Death & the Maiden 05.03.2008 05:19 AM

EVOL and Sister only have one Lee track each, yet they're still considered to be brilliant.

mil_pl 05.03.2008 06:00 AM

i hate lee songs. so for me it would be better as on ejstans with no lee song on album. thurston is the best sy singer. dot.

Agreed, ATL is an alright album, though is massively overrated by fans.

Massively underrated rather...

Torn Curtain 05.03.2008 08:19 AM

To stick to the topic Thurston, Kim and Lee all have both great songs and poor ones. Lee is indeed the more consistent though.

How can you say that ?
I hope you're kiddin'.
As Torn said, Lee is the most consistent IMO.

It's a toss between ''Karen Revisited'' and ''Sympathy For The Strawberry''.

I don't get ''Rain On Tin'' at all, I think it's one of SY's worst songs ever.

Yes. And Kim sings the best SY songs too.

Yeah, I don't like Thurston's voice on this song. Too much high.

It totally agree, how many words of lyrics does that song actually have?

Good point about the voice. It's also the song in itself that sounds weak in a late-REM kind of way.

HECKLER SPRAY 05.03.2008 09:59 AM

Yeah, and the transitions suck.

This Is Not Here 05.03.2008 10:02 AM

i don't know what happened to thurston's voice in the early 00's, on NYC G+F (Free City Rhymes, Renegade Princess) his voice is really high aswell. Luckily it sunk down into lower frequencies for the last few albums.

It's odd because I tend to prefer Lee Ranaldo's songs but I prefer Thurston Moore's voice to Ranaldo's. One of his best vocal performances, and where his voice is really something else, has to be ''Hits Of Sunshine''.

HECKLER SPRAY 05.03.2008 10:12 AM

Yeah, it's very soft on this song, I love it too. Like on Snare, girl.

sarramkrop 05.03.2008 10:13 AM

Lee's voice is at times a little too nasal for my liking.

batreleaser 05.03.2008 11:22 AM

i like thurstons voice the best as well, lee's lyrics are better.

HECKLER SPRAY 05.03.2008 11:27 AM

Agree.

every day it's just another breath
every night another little death
do you scratch and itch when your head feels tight
or wave it away and just stay out all night?

(Saucer-like)

tasteinmen 05.03.2008 02:01 PM

I don't like in the kingdom 19

SonicBebs 05.03.2008 02:05 PM

Rather Ripped was saved by Kim songs (Reena, Jams run free, Turquoise Boy) so maybe it's Kims songs that save the day. and we've allready proved that Lee kicks all your butts, so maybe they should sack Thurston?

Everyneurotic 05.03.2008 02:07 PM

you do know they work on the songs together, it's just who writes the lyrics the one who sings the song; right?

WRONG WRONG WRONG!! OMG YOU'RE SO WRONG!
Sometimes, that's not the case. If I remember well Thurston wrote Flower.

YOU'RE SO WRONG! YOU'RE SO WRONG! OLOLOL§§§§111111111

tasteinmen 05.03.2008 03:31 PM

Didn't thurston also write the lyrics for starpower?

Not really, see EJSTNS or Murray Street. They all definitely contribute to what makes a song good, absolutely. They wouldn't be SY if they didn't.

dazedcola 05.03.2008 04:38 PM

I agree with this theory entirely and have discussed it with friends before.

The more Lee songs on a record the better it is

DDN= 3 Lee songs ! part of why its the best
Washing Machine and Sister- 2 Lee songs (yes i consider pipeline/kill time two songs)
Dirty would have been better if they included both Lee songs "genetic" and "wish fullfillment". (I cant believe they almost broke up over this !)

I really wish Lee would write more on sonic youth records. I havent heard a bad lee song yet on one. When i grab a new Sonic Youth record i can always count on at least the Lee song being good. Has Lee ever said why he doesnt have more songs on the record ? Is he just not as prolific?

samuel 05.03.2008 06:12 PM

What I feel is that the amount of time without singing is proportional to the greatness of their albums. However, the proportion has a constant near 0.00001. My rankings for the albums change constantly. For the longest time, I wasn't feeling Dirty, but as of late it's one of my favorites. Still, a long, pretttty instrumental usually catches my attention. ALSO, I'm sorry some of you don't get Rain on Tin...

I think the physical weight of the albums is proportionate to how good they are.

This Is Not Here 05.10.2008 01:37 PM

That'll be it.

Derek 05.10.2008 04:10 PM

That explains why Experimental Jetset has no liner notes or booklet.

al shabbray 05.11.2008 05:31 PM

I have to say, that the lee songs almost every time at least on of the gighlights of every album. and its definately one of the most waited for moments when they are releasing a new wreckchord

thurston writes lots of Lyrics for Kim

guitarpro 05.14.2008 01:14 PM

Lee does have a lot of stand out tracks and for only havin 1/2 songs per album he really makes his shots count.

Rock on Lee
