What I found so appealing about DKs was their great music, but it was tinged with REALLY dark (very, very funny) humour, and intelligence. At a time when a lot of punk sounded completely witless, dumb and just plain bad, they stood out and above just about everybody else. Plastic Surgery Disasters (their masterpiece) contained all the elements that made them so great.
Frankenchrist contained none of these elements. I was a massive fan at the time, but I couldn't remember a single song on this album when I started writing this. I just had a look on Amazon to remind myself. The dark humour had turned into horrible novelty songs. The music had become turgid, cliched punk-by-numbers. And the targets of Jello's rage were soft and pointless(MTV?, "jocks"?, for fuck's sake). |
to each their own...
SOUP IS GOOD FOOD! i actually know a bunch of people who think frankenchrist is their best, which surprises me.. |

Actually I'm a big DK fan, and my listing Misfits and DK, you'll notice, even though perhaps I should have clarifyied my point, that both of these bands reunited without thier original singer. Sure this DK version (not sure if they are still active) have not recorded any new material under the name (unlike Misfits), but DK reuniting in the first place, sans Jello, its just atrocious. |
...and you will know us by the trail of dead.

tupac, man after he died everything he put out was shit
|
Green Day has become a parody of themselves. They aren't cool anymore because they try to hard to be cool.

Up until the death of Cliff Burton, Metallica were mostly killer and rarely filler. And Justice For All falls prey of being too 'technical', but it still remains a good record and the last good one that Metallica produced (St. Anger has its momentS but it is mostly shit). |

dark angel, darkness descends is like the best thrash album ever but then you hear time does not heal and it's like, what the fuck?
dinosaur jr, everything until hand it over went from good to amazing, but then the beyond, they just went "ohh, let's preten we're dinosaur jr"...a parody of themselves, as you intellectuals say. britney spears christina aguilera sepultura corrosion of conformity guns n' roses michelle branch deftones pretty much any "nu metal" band that wasn't awful to begin with. dropkick murphys (they were't spectacular, they were descent, but ever since like their second album...) lamb of god meshuggah dillinger escape plan norma jean in flames |
no doubt

oh definitely! also chimaira, their first album, pass out of existance, is like the best grinding groove metal with fucked up electronics album ever and then they turned into another generic melodic death metal band trying to be at the gates, they even now disown the album. unbelieveable. speaking of at the gates, the haunted; holy shit do they reek now!!! slayer, they are not that bad but they are not that fantastic, i mean on record. arch enemy, even though they never "ruled" they were quite good at what they did, then turned into shit. you can't forget napalm death in this list. |
haha man i totally forgot dillinger. they just SUCK now.
i disagree with deftones though... i mean, self-titled was awful, but saturday night wrist was good... i mean, they're not writing around the fur/white pony-worthy stuff but they don't necassarily stink now... i'm also going to add bad religion to this list... |
Butthole Surfers were a painful aural experience, in their last days.

Speaking of heavy stuff like that, I'd also these ones to the list: The Gathering Anathema Tiamat |
the gathering, home kinda sucks, but before that, wow! i still have faith in them to come out with another genre-defying album.
anathema? i have to disagree, a natural disaster is just amazing, sure it's not heavy but it has great songs. i've heard a lot about tiamat but never heard them. let's throw in samael, their techno-goth stuff is mostly generic, can't compare them to the early stuff. cephalic carnage too, the minute they started making records, they went to shit. |

I think she was already not the original singer wasn't she? Perhaps that's the reason you only like the early stuff. In that case it may be good news ;) edit: this is what she's doing now: http://www.aguadeannique.com/ Sounds a lot like Skin to me. |
Sometimes I remember how good (The) Offspring was and I get weirded out for a moment.
I agree with the Liz Phair mentions. I don' t understand why people are listing dinosaur jr., though. |
hahah oh yeah the offspring. i really enjoyed listening to them for a while. the fact that i liked them is more comical than weird though.
|
Someone who lists The Offspring as a good band that they never were will never understand listing Dinosaur Jr as the shite band that they have become.
|
bah, Beyond was one of the best albums released this year
but I agree that the offspring were always garbage |
i'm not sayin the offspring are good. i'm just reminescing about when i liked listening to them in like 7th grade.
|
i never said i liked their earlier stuff, i just said their last album wasn't that good.
actually, they were kinda meh before anneke joined the band. but you do bring me bad news, it sucks, i really liked the gathering with anneke. |
people liking the beyond actually demonstrates the number of closet neoclassical shredder fans here.
there's pretty much no difference between j mascis soloing over most of the beyond and, say, a joe satriani album...oh, right, satriani isn't "cool". |
i thought beyond was fine. i'm sort of neutral towards it.
|
Agreed Zeropumpkins. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were the first to pop into my head when I saw this thread. I saw them twice waaaaaaay back when and they were at the top of my list of LIVE bands then. I've been hoping against hope for YEARS that they'd finally get back to the way they sounded with the original band. It'll never happen! Right at the release of Mother's Milk I never could stand Chad on drums next to Jack Irons. Jack was a MACHINE! Chad just keeps the beat.

but you made me laugh, so thanks for that |

well, is their anything else in that album? besides, like, four mumbled sentences. |
dinosaur blows. just overglorified cock rock.
offspring.. "all i want" is the fucking hit of the century! uhh.. i forgot to check, but did people list mayhem or burzum? they turned to shit. i think whoever said butthole surfers definitely hit it on the head.. that band just got worse and worse.. |
i was going to say mayhem, but ordo ad chao is pretty fucking awesome, they did turn around.
burzum, totally. actually, most black metal bandas that last more than 6 or 7 years, especially if they are norwegian. think about it, only darkthrone remain consistant and they are "good" not amazing. khanate, i'm so glad they broke up, capture and release was the blandest, most boring album ever. yes suck now and have sucked since "owner of a lonely heart" ED:: oh! oh! rancid, they were never like the most trailblazing band but they were really good, then they signed to a major, tim started rapping, had kelly osbourne on their videos and generally started sucking bad bad. |
I agree on the Rancid thing. But again, it's another Metallica situation for me - their fans are the worst thing about the band.
|
The worst thing about metallica is the part where he says I'm madly in anger with you.
|
i really like st. anger.
the songwriting (well, i dunno if there actually is "songwriting") is shit, but the production is awesome (in a really weird way), and it has some of the weirdest/sickest guitar tones i've ever heard. everyone should listen to a few songs from it to hear what i mean. and the song invisible kid has like 30 riffs. |

What? Do you want me to explain why mtv punk as played by American dudes in shorts sounds like shit? Sure that's a well documented fact, without me having to rant about it, alright? |
I dont know if anyones mentioned Guns N roses but thats pretty much the archetype for me.
I tend to enjoy earlier Oasis songs when they come on the radio. Anyone who remembers Idlewild, they were great until the bassist left (its such a cliche but it was true) |

whaaaaa? trompe le mond is their best record! sure, bossanova wasn't very good, but damn...
as far as their reunion goes, how can you say they were great before they reunited? they have recorded two songs since reuniting; one a cover and one.. just some throwaway thing no one cares about. also, their live playing is better than ever. so, they actually are better than they've ever been, technically. they have not released a full length record since reuniting, so i'm not sure how you can say they "stink" now. unless the idea of them ever playing their songs for people who never got to the see them before bothers you that much... then, i guess they do "stink". |
