Meat Puppets were a band obviously influenced by their use of drugs, without their music sounding too "druggy".

Toilet & Bowels 06.11.2008 08:28 AM

since when were harry pussy a drug band?

PAULYBEE2656 06.11.2008 08:30 AM

codeine
morphine
heroin
immodium
ecstacy of st theresa
acid mothers temple
skunk anansie

im not being serious if you havent guessed

greatest drug songs is a bit easier

let it flow / lay back in the sun- spiritualized
interstellar overdrive- pink floyd
cocaine in my brain- dillinger
heroin- velvets
white lines- funkadelic (shit, i think!!!)
my friend jack- the smoke
pass the dutchie- musical youth
plantman- gary young

sarramkrop 06.11.2008 08:31 AM

If you're a very sharp listener, it isn't too difficult to hear the sort of drugs that someone is taking just by the way their songs sound.

Mighty Diamonds' Pass The Kouchie was about drugs. Musical Youth's version changed it to Dutchie to remove the drug references.

while i agree with that statement, id also think that someone would have to have interest/knowledge and/or experience with the drugs to know what drugs inspired a song, no matter how sharp a listener they are.

but i know what you mean, songs with mega polished production are usually powered by the rampant perfectionism that only cocaine can provide one with, like fleetwood mac's 'rumours'. songs with close to no production and tons of dissonance and atonality can be accosicated with opiates, i.e., royal trux. is that what you mean at least?

i don't know. i've never seen anyone use a candle. it seems pretty archaic for some reason.

sarramkrop 06.11.2008 08:44 AM

I was generalising, by the way. George Michael's songs make you want to take drugs unaware that he does take some himself.

Cantankerous 06.11.2008 08:44 AM

i think he fell asleep driving and was arrested not too long ago.

I love that song but I never picked up on the drug references in it. I'll listen to it again.

Everyneurotic 06.11.2008 10:17 AM

someone said acid mothers temple or boredoms? because (allegedly) they don't do drugs.

you can make the case that amt qualify just because their music is very trippy.

anyway, firsts to come to my mind:

bardo pond
galaxie 500
spacemen 3
eyehategod

i love druggy music. i don't remember who said it, one of those san haight-ashbury bands back in the day, about psychedelic music, that it was music that made you feel different, not unlike a drug, but without the drugs. i like that.

those eyes remind me someone...

batreleaser 06.11.2008 10:20 AM

the dudes from boredom dont smoke pot, or opium or anything? for some reason i always imagined vision creation newsun being recorded in an opuim den with the wholke band sharing pipes of opium and hasish, weird i know.

and yes, drugg/psychedelic music is cool, i love the idea of music being able to alter one's mind as a drug would.

he used to be heavily into coke and stuff in the 80s, whether you believe it or not, although probably not enough to label him a junkie

Cantankerous 06.11.2008 10:42 AM

yeah i know about the coke. a junkie is a heroin addict

Everyneurotic 06.11.2008 10:50 AM

yamatsuka has gone on record, saying they don't really do drugs...i think they fired chew hasegawa (later of corrupted) because he was doing shit and they caught him or something...don't know what he was doing (probably smack, considering he went on to corrupted...pot at the very least).

same with captain beefheart, clean as a whistle.

Rob Instigator 06.11.2008 10:51 AM

Butthole Surfers People!!!!

the druggiest band around! Hell, many of their songs make me feel like I am tripping balls again!
esepcially when the cows start in and the bowling sounds on Jimi

the first song on Hairway To Steven

Cantankerous 06.11.2008 10:53 AM

i already said butthole surfers

the flaming lips don't do drugs either. wayne hasn't done drugs in like 20 years. i saw a documentary about them and the drummer was a smackhead but not anymore.

that's a fucking lie. roger waters smoked pot every day in order to stop smoking cigarettes. and you can tell. he is clearly blazed out of his mind on live at pompeii.

not to mention they fired the keyboard player because he was a cokehead.

sarramkrop 06.11.2008 11:00 AM

Pornography is a record heavily influenced by drugs and alcohol, some of the songs even stemming from problems related to those two. The Cure aren't really what I'd call a drug band, though.

That song is directly autobiographical. Sly wrote it about his own problems with heroin and scoring it.

This makes more sense to me. Like Psychocandy or even Soft Cell's Non Stop Erotic Cabaret, it just seemed steeped in a kind of druggy atmosphere. It's too easy just listing bands that take a shit load of drugs. I actually think some of U2's War album has a really smacky feel to it, and they weren't exactly Primal Scream when it came to the ol' golden brown.
