ahea ahea ahea ahea ahea. here, you've got yourself some indie cred, now go brag about it to your local nerdy record store. yes, and mudhoney are such a great original band. right |
i was 21 when silverchairs first album came out, ididn't like them then, i don't like them now nothing to do with indie cred junior
|
Silverchair were my favourite band when i was 8. I went to pawn there CDs when i was 12 but they said i had to be 17 to sell things
|
I've gotta give it up for the Avalanches. Some of the better 'electronic' stuff that has surfaced in the past couple of years.
|
Anyone here heard of You Am I?

I'll tentatively say up to Hourly, Daily they're not too shabby; their new album sucks some serious mammal genitalia. |

Liars--- Just Saw Em Last Night In Chicago And The Show Killed-lots Of Energy-- Drums Not Dead Is A Great Record And They Do The Songs Well Live--they Also Played A Few Songs From Earlier Records--- Has Anybody Else Caught Them On Their Tour??? Maybe Even The Chicago Show???? It Was Great- Angus Was Awsome, Very Funny- Very Energetic, and Had Some Awsome Pedals Only 2 But They Were Pretty Cool- Idk What They Were, Produced Lots Of Feedback Ummm Aaron And Julian Were Great Too- The Drums Were The True Energy That Pushed The Show- Very Raw- Very Loud... They Really Hit Them .... I Mean Reallly Hit Them---- And Not To Sound Too Repetitive But It Was Great--- seriously , See Them If You Have The Chance...--- I guess somebody has seen them on their recent tour--- THEY BLEW ME AWAY TOO TOXIC JOHNNY -- TOTALLY :-D.
I would have to cheat a little and say the Liars...even though they contain only one Australian. They completely blew me away at ATP on saturday.- Toxic Johnny |
slugfuckers are really good, i was thinking about ripping and posting an mp3 or two
|
i'm sure australians hate any mention of Men at Work, but I've seen colin hay do his accoustic show "man at work" and it rules. really entertaining. he tells stories in between songs, some funny, some sort of bittersweet, and he played some of his own songs too that were good enough that i ended up buying his cd. it was a little distracting though because he wasn't wearing underwear and had a large package. we were only sitting a few rows away and you couldn't take your eyes off it. he probably put a potato in there or something for effect.

can any of you aussies post some radio birdman please?
|
i just want to say thanks to everybody who has mentioned bands, i've checked some of them out and i'm pleased with what i've heard. especially for the drones, grey daturas, lubricated goat, exploding white mice, scientists, whitehorse.

He is interesting, isn't he. I enjoy Men at Work, quite a bit. theres tons of good Aussie bands - alot have been mentioned. Alls I will put is: Bluebottle Kiss: They've been making great albums for over a decade now, and are extremely underrated. They've also just released another album (double album) which is great. This is really by no way an indication of the album, but the sticker on the case of the album reads: "Australia's most adventurous guitar bands evoke the spirit of Tom Waits, Neil Young, Coltrane, Sonic Youth and more..." I mean, the music is tinges of all them greats in there, but it only tinges of each. www.myspace.com/bluebottlekiss www.bluebottlekiss.com Also, another band related to Bbk, is the Devoted Few. Great band also. www.myspace.com/thedevotedfew www.thedevotedfew.com You Am I: They've just released another album titled "Convicts", and it's awesome. They have a really great back catalogue, too, which I greatly suggest checking out. www.myspace.com/youami www.youami.com.au Tim Rogers and the Temperance Union: Its The singer/guitar from You Am I's solo outfit. Really good. http://www.youami.net/timrogers/low.htm The Panics: www.thepanics.com.au If you like Metal/Hardcore: In Name and Blood Bob Evans: Acoustic, folk/pop to the likes of Elliott Smith etc. www.myspace.com/bobevans That'll do for now |

that would be really great if you could, their discography was issued in the UK in an edition of 500 I think so once I found out about them they were probably all gone. |

The only NZ stuff I have is The Mint Chicks - Octagon Octagon Octagon EP. And it is good, not too sure in which category it falls though. Math-punk?? Not that I care that much about it... Anyway, for some mp3s go to http://www.themintchicks.com/newsound.htm |

On the Silverchair thing: I don't know how anyone can say they don't push the envelope. Yeah, sure if you are still stuck in the early 90's Silverchair era. But to hear Neon Ballroom and espeically Diorama, and say they aren't unqiue, is quite ignorant. Daniel Johns is a very strong songwriter - he's a very talented guy. Respected musicians such a Van Dyke Parks has compared the man to Brian Wilson, thats a mighty comparison right there. I've heard some demo's that will be on their upcoming album, and it's really cool. To not like them because it's just not your taste of music, that's cool, but to discredit them on ability or talent is quite unwarranted.
I also think the Dissociatives are really cool, too. That's Daniel Johns' 'side project'. www.myspace.com/thedissociatives I also love alot of the bands mentioned in this thread and on this board as a whole, and I'm hardly a 'retarded office worker'. HAHA. I do admitt though, that their management and labels way of promoting the guy's is quite shit. Makes them out to be a teen/top-20 outfit, which overshadows and demeams the music. which could play a part in the 'cool to hate' thing that they have. Shame. |
Quote:
What envelope. Yes they are talented, No i don't like the music but, envelope, time signatures, tunings, having string arrangements, using electronica, what envelope are they pushing. |
They're pushing the envelope because there is no album out their that sounds anything like Diorama. It has it's own sound. Not to mention that they evolve each album and not one of their albums is similar. Even if it pushing the envelope within the confines of Silverchair. They don't stick to what they know will sell - otherwise they wouldn't have evolved from Frogstomp. This has contibuted to them not pushing no where near the amount of units that their debut album 10 years ago did.
I'm not having a go at you, as I think it's cool you admitt they are talented, it's just not your thing. Same thing goes for me when it comes to Muse, and others. |
As far as the NZ thing goes, my knowledge starts and finishes with Gate, but I'd love to hear something from Michael Morley's other bands:
Wreck Small Speakers on Expensive Stereos Tanaka-Nixon Meeting 2 Foot Flame and Dead C, of course. |

To add that NZ list:
Surface of the Earth Gordons Alastair Galbraith Does anyone know what Brother Love are like and are they any good? They were compared to Bardo Pond and Jessamine. They had a member from King Loser who had at least one good song. |
another group from australia that is good is Dworzec
|
The first and third Brother Love LPs are great, but I did not care for the second one ("My Own Worst Enemy").
Really good burnout psych-rock. The first one is called "Every Garden Grows One," the third is "Rock and Roll Criminal." This music is a little bit more rooted in certain classic rock roots than Bardo Pond, and sounds nothing at all like Jessamine to me. Every Garden has an amazing track called "Opium," which is very dusty highway drug trip sounding and still gets spun around here on a fairly regular basis after 10 years; Rock and Roll Criminal is a bit more upbeat in spots (and probably the most accessible album in general), but completely rocks. I highly recommend these two albums if you can find them. The first one was limited to 200 copies, but I have seen used copies twice, and never for more than 4 dollars; the third one was released by September Gurls and I think is on CD as well, so you might have better luck there. |

I need to get more of his records. His music is ace! |
My God, I forgot Roy Montgomery. I finally managed to get his "Scenes from the South island", and it's great. Kinda like Flying Saucer Attack.
|
I don't think I saw the Sleepy Jackson mentioned. But anyway, their debut was cool and their new material is sounding very grand.
BLUEBOTTLE KISS, guys. Come on! www.myspace.com/bluebottlekiss www.bluebottlekiss.com |
