I'm sorry/glad to inform you that it's the highlight of all my sonic youth live experiences (goodbye 20th century tour).
I can't even express how I felt after hearing that live...

btw, when I think about this album I "feel" a sense of spaciousness () and fullfilling emptiness (:eek:)

Wait, people actually like 'Lightnin'? I haven't listened to this album in a long time.

joe11121 05.19.2009 03:39 PM

I like the music in Lightnin' but I think the vocals ruin it. It should have been an instrumental track

amerikangod 05.19.2009 03:45 PM

'StreamXsonik Subway' is one of those songs that is permanently linked to a memory for me, so much so that it's impossible to separate the two. And it's not a meaningful link, just one of those 'I happened to be listening to this song as I was performing this activity, and now the two are fused' scenarios.

In any case it's not a bad memory. It's just a random one. I was playing a lot of Mario 64 while listening to the album shortly after it came out. 'StreamXsonik Subway' just happened to come on while I was in the 'Lethal Lava Land' level where you're inside of the volcano making your way to the top, jumping from pole to pole way above the flaming base. It's those aerial pole jumps that are linked to the song the most, and vice versa.

brb starting a thread for this

SonicBebs 05.19.2009 03:53 PM

i think the whole album would be amazing instrumental

i love it like it is but i think it would be more powerful with just the music

jon boy 05.19.2009 03:58 PM

this is my joint favourite record. its atmospheric, more inventive and after the guitar theft shows that they can continue in more interesting wats. having said that pretty much every record after bar parts of murray street sucks.

al shabbray 05.19.2009 04:04 PM

for me the devil is in the details.
its like every sound there is wanted, melting that thing into just one great experience. its like on every orourke produced SY album, I dig what he did with the sound of them.
alone the opener track is just beautiful.

sarramkrop 05.19.2009 04:11 PM

My favourite tracks on it are 'Renegade Princess' and 'Small Flowers Crack Concrete'.

I was just being silly.

Fuckin, Lightnin should have started the record. I love the way Thurston "sings" Small Flowers Crack Concrete. It's a very moving performance.

[Sandbag] 05.19.2009 09:36 PM

because it's like a book of poems with music

Agreed, aside from Lee's songs and nevermind.

bloodcrystallisetosand 05.21.2009 05:46 AM

i thought that it was the LEAST regarded album - it's the one that had that lass writing the review calling for them to split up out of fear that they'd sink to even more dispicable depths. that, coupled with similar if slightly less extreme reviews i'd read, and that the only song i'd heard on it, nevermind, had the worst lyrics i've ever come across (within music that i've actually chosen to listen to, rather than just being on the telly/radio/etc), meant that i gave it a seriously wide berth until the last couple of months...

i've discovered that it's pretty good, but i don't get the mindblowingness that the rest of the board seems to get. i think that it fits really nicely into the discography as an intermediary between atl and murray street, but it seems to be the least structured of the records and i personally see it as more syr than sy regular, too free and loose.

also i bet it pissed geffen right off when it got dropped to them to try and promote - wierdest record ever put out by a major label?

Probably a butthole surfers record or boredoms - pop tatari or white noise - an electrical storm or "Trout Mask Replica" or "Disco Volante" or....... well, there's been all kinds of weird albums put out by major labels over the years.

Definitely the weirdest one in more recent years though.

atsonicpark 05.21.2009 05:52 AM

I really like your username, btw, bloodcrystalizedtosand.

bloodcrystallisetosand 05.21.2009 06:48 AM

cheers man :) i'd forgotten about that white noise lp, it's awesome, side 2 is sheer terror. you'd never guess it was a mild-mannered middle class english woman doing the proto-tago-mago-stockhausen tape manipulation freakout shit wouldja?

couldnt agree more...
its like the perfect example for books who sound like what they are about. again: stunning piece of art.

and somehow I think it sounds like it looks: white, bright, sunny and at the same time dark.

check my post in a previous page, do the "images" I describe work for you?

I totally feel what you are meaning with this picture, buuut the picture itself does look a little bit too...warm?!
the white picture with the bitmapped/pixelated face I so much adore from you, looks like NYG&F sounds!!!!!

its a mixture of these kind of pics with a lot of plain white and pictures of the sky/clouds where the sunlight is breaking through. I agree with you description!
I hope you get what I am trying to say

I don't know. I think Mr. Bungle's self-titled has NYCG&F beat on that level.

YES!
I wanted a more "algid" one but couldn't find it. less saturated colours and a kinda less "busy" image would have worked better.
let's do our secret handshake to celebrate our common imagery semantics!

Ha, I was just about to post about this being my favorite album at the moment.

Free City Rhymes is the only song that I could do without. I don't dislike it; I'm just not usually feeling it.

I hate to be redundant, but the title track is the best. The freakin' climax almost makes me climax, if you catch my drift. And I think you do.

that record is a masterpiece.

MARKJONES 05.28.2009 03:26 PM

NYC Ghosts & Flowers are for those who just want to listen to something refreshing and different.

And that's exactly why this album rocks.

cagedbird 06.15.2009 01:31 PM

i like the argument that NYCG&F is a nice transition from ATL to Murray Street. We should all pause and think about presence, place and poetry. Wherever we are.

Hmm, weird.. The site works for me.

chicka 01.16.2010 11:23 AM

Just tried the site it said "file not found". What a shame as I am one of those who loves this album. Right from the get go. The last few minutes of the title song are the best interwoven guitar riffs the two of them have ever produced imo.

chicka 01.16.2010 11:36 AM

I found the seattle show of NYC Ghosts and Flowers at this location and it seems I'm downloading the files as flac files
