how about some good old fashoined claude debussy?

Quote:
good call man. i did a thesis on the impressionists this year for my history of composed music class this year. i really got into debussy's stuff. 'preludes' is one of the most minimally beautiful pieces ever composed. |

Terry Riley's "Persian Surgery Dervishes" is pretty far out, man. Lots of people like that......but not me, I'm afraid (too much hippy noodling for my liking). Still, if you've not heard it, it's still worth checking out.

If we're talking Riley then his 1971 album with John Cale, "Church Of Anthrax", is absolutely incredible. I mean really, like one of my favourites. It runs the gamut from cyclical organ and piano jams to beautiful floating multi-tracked soprano sax improvisations and a lot in between, but it’s actually all surprisingly accessible. Pretty damn dreamy in places too, so even if it’s not quite in the whole shoegazey/guitar vein of a lot of the other recommendations in this list, I heartily suggest that you make sure to put that on your list Derek. And anyone else really. It’s awesome. |

I really need to check out Pocahaunted. If it's as good as, say, Grouper, it's gonna be a win. Any particular album recommendations?
|
it's cute definitely!

I forgot I made this thread.
Anyway, I've been listening to A LOT of lovesliescrushing and I must say that they're on my way to becoming one of my favourite bands. Their music draws me in and puts me in a daze in such an unexplainable way. My favourite album so far has been Bloweyelashwish though the other ones I've heard have been superb. It's really weird to think that the way this guy makes this music is so simple (he records this stuff on a 4 TRACK TAPE RECORDER) but yet it sounds so full and rich in sound. Perfect band. And I've yet to check out Tim Hecker which I'm going to do soon. |
My recommendation - Hammock - Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow.
|
a pretty good shoegaze band is Lush.
|
Yeah, Derek.
Check out that Emeralds band when you get a chance maybe. They've got a lot of dreamy drone shit. I dunno. |
Labradford
and Rafael Toral's "Sound mind sound body" Bark Psychosis |
I'd like to start a band called something like Dickfaced Dildo Dudes or something and have all the album titles be like "sticking your dick up a fucking cunty std asshole faggot bitch" and such. Just really ridiculously stupid.
And then when people actually listen to the record, it's the softest, gentlest, most beautiful ambient music ever. |
Haha!
The name Emeralds rings a bell. |
oh yeah derek.
gets aidan baker - orange That's probably my all time favorite drone record. Shame it's so short. |
Aidan Baker of Nadja fame? Fuck yes!
|
oh man, i happen on this thread while listening to Emeralds' "What Happened" for the first time. this is really good
|
haha.

I may like it better than Solar Bridge

There's a lot of folks doing some very enjoyable stuff in the ambient guitar field right now. There's a few folks getting a second (or more) mention among these:
Aidan Baker (http://www.myspace.com/aidanbakermusic) Seconds In Formaldehyde (http://www.myspace.com/secondsinformaldehyde) Rameses III (http://www.myspace.com/ramesesiii) Gareth Hardwick (http://www.myspace.com/garethhardwick) Ben Nash (http://www.myspace.com/bennash1) Peter Wright (http://www.myspace.com/distantbombs) Hakobune (www.myspace.com/hakobunemusic) Taiga Remains (doesn't have his own myspace, but puts some stuff on www.myspace.com/studentsofdecay) Area C (www.myspace.com/areac) and I can't believe that I missed my current favourite: Marble Sky (sorry, no myspace, but there is a track on www.myspace.com/studentsofdecay) |
Weird, I was just looking to see if we had an Aidan Baker thread because I wanted to mention that his new collab with thisquietarmy (whose ep "Orange" blew me away) is coming out very soon. You know, the first new Aidan Baker release in a week. But he's done a lot of good stuff. I'm not a Nadja fan really, but Aidan is great.
|
Have you done any ambient kinda stuff, atsonicpark? Preferably not the dark variety.
|
Quote:
you are so right on this one. I think we've talked about this before, but "Orange" might as well be my ever favourite ambient/drone record. And I've heard a few, already. |
