Some bands I like to name check, And one of them is REM, Classic songs with a long history Southern boys just like you and me. R - E - M Flashback to 1983, Chronic Town was their first EP Later on came Reckoning Finster's art, and titles to match: South Central Rain, Don't Go Back To Rockville, Harbourcoat, Pretty Persuasion, You were born to be a camera, Time After Time was my least favourite song, Time After Time was my least favourite song. The singer, he had long hair And the drummer he knew restrait. And the bass man he had all the right moves And the guitar player was no saint. So lets go way back to the ancient times When there were no 50 states, And on a hill there stands Sherman Sherman and his mates. And they're marching through Georgia, we're marching through Georgia, we're marching through Georgia G-G-G-G-Georgia They're marching through Georgia, we're marching through Georgia, marching through Georgia G-G-G-G-Georgia and there stands REM (Aye Sir, Aye Sir, Aye Sir they're coming, Aye Sir, move those wagons, Aye Sir, Artillery's in place Sir, Aye Sir, Aye Sir, hide it, hide it, Aye televison personalities- part time punks irish band giveamanakick in one song has a lyric "you are thurston for a moore" Sir, run, run.) |

Donna Summer's I Feel Love was about her five year affair with Love's loping, loathsome, lily-livered, limp-wristed, overrated, over-sized, overbearing, cockeyed, cock squiff, big cocked, big haired, fat assed, fat faced, fatuous, freaky, beaky, squeaky-voiced, mealy-mouthed, touchy feely, creepy crawly, fat, twat, shat in her hat, Arthur Lee.
|
Does anyone else think it's shit to namecheck other bands unless you're hip-hop or Mark E Smith?

PAULYBEE already mentioned TV Personalities' Part Time Punks (they'd like to buy the O Level's single [...] but they buy the Lurkers instead [...] but they always got 2.50, to go and see the Clash - tonight).
TVP titled one great album They Could Have Been Bigger than the Beatles. TVP songs : Posing at the Roundhouse (I flirted with the idea of creating a t-shirt for the DDN stop there, with some reshuffling of the lyrics, but found it was too much trouble and time) - they mention Billy (Idol). I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives Where's Bill Grundy Now? - reference to the Sex Pistols on television. Sad Mona Lisa - "She likes to go shopping on saturdays, especially to Kensington Market, for acid house records her mother hates, and posters of Morten Harket" (A-Ha singer) Salvador Dali's Garden Party - lyrics would change if they played live, on the studio version Debbie Harry was there, live Jesus & the Mary Chain were there, Iggy Pop was there, TV Personalities were there and so on. Evan Doesn't Ring Me Anymore - Evan being Evan Dando. Goodnight Mr Spaceman - "Oh, the train's gone past my station, oh bloody hell, I wish I'd signed to Creation [...] I've taken three e's but I still can't dance like Bobby Gillespie" Gainsbourg wrote Beau oui comme Bowie for Isabelle Adjani. Thee Headcoats - I Hate the Fucking NME (David Bowie, Jarvis Cocker, Sting, Paul Weller, Beck, Rocket From the Crypt, the Clash, Boyzone, Spice Girls, even me in the NME...) Jonathan Richman recorded a song called Velvet Underground about the group, on a jolly nice record called I, Jonathan. The Launderettes, from Oslo - WWJJD, What Would Joan Jett Do? |
One more from the TVPs, on their new album theres a track called Velvet Underground :
"its the eighth mystery of the world Ive found how did the Velvet Underground get that sound?" "don't sit under the apple tree with anyone but Lou Reed" fucking sublime stuff |
Syd Barrett- Bob Dylan Blues
Jeffrey Lewis - New Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror - a fine song, references Dylan and Young, but is mainly about getting raped by a Will Oldham look-alike. Great stuff! |
Built to Spill-Distopian Dream Girl. "My stepfather looks just like David Bowie, but he hates david bowie."
|
Outl4w : "sonic youth"
|
Quote:
She wrote this because of his fondness for dressing up like a girl when he was a little boy. |
But my favorite.

xiu xiu also mentions the pogues, unless that's already been mentioned on this thread.
The Fall mentioned Captain Beefheart on a lot of songs, the most recent being on "reformation"... on the new album, on 50 year old man, he goes, "Don't forget you tried to ruin me, Steve Albini." or something along those lines. Bad Religion mentions themselves in "21st Century Digital Boy" and "Walk Away" which may not be what you're looking for, but oh well. They kind of say it in a 3rd person way, instead of saying "Hey! We're bad religion!" In reply to one of the above posts, I find it a little odd that Thee Headcoats would hate Rocket from the Crypt. If you're familiar at all with those two bands.. it just seems odd. Then again, the dude from Six Organs said he hates John Fahey's music so who knows.... |
oh Hayden already mentioned the pogues in hives hives.
|

hypocrite. i'm losing a lot of respect for ben chasny, starting with that mediocre shelter from the ash album. |
Yeah, I read some interview, some guy asked about Robbie Basho and Ben was like, "Yeah, he's okay." And the guy asked about Fahey and Ben was like, "No, I don't like his music at all. He's never been an influence. I like a lot of his writings though."
I mean, seriously, you're playing predominantly finger picked acoustic guitar stuff, how can you not like the GOD of that type of music?! That just makes no sense to me honestly. I mean, personal taste is personal taste so I try to give the benefit of the doubt that he may just not love Fahey's songs and that's understandable I GUESS...but Fahey's music is so pure and technical that I just can't see it not inspiring Ben at all. I also read another interview where he said he hates comparisons to Fahey, and he said people aren't even listening to his music, all they hear is an acoustic guitar and they automatically make the assumption that he's influenced by Fahey. |
instant rep for anyone who knows what im talking about
blood sausage.... billy joel. |
Can't believe this one hasn't been mentioned yet
