I really thought Battles was a disappointment. The EPs prior to it were fucking great and not like anything else around at the time. They kind of just made that sound more Pitchfork/Urban Outfitters.

Top 50? Way too much for me to type. Also, I haven't even listened to the majority of the albums released this year. It would definately include the following:
Xiu Xiu/Larsen
Avey Tare
Animal Collective
Panda Bear
Xiu Xiu Remixed and Recovered
Wolf Eyes(The black wings over the sand or whatever it was called)
Battles
XBXRX
Mong Hang
Deerhoof
Arcade Fire

atsonicpark 12.24.2007 04:04 PM

Word. :)

Everyneurotic 12.24.2007 05:04 PM

you know something? i need to redo my list because i forgot some great stuff (wooden shjips, shining, the angelic process).

so yeah, that was a draft.

--

even though mirrored is not perfect and very trendy, i can't stand the eps anymore, i loved them but they sound very dated now.

i wasn't wearing my glasses earlier, so when i first read what you wrote i thought you wrote the barenaked ladies need to be on your list.

Iain 12.27.2007 05:47 PM

I forgot about the Ainotamenishis record. That might be my favourite of all this year.

EDIT: I can't wait to see all the unwarranted # 1's for stuff like "Mirrored" and "Person Pitch".. sure, that stuff's good, but the best of the year? Hardly. I heard probably 150-200 things this year, I heard most of the stuff you guys listed, so I think I have a pretty good list myself.. There were plenty of disappointments (new Hella, Liars, Jesu's "Pale Sketches", etc.) but it was a pretty good year all in all. If for some ODD reason, I put a 2006 album anywhere on that list, put stuff like the new Bloodthirsty Butchers in place of it.

Also, I really need to hear the Zu/Nobokazu Takemaru disc.. fuck.. Also, been meaning to hear the new Circus Devils (SGT. DISCO), because the description makes it sound awesome. Oh and fuck - new Pram? I'm there. OH, and I just heard about a new Fatal Flying Guilloteens too so I gotta check that out.

i had no fucking clue athletic automation had a full length yet. i love their split with made in mexico though, and live theyre amazing.

SYRFox 09.23.2008 01:19 PM

One year after, I have to say that the 2007 album I've enjoyed the most was Black Dice's Load Blown. Pure awesome bliss, it still destroys my mind at every listen.
I am not good at doing list, but my top would include Battles, Animal Collective, Pantha du Prince (that one very high), To Kill A Petty Bourgeoisie, Panda Bear, among others

noisereductions 09.23.2008 01:24 PM

STRAWBERRY JAM was a definite contender. As was Devin The Dude's WAITING TO INHALE.

Everyneurotic 09.23.2008 01:29 PM

ahh shit!!! forgot about mong hang!!!

atsonicpark 09.23.2008 03:20 PM

Yes!!!!!!

SYRFox 09.23.2008 03:41 PM

Haa adam I was going to argue with a sentence in your text under your top 50 but then I realised it was months ago so that's no point
Which makes this message useless by the way

atsonicpark 09.23.2008 03:44 PM

I sure hope you weren't about to disagree with "album title of the year: How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul?"

PAULYBEE2656 09.23.2008 03:47 PM

How You Sell a lemon Sole to a lemon Soleless People Who Sold Their lemon Soles ?

yknow lemon sole is one of the hardest fish to cook just right... 10 seconds either way and its raw or burned!

mmmmmmmmmmm

sorry, carry on!

but that's not anything worthy. I was glad to find the new Black Dice on your list, though I think it deserves more than #44 - as I said it was my favorite record of last year, I found it really impressive, brainmelting and catchy, abrasive and accessible, harsh and groovy at the same time. Seriously, "Roll Up", I could listen to that sound without any variations for hours. It's actually my mobile answering machine

atsonicpark 09.23.2008 03:53 PM

Yeah, Black Dice are okay. I lose interest with every record they put out. "Manoman" was one of the best songs of the year though.

"Mirrored" still kinda sucks (mainly because of the shitty songwriting) and "Person Pitch" is alright but kinda boring.

lechaoscestmoi 09.23.2008 04:01 PM

i like mirrored only cuz i was feeling nostalgic and started playing street fighter with a snes emulator right when the album came out, so i kept listening to it as background music while playing.. and now i can't help but think about it as the street fighter soundtrack or something.

atsonicpark 09.23.2008 04:01 PM

Hahaha.

That's how I feel about william basinki's disintegration loops and xenogears.

batreleaser 09.23.2008 05:07 PM

man, i think person pitch is beatiful. its my favorite thing animal collective related thing since sung tungs for sure.

PAULYBEE2656 09.23.2008 05:14 PM

mirrored is a great album...

ill get my coat!

atsonicpark 09.23.2008 05:32 PM

I'd take any Avey Tare or any other Panda Bear album over "Person Pitch".

batreleaser 09.23.2008 05:37 PM

you serious, i hate the avey tare record, and the first panda is ok to me. i duno, i just absolutley adore the vocal arrangements on there, just me.

atsonicpark 09.23.2008 05:40 PM

Sure, it's got some pretty parts, but it's nothing that exciting. Actually, it sounds like a very poor Beach Boys record with a lot of boring samples and songs that don't really go anywhere. Just not that interesting to me... obviously, he's a great singer, and on that principle alone it's a good record but not something worth worshipping.

Everyneurotic 09.23.2008 05:42 PM

to me, that panda bear album is like a test trial of the treatments done to the songs on strawberry jam.

at first i really liked it but now, i don't even think about that album. strawberry jam grew big time for me, those songs are amazing and among the best they have ever done.

haha, that's a good thing to think about. I've got one from back in the days:

UFO:Enemy Unknown + Greenday-Kerplunk (was 13 years old back then)

Ha, most people I know seem to think as you do that Black Dice are getting worse and worse with every release, but I actually feel exactly the opposite: I think Load Blown is by far their best yet. I don't mean that Beaches & Canyons or Creature Conforts suck - I love them as well, but I feel like there were always boring moments on their first releases. On Load Blown, everything manages to be catchy, every second gets my total attention. It's not about the "sonic landscapes" anymore (but Eric Copeland's album was there for that, and it was great), but seriously I think it's better than anything they've done before. A tornado of braindestruction and destructionbeats

I like Panda Bear even more than Sung Tongs.....well, the first half is great.

I actually hated AC when they first came out.....they're ok.

I def. think Strawberry Jam is their best album if I had to pick one I liked the best.

PAULYBEE2656 09.24.2008 04:53 AM

i love the formula one engine at full chat sample on the first track of panda pitch!!

strawberry jam is a fucking class album

black dice are the most up and down band ever... when bad they are shocking, when good they rule..... load blown is damn good, but the one before, broken ear record... piss poor, possibly the worst album i have heard in about 5 or 6 years....

ive covered battles...

am i the only one who listed lcd soundsystem in the top 10 of the year?? that album is fucking emlike, almost every song is an amazing pop tune!

SYRFox 09.24.2008 06:22 AM

I would not put LCD Soundsystem in my top 10, but that album is really good yes. I prefer the self titled one though

atsonicpark 09.24.2008 07:37 AM

Beach and Canyons was the only album by them I really thought was GREAT.

I dunno if they're getting worse, just uninteresting.

batreleaser 09.24.2008 09:24 AM

i give black dice the utmost respect for the sole purpose of how much theyve evolved this year, and evolved sucesfully. 10 years ago no mone would have thought that this band of 18 year old noisecore psychos would be making a record like 'creature comforts' with idm, post punk, hip hop, ambience, pretty amazing.
