i've seen the talking heads, radiohead, the stones, zeppelin, etc in this thread, and...
good lord, you people have your priorities all fucked up. it doesn't have to be arty or poetic to be deliciously GOOD music. it can just be fun.

however i understand the hate for RHCP. they just suck.

RHCP seminal though? Aren't they just the most prevalent example of a very shit form of music?

Isn't the term "seminal" by itself subjective?

So bands like RHCP can fall into this list.

There's a handful of "seminal bands" that I despise. I'm just going to limit it down to five that I find absolutely no worth in. Some of the bands I was thinking about listing before I actually do like a few songs by.

yes DREAM THEATER ARE THE FUCFKING WORST!!!!! im taking a classical music appreciation class right now and theres this fat fucking slob of a kid who plays piano and wears dream theater shirts EVERYDAY! he once tried to tell me that dream theater are the most innovative band ever and without them there wouldnt be any bands that make long songs, he really said that, so i told him if he didnt shut his fucking mouth i was gonna give him the worst pink belly imaginable.

this cook i work with loves them so much. he's really into prog rock, which i am too, but when he starts talking about how punk rock would have been better if the bands had more talent, i want to tell him to shut the fuck up. i try explaining him that what makes punk so special is that anyone can do it, but he keeps talking about how music should be about only a handful of people playing amazing music and people who can't play (or i should say people who can't play yes) should just do it as a hobby.

bottomline-music is an art form, you can play guitar like a god, but if you are not an artistic/creative person, youre gonna make garbage music. i always bring up how a band like creed could play their instruments good, nuff said.

People will kill me for this, but I was never a huge fan of Black Flag. They're okay, but they never really struck me as anything special............ I've listened to everything they've done and they honestly have some really really terrible shit. They have some really exciting straight-forward punk songs with odd noisey microtonal guitar solos, but even those sometimes go on for too long. Not a bad band or anything and I don't despise them, just don't think they're as good as their reputation suggests...

yes, I also second the me no likey Black Flag, and they are definitely seminal.

i also think they have some really bad stuff and they're my second favorite band. but the great stuff is what puts them above most of the bands that are out there. like i said they're my second favorite band and i've been a huge fan for over 13 years now, so of course i'm going to be biased. i have to go to work now, but i can go on forever about black flag and how amazing they are to me.

I can see how they could connect to people, honestly, they've just been lost to me.

Another band I hate I forgot to mention earlier is Beastie Boys.

I never understood what was seminal about the Sex Pistols, amongst others.

sex pistols made all the punks following think that punk meant being hooligans with safety pins and spikey bondage gear. we still have not outgrown it. sad really.

The Sex Pistols looked great and even had a couple of songs that I enjoy blasting every now and then, but it's their seminal status as a band that I don't get. They were socially exciting etc etc for the youth of the time, but musically they weren't a patch on bands like, say, Kraftwerk, who were seriously seminal, at least musically.

Jarvis Cocker thinks Bowie completely ripped off Scott Walker. There may be some truth to it but that's a bit excessive in my opinion (I don't think their music are that similar).

He ripped off this dude.

David Bowie & Elton John. end our misery, kill them both, and throw in Billy Joel while you're at it.
