Interesting stuff and, as perverse as it may sound, the reviewer may have a point about it being his best since The River. As great as Nebraska is, it's not an album I can listen to at will. Like most of his stuff up to and including The River, Magic has much more of that 'any-occasion' vibe.

ED: In full agreement about Livin' in the Future by the way.

Bump as we're closer to the end of the year

batreleaser 12.09.2007 12:01 AM

melt bannana, majic markers, grinderman, polysics, shellac, neurosis, om, boris, grinderman (even though im pretty sure it came out in 06), panda bear, radiohead, battles, thurston, sunburned, deerhoof, black dice, soft circle, weedeater, deerhunter, ghostface/wu tang,

im gonna go ahead and say this was an above average year for records

batreleaser 12.09.2007 12:03 AM

fuck i forgot jesu

the new liars was fuckin pussy, literally, they made two extremly far out records and in all honesty i thought they were on some next level shit, totally different than any other "indie" bands, and yes i know they change thier sound up, but its not very brave to go to near unlistenable noise, to weird ambient chanting shit, to straight up rock songs, fuck that. i still have faith in them tho.

2. new neurosis [well, they never release a bad record, do they?]

3. new toddle [fucking perfect songwriting, absolutely amazing production, etc etc etc. "college rock" the way it's meant to be played]

4. new stars of the lid [beautiful, epic, expansive. for something so sparsely-arranged, you'll find yourself wanting to listen to it often -- for all its subtle nuances. truely music to live in.]

5. new polysics [well, they also haven't released a bad record. chalk this one up as their weirdest yet.]

OTHER ALBUMS I DUG:
new jesu (which one?!)
new residents
new panda bear
new growing
new venetian snares
new bloodthirsty butchers
new animal collective
new motocompo
new growing
new sloth love chunks
new boredoms (well, not "new", but.. super roots 9)
new experimental dental school (split)
new gein & the graverobbers
new tuks (not sure if it's 2007 actually)
new zazen boys (live album)
new six organs of admittance
new shellac
new om
new sir richard bishop
new oren ambarchi
new battles
new mammal
new boris
new dodheimsgard
new william basinski (well, not "new" but..)
new eluvium
new weedeater
new pre (basically, anything skin graft released, except aids wolf)
new melt banana
new pan sonic
new oxbow

ALBUMS THAT DIDN'T LIVE UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS:
new future of the left (liked it at first but eh..)
new low
new radiohead (very meh)
new deerhoof (another one i liked at first)

ALBUMS THAT JUST SUCKED:
new sightings
new the locust (no surprise)
new les savy fav (how can such a talented band write such an embarassingly bland record?! jesus!)
new throbbing gristle (no surprise there either)
new tomahawk
new hella
new pelican
new queens of the stone age

That's all I can recall hearing this year that's considered new.

Luckily, the year's not over, and I'm expecting new Autechre and new Behold.. the Arctopus. Oh fuck, isn't a new Wire CD coming out too?!

HOLY FUCK DID YOU SAY NEW WIRE? FUCK YEAH!

Torn Curtain 12.09.2007 06:04 AM

Additions to my lists:

Between OK and great:
Neil Young - Chrome dreams II

OK: Sigur Rós - Hvarf / Heim (the DVD is surely much more interesting)

I haven't heard the new Bowie but apparently it sucks.

atsonicpark 12.09.2007 08:17 AM

I don't think I listed rhys chatham "A criminal grail"; that did come out in 2007 right? If so, make that the best record of the year.

Seriously, everyone here go listen to Toddle. Every part of every song is a hook!

And yes.. Wire - Read and Burn 3 is out, and it's cool.

batreleaser 12.09.2007 02:18 PM

The read and burn eps are good enough, but i dont think ive ever obsessivley listened to any of them. Not like i still obsessivley listen to Pink Flag and 154.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 12.09.2007 05:24 PM

I'm listening to Read & Burn 3 and I'm feeling kind of disappointed. Even using Send as a reference point instead of their early stuff I'm disappointed. I'm not fond of the way it is mixed. It doesn't grip me the way that their other stuff does.

atsonicpark 12.09.2007 07:39 PM

it's cool. it's not.. great. it's just cool.

new zazen boys ep is out! getting it now!

edit: just got it, uploaded it here.. http://www.sendspace.com/file/nkxtjl

Sounds very battles-influenced compared to their older stuff.. weird!

dionysusundone 12.09.2007 09:40 PM

So that new Einsturzende's good? I've been meaning to pick it up but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Albums I really dug:
Magik Daggers-Black Diamonds EP
Deadchovsky-Spiritus Sancti Bizarre
Angels Of Light-We Are Him
Naked On The Vague-Blood Pressure Sessions
Chromatics-IV
Glass Candy-Beatbox

Good to see some love for my Sydney buddies. Check out the EP they did recently called "The Sad Sun" EP. I personally like it better, it reflects the weird kinda gothic jams they've been doing recently.

Also Matthews solo project Lamp Puffer (was called Bad Tables until a few weeks ago) is pretty cool.

Wow, it sure is a good feeling to read all the indie bullshit Pitchfork dicksucking awful album loving in this thread and little to no recognition (except for some of you) of truely great albums.

Wait, good feelings are followed by vomit and a little bit of bleeding, right?

atsonicpark 12.11.2007 06:21 PM

Also, people on this board actually listen to the Smashing Pumpkins.

...

drrrtyboots 12.11.2007 10:06 PM

Dirty Projectors' Rise Above is one great big HIGH.

Everyneurotic 12.12.2007 12:53 AM

i'll post my personal low points and disappointments, then at some point the high points (work in progress):

-the weirdness
-beyond
-boss
-in rainbows (disc one has some great songs but it's the first underwhelming and static rh album since pablo honey)
-grinderman (could have been an spectacular ep, ended up being an ok to good album).
-big business - here come the waterworks (after the brilliant head for the shallow, the guys do an album of mediocre melvins-wannabe songs).
-spoon - ga ga ga ga ga (good but i haven't really listened to it again)
-angelcorpse - of lucifer and lightning (very by the numbers for a return of a brilliant band)
-pelican - city of echoes (like b-sides of their last album)
-pretty much everything on load records (mediocre releases by great bands, mostly)
-modest mouse - the ship sank whatever (even though some tunes are amazing)
-low - drums and guns (a failed experiment, "your poison" and "murderer" almost make up for the duds)
-chinese stars - left side of the brain (dire, awful band)
-xasthur - defective epitaph
-von südenfed
-wu-tang clan - 8 diagrams (some songs are good, though)
-beirut - the flying club cub
-down III
-black dice - load blown (but i didn't expect much)
-iron and wine - shepherd's dog
-caribou - andorra
-qui - love's miracle
-blues control (seemed half baked)
-leslie keffer and inca ore tape (had big hopes for both)

Maybe because Corgan has great songwriting skills sometimes (cf obscured for instance).

Everyneurotic 12.12.2007 03:01 PM

ohh yeah, more lows, ultra lows actually.

-björk - volta (because it's the only one of hers that i had any expectations and yeah, you know)
-m.i.a. - kala (how people consider it music is beyond me)

I have to add Oxbow's The narcotic story to my "Great"s. Best album of 2007 from what I've heard.

the ikara cult 12.15.2007 06:07 PM

Liars self titled was really disappointing, Strawberry Jam was really appointing.
Ive lost touch with modern music this year im afraid. So much so im getting a rekkid player for Xmas.
And that Battles business has done nothing for me, which i think is a healthy sign of my own cynicism
