A quick look through my old cassettes, and I still have quite a few Peel sessions that I taped at the time. Some good ones:
The Birthday Party Damned God Is My Co-pilot |
I'd love to actually hear the Peel sessions when they were originally broadcasted.
Hell, just hearing that half of these bands were on the radio gives me a boner. I mean, Lighting Bolt on BBC radio? Wow. |
I also still have some dodgy ones.
Erazerhead Vice Squad The Expelled |
It wasn't just lightening bolt though - it'd be lightening bolt, then some whistling, then some happy hardcore, then some blues etc etc. I've not really found any radio shows to replace it since, 'twas a great loss.
|
The shows on the BBC radio that try and appear alternative are funny. I tuned into BBC 6 the other day during one of their alternative shows and the first band on were Fleet Foxes...

Mogwai doing 'Helicon 1' stopped the earth. Also, Mary Anne Hobbs' DJ slot that had them playing records was priceless. |
Tim Buckley.
There are surely a few other ones but I can't remember which ones now. |

Did you ever hear the MES session? Fucking ridiculously brilliant, if only because Hobbs was bricking it, very audibly. |
Yes, I remember that. It was either just before or a few weeks later. Oh the memories of coming back home from the pub and putting the radio on...
|
Y'know, my becoming a pricky classical music sort is entirely down to the lack of John Peel on the radio? I went over to the Late Junction, and left that as my default station. Shocking.

Wow, and you all have these on tape somewhere? I missed out on a lot. I'd love to hear all of them.

lots of great ivor cutler sessions

Those Ivor Cutler sessions should be given to every human on their 11th birthday. If only so they know what 'extirpate' means.

Nico 1974 Peel Session ![]() I seem to only do requests these days, and here's another. The first Nico Peel Session was released on Strange Fruit in the late 1980's and was the first time I heard any of her solo stuff. Astonishingly dark with wheezing harmonium and elongated vowels. I probably heard the word "teutonic" for the first time when I saw it reviewed. Or maybe that was a Michael Schenker Group review in Kerrang circa 1984? Her second session was never released, so here it is. I remember reading on Henry Rollins blog that he wanted to hear a copy so I emailed him but he never replied. I guess he was probably busy lifting weights or frowning. Three of the tracks came from the 1974 album "The End" but are just performed by just Nico, none of the Eno / Cale mucking about over the top. The 9 minute version of The Doors song is a masterclass in bleakness. This is for Starman015 1. We've Got The Gold 2. Janitor Of Lunacy 3. The End 4. You Forgot To Answer Recorded 3rd December 1974 Here nice find. happy day. |

i have about 600+ peel sessions now but still no sign of Faust's session, Glice how's the tape digitising coming along?
|
It's not. I can't be fucked. Sorry.
|
I mean, I'd love to, I just don't care. And it's a long-winded process. And while a few people would appreciate it, I just don't care. I'm sure you're a nice enough chap and all, I just can't be fucked. At all.
Having said that, that's the project 'in general'. If I ever have cause to digitise bits of it, I'll let you know. |
that's ok, i know it takes up alot of time. i have lots of tapes that i need to transfer but i barely have enough time to listen to all the new music i get without spending time on old recordings. but yeah if you do digitise bits then please do let me know.

The October 19, 1988 peel session is still one of my alltime favorites.

Flying Saucer Attack - Peel Session 5th April 1996
![]() The first time I heard Flying Saucer Attack was sometime in the early nineties. It was a seven inch single called "Wish" and I think it was the second release by the Bristol noise maniacs. The first album was initially released on vinyl only and really impressed my although I remember wondering if it would appeal to anyone else. Obviously there was nothing to worry about because the record sold out in no time at all. It was re-released probably about a year later on CD bearing the slogan "compact discs are a major cause of the breakdown of society" which is a perfectly agreeable concept. I do believe that records with a lot of noise in them sound much better on vinyl. Actually just about everything sounds better on vinyl but I'm not getting into that argument again. If your new to the sound of Bristol's kings of distortion and like what you hear here the first singles compilation "Distance" is probably the best place to start. This is the second Flying Saucer Attack Peel Session. The first was recorded and broadcast in 1994 and if anyone has a copy of this recording please get in touch. Nobody's mentioned Skrewdriver yet?
(yes, they did one) |
Quote:
I bet Glice has it on tape, but he's keeping it to himself. |
Bogshed (session 4)
The Fall (session 11) Mckenzies (both sessions) Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia (both sessions) Aphex Twin (sessions one and two) |
Quote:
i've got it from 1977. if you want i'll upload it but it's only mp3. |
nah, thanks but I'm really not much in to punk rock... I was only taking an easy shot to imply that Glice was a racist.
(I know that Peel session was from before they turned into Nazis). |

I was always more of a C18 man really. Skrewdriver were a bit mainstream for my tastes. |
Appliance recorded five Peel Sessions. I always believed you could tell which bands Peel favoured the most by the number of sessions they recorded for his show.
|
Appliance! They were really nice fellas. Saw them a few times. I think the younger guitarist still plays, but I can't remember in which band. I remember enjoying them at the time, but that was a good 10 years ago.
