Not a bad performance - and it looks like they ran over a bit anyways... so it's probably best they did a short one...

Would definitely have preferred Anti-Orgasm, but what can ya do?

eternal 06.10.2009 11:41 PM

solid performance, although i was hoping for any other song. the chick before them was insane, like dave said about 4 words the whole interview.

only thing that pissed me off is how dave got his copy before i did and ordered the fucking thing almost 3 months ago!

Alexander 06.10.2009 11:43 PM

They've been on the show countless times and Letterman still had no clue as to who they were lol. Overall, a strong performance!

negative8ball 06.10.2009 11:43 PM

But Dave having a copy means the world gets to see it... kinda important [smirk]

Hey - maybe it was empty...

HomelessArtist 06.10.2009 11:45 PM

Letterman has the vinyl and I don't!? I KNOW he didn't pre-order!

Anyway. Kims dress was beautiful.

A longer song would have been cool since Sacred Trickster is such the radio hit.

Hey, cool anyway. I hope my record is in the mail box tomorrow.

Oh dear, that *was* a little random. I'm not very good at explaining things. Plus, I mixed up my song/mental images. The full moons over water was something that popped in my head during Leaky Lifeboat; husband and wife singing (?) together, most of all having fun and doing what they love. And their faces were shining and detached in the sky over a lake. The Poison Arrow thing was more like that Dee-Lite video with the various head cut-outs moving around (though I stand by my whack-a-mole reference (didn't anyone ever go to chuck-e-cheese?))

No, he knows. I think he really likes them, but feels awkward around them so he acts congenial and polite. I'd probably do the same with my awkward self.

automatic bzooty 06.10.2009 11:59 PM

yeah, he just doesn't really get to sit around and shoot the shit with 'em, like his other guests... i dunno, maybe it's more of a "professional" relationship? like the fall and john peel.

vacuum noise 06.11.2009 02:09 AM

i kinda like how short that song is...

Jeremy 06.11.2009 02:49 AM

Thurston rocked the song (Was he playing his prototype Jazzmaster? Looked like it....), and it was cool to see Mark with them on the show, but it was a weird song for them to play. It doesn't sum them up as a band at all, it kinda seems like more of an idea of a song than a complete song.

I'm just bitter because with all of the good material on the record, and they play maybe the worst track on the album.

jetengine 06.11.2009 06:41 AM

Overall, a good funny episode of Letterman. I liked the way he came across as a sort of pseudo sexual conservative when explaining his previous jokes about the sexual proclivities of Sarah Palin's daughter--all the while retelling the jokes to the amusement of everyone. Also, the chainsaw imitation fit in nicely on a Sonic Youth night. Good performance, with fancy footwork courtesy of ol' Thursty.

mil_pl 06.11.2009 06:43 AM

am I the only one who is not thinking "wow" after last tv shows...
?

baby bulldog 06.11.2009 07:56 AM

They were great.Worth staying up for it.

o'connor 06.11.2009 08:40 AM

i wasn't a big fan of sacred trickster, but i really enjoyed watching em play it live. fucking a.

alex_could 06.11.2009 10:09 AM

sounds nurse'y, better than on the album. and kim sings good, remember how awful she sang 'reena' last time there (couldn't hear herself, i know).

i wish i could be as awesome as any of the sonics at any point in their lives, to be honest. i mean, i'd even settle for HALF as awesome, damn.

Hey, sorry for the delay. Fed-Ex ground really really screwed us up. I don't know your deal, but is Paul's not an option. We tried really hard to make sure that physical retail was a big part of this BEGN and Paul's is one of the best stores for new music buying anywhere in the country and like all independent stores it needs all the support that it can get.

l'voyeur 06.11.2009 11:18 AM

every sacred trickster live performance (including this one in Dave's show) appears (to me) better than the official studio version... I dunno why...same goes with other eternal's tracks...call me crazy...

I preordered direct from Matador. I got an email saying it shipped last Wednesday.

I would have gone through Paul's if I lived downtown. I've bought there before, and it is a good store! But I didn't want to make sure I had to be downtown to get the album.

i feel the same way. i think it's just the energy they project on stage that intensifies the song. the letterman performance is a good example. i was surprised by it. it was like the daydream nation era all over again.. sort of. the new album sounds lethargic at some points, i think

nancykitten 06.11.2009 12:20 PM

Why no Anti-Orgasm? It's the catchiest thing on the record. Surely it would translate to a mainstream audience far better.

Paul's does rule.......

loubarret 06.11.2009 12:51 PM

I liked the jools one better.

Keeping It Simple 06.11.2009 12:58 PM

Kim Gordon has great legs.

loubarret 06.11.2009 01:02 PM

She still has.

She aged pretty well.

Keeping It Simple 06.11.2009 01:08 PM

I think the main reason I like Sonic Youth is Kim Gordon. The band's songs I like the most are the ones she sings.

Keeping It Simple 06.11.2009 01:12 PM

I can't believe one of the users of this board lives in St.Petersburg, Russia. It's the most beautiful city ever built.

you know...all the SY performances in Letterman were good...except when they played incinerate years ago...was veeeeeery boring...

anti-orgasm is just an OK song (sorry for the anti-orgasm fans here)
and is like 6 min (not tv talk-show friendly)...I think SY made a good choice...sacred trickster have just 2 minutes and a catchiest riff...

joe11121 06.11.2009 03:26 PM

I knew they would play Sacred Trickster.
Music was superb. Kim's vocals started out a little off, then she got into it and they sounded great!

EVOLghost 06.11.2009 11:31 PM

Kim was hot.

vacuum noise 06.12.2009 12:46 AM

just finished listening to my firends vynyl copy of eternal, and I have to say Im very impressed; the album is very interesting....there is alot of depth to these songs and the album is very dense, with alot to groove on. 100x better than RR... I was joking that Rather Ripped was the bands "hack" album, a desperate attempt to sell albums? and lots of "bad" tones, almost like they were trying to make a more "rock" mainstream album (of course it still is kinda interesting, but RR is very one dimensional (not monotonous!))

andrei 06.12.2009 01:17 AM

As promised. here it is:
Sonic Youth - 2009-06-10 New York, NY - Sacred Trickster - HD Transport Stream

Don't forget to thank the guy if you get this! Remember that he is not a SY and did this just for us!
