Nice thread. Here be mine:
The Birthday Party - "Junkyard" Skullflower - "Third Gatekeeper" Loop - "A Gilded Eternity" The Ex - "Aural Guerilla" Swans - "Cop" Big Black - "Atomizer" Jimi Hendrix Experience - "The Cry Of Love" Terminal Cheesecake - "Angels In Pigtails" Siouxsie And The Banshees - "The Scream" Amon Duul II - "Yeti" |
lets rename this thread the best albums ever......
rock is such a broad open bracketed sort of thing... minutemen, hendrix, the fall, wire, the ex, loop, not exactly "rawk" in the spinal tap sense now is it? |
I tells ya, if demonrail were here and saw my selection, he'd have such a fit - mainly for not including the New York Dolls or Avril "I Am More Rock Than You" Lavigne.
|
gmku's next 10
New York Dolls (s/t) Stooges - Fun House Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers Spacemen 3 - Perfect Prescription Captain Beefheart - Safe as Milk The Feelies - Crazy Rhythm Television - Marquee Moon Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks... Brian Jonestown Massacre - Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request The Dwarves - Blood, Guts & Pussy |
^^^ Crazy Rhythm! Not much you hear mentioned a huge amount these days:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIy8nf07UZ4 |
So good. I searched for that one for years and years and then one day this past fall I happen to walk into the store and there it is in the new arrivals part of the used LPs bin. And for only 6 bucks! A practically perfect copy too!
They sure looked nerdy on stage, though, didn't they. |
Next up somewhere would be:
MBV - Loveless The Who - My Generation VU - Unripened MBV - Isn't Anything Sonic Youth - Dirty Battles - Mirrored and bunches more, too much to go on like this... |
I love the Feelies btw. All their stuff.
|
I think the Feelies' ultra nerdiness is certainly part of their charm. I'd certainly would have hung out with them rather than Minor Threat, that's for sure.
|
Definitely. They're much more fun.
& the 80s feelies only look nerdy in retrospect. Back in the day they seemed, at least to me, more college-preppy than anything. Like early Talking Heads. |
I'm thinking of so much more that should belong in my top 30 or so albums. Fugazi's Repeater, Nirvana's Bleach, some Dinosaur LPs, Meat Puppets, Dylan. It all deserves to be up there.
|
I like Time For A Witness a lot , by the Feelies, but Crazy Rythms , not a bit.
|

I found an urge overkill album on vinyl at salvation army for 3 bucks in good condition. Don't remember what it's called but it has the 3 of them on the cover. It sucks bad. I have heard some songs by them before that are good though.

Is that the one with "Flowers Must Die" on it? Very god choice. I love the first Ash Ra Tempel LP as well. Whilst I'm on the Krautrock tip, have you heard the first two Amon Duul II albums? Both "Phallus Dei" and "Yeti" are wel worth getting hold of, if you're into your Kraut-Space Rock. |
Geeze this will be hard. However, favourite rock albums:
1. Guided by Voices - Bee Thousand 2. Pavement - Wowee Zowee 3. Weezer - Blue Album 4. Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me 5. Sonic Youth - Sister 6. Pixies - Doolittle 7. Built to Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love 8. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless 9. Pixies - Surfer Rosa 10. The Cure - Seventeen Seconds My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything Ride - Nowhere The Smiths - Meat is Murder The Clash - London Calling Public Image Ltd - First Edition Fimbulwinter - Servants of Sorcery The Scientists - Blood Red River Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising The Aints - Ascension |
In no particular order. I left out a bunch that I wasn't sure would be "rock" enough.
Alice in Chains – Dirt Queen Adreena – Drink Me David Bowie – Aladdin Sane Deftones – White Pony Dir en grey – Macabre The Beatles - Revolver Jeff Buckley – Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk Primus – Frizzle Fry Sonic Youth – EJTNS Wilco – A Ghost is Born |
Phew, I'm not the only one here who like Primus!
|
Larry Lalonde is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He's like the Charlie Parker of guitar--coherently weaves in and out of key and hits every note he needs to along the way. It's dizzying. Way underrated.
|
Fuck, they're all good musicians. Larry is very underrated in particular though.
|
Yeah, Les and Brain (or whoever they have on drums) are usually pretty admired, but I think Larry is the most talented musician in the band. Les and Brain are technically gifted, but I think Larry is about 75% of the creative force. Solo Les sounds "talented" and carries the humor of Primus, but it's not very interesting.
I mean listen at 2:10 on Mr. Knowitall. I wait the whole song just to hear it every time. |
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Killing Joke - Killing Joke Sonic Youth - EVOL Pixies - Dolittle Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power Metallica - And Justice For All Loop - Heavens End Big Black - Atomizer The Damned - Damned Damned Damned |

i should have included that in my list |

AND THE FLOOOOOOOWERS MUST DIE the first song is the best... light: look at your sun oh i forgot david bowie - aladdin sane " - ziggy stardust |
Primus may be the best show I've ever seen. Saw them stoned in a highschool basketball gym in Burlington Vermont. Les had goat horns and there were people diving into the crowd from the basketball hoops. It reminded me of the video for Smells like Teen Spirit.
Punchbowl is without a doubt my favorite Primus album, with pork soda and seas of cheese close behind. Excellent band. No melody, but amazing. Another band that is great is Meat Puppets. They made what could be the best album ever if you ask me |
Amon Duul II is pretty cool. I love the song " I want the sun to shine ". That has to be one of the best musical recordings I've ever heard
|

That's a really great way to sum up Primus. |
