah pale sketches kinda sucks...
anyway, since i'll probably never have another place to say this on the forum, sleepytime gorilla museum is amongst the best bands i've ever seen live. |
Torrent of last night's show: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-d....php?id=175117.
|
jesu is fucking amazing. saw them live yesterday and it was a lovely expirience (also saw sunn o))), the ex and motorpsycho, fuck yes!)
how do you pronounce jesu anyways? |
i think it's pronounced jeh-soo.
|
Well.. you could just watch a justin broaderick interview, because he namedrops jesu about 70000 times.. but...
In the US, most people seem to pronounce the word Jesu as if it were German (or Latin), with a "y" sound as the first consonant. This is not the case in Great Britain, where the word "Jesu" is pronounced with a standard English "j" sound. http://www.answers.com/topic/jesu-jo...n-s-desiring-1 Personally, I've always thought it was and always said "yay-zoo", but.. either way. |
Quote:
Agreed. Saw them on the weekend. Great band, but very very boring on stage. |
Yes, I saw them live a week ago and they sort of sucked. Nice show, but really, really boring.
