i have never given them hero status. I think they are a decent enough band to be considered a "good" band that is worth listening to. And I agree, Argument is better. Instrument was my introduction, and I recommend Instrument to anyone who has never listened to Fugazi before. I remember hearing that they have only played a few shows at the $5 price...unwillingly. Most of their shows were said to be free-$3. I have no credible sources to back that up though. I read that in a magazine during my 9th grade year. I smoked a lot of regs back then. My memory could be wrong. |
Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, REM.........
|
good question.
Obviously the Rolling Stones , but i don't feel weird, i'd say i feel GOOD about ignoring them. however apart from Cotrane, Miles or the Duke, i never seem to be able to dig jazz too much, especially contemporary acts... Also stuff like Black Sabbath, Led Zep, don't really appeal to me. good question again. edit : the Fall, The Smiths, Wire, Black Blag |
Led Zep and The Smiths (love some of their singles but I can't imagine liking their albums). Gang Of Four too, considering I live in Leeds, but I don't like the sound of them (punk-funk, 'radical' lyrics).

I think a large part of whether one "gets into" a band or doesn't (not necessarily meaning dislikes, just doesn't get around to them), is a matter of "being there."
The reason I like many of the bands I do is that I was keenly aware of their presence on the scene as it were when they were in making music, in their heyday. Going back and seeing if you can pick up on a band is much more difficult. They tend not to resonate as much if you come to them fresh 20 years after they've produced their stuff. I think that's why I'm lukewarm about the Smiths. Maybe if I'd paid more attention to them in the 80s, I'd feel differently about them. |
it is true gmku
it is hard to get into certain acts unless you are younger also |
INSTRUMENT is the only Fugazi album I have. I like it, but feel content to not seek out anything else at this point in time.
|
repeater and 13 songs are essential if you love fucking fierce guitar ROCK

You know, Led Zeppelin aren't often liked just for their singles. Especially in this country, considering they er... didn't release any. They're the textbook definition of album rock. |
Never got into Scissor Shock.

Same here. I love that album, but I've never really gotten into their other stuff. I don't mean that as in I don't like their other stuff, I just haven't gotten into it; I haven't really looked into their other stuff. |
Exactly how I feel. I respect them and all. But I don't know. I feel like if I bought other albums by them, I'd still only listen to INSTRUMENT when I was in the mood for them. If that makes sense.

"Instrument" is not even a "real" Fugazi album though.
|
so?
|
you said it!
|
out of the ashtray
into the ASHTRAY! |
I'm saying, how can you judge a band based on a cd of demos and outtakes? That really is the absolute worst album you can possibly say, "I don't feel like I need to hear anything else by them" about. Yes, you have the right to say whatever you want -- I just find it odd. It's like judging Sonic Youth solely off of Silver Sessions or something.

we're all ...GUILTY!!!!
|
You'd make a great cop.
|
being a cop wold be great
I would detain weed dealers, give them a harsh talking to, confiscate their weed, then let them go witha warning and smoke till the coes come home. they all do it. |

I see what yr saying, but on a personal level have to say it doesnt really work that way with me. Often times I like those sorts of collections more than a bands' "regular albums". Like say ELECTRORETARD by the Melvins, or f'ing INCESTICIDE for instance. In a way b-sides collections work as a better greatest hits... because they tend to show of the extreme tangents bands might venture into. |

god get them.... awesome band.... |
And if I'm being totally honest, my favorite track on INSTRUMENT is "I'm So Tired," and nothing on their studio albums sounds like that song. Right?
|
i never got the whole fugazi thing at all.. they are ok but no more..
same with the meat puppets and melvins..... |
I don't feel weird about not having listened to something...if I really want to try and get into it, I'll eventually get round to it.
as for bands/artists don't "get" the reverence for...hmmm. Devo Elliott Smith Ween Deerhunter Clinic I have respect for all those bands, they just do nothing whatsoever to impress me with their music. |
Agree with all those bands except for Devo.
|
Oh Ween. Haven't heard them once in my life. My friend even gave me this huge rant on why I need to put down the CDs I'm about to buy and get something by them. I picked up a CD, said okay I'll buy this, and then put it down when he wasn't looking.
|
Sebadoh = hit or miss
Devo = ridiculously awesome Elliott Smith = very good singer/songwriter (but there's others) Ween = funny/interesting at first, but lost my interest 2 or 3 albums ago. Deerhunter = awesome Clinic = terrible |
I got a Ween cd once I found on the side in a parking lot. It's the one where the cd is all white. It's terrible. Everything I've heard by them sucks except a few songs on the Mollusk.
I found a burnt cd at the some time that had a big skull drawn on it and it said "rawr!!!!!!!!!!" It was misfits - static age. Sweet. |
captain beefhart
the clash fugazi radiohead |
I only have SAFE AS MILK by Beefheart. And really, I've never payed a lot of attiontion to it whilst listening. I mean. I know "Electricity?"
|
To paraphrase John Peel, Captain Beefheart is probably the only musician to deservedly be called a genius.
Easily my most-listened to artist of all time; I pull out one of his albums once a week. Safe as Milk doesn't even begin to help you understand Beefheart. Get lick my decals off baby. |
^ its not that i dont like him, i've never listened to him
|
|
I know Buzzo. I was just giving my reccomendation.. and replying to noiseredux.
|
Thanks atsonic (& howd you know the redux slang?).
And yeah, really same as buzzo... just never listened to him much. Sometimes I have to "be in the mood" to actually open up and discover some new body of work (like my recent delving into FZ). Just haven't itched for Beefheart enough yet. |
