I just got the strangest piece of spam email. You know how lately they've been using subject lines that have nothing to do with Viagra or Dick Lengtheners so you'll open it expecting a note from a friend? Well, I just got one with the subject line, "If you want your name spelt wrong, die." Now what kind of impetus does that give me to open the email!? And what is it even supposed to mean?

Anyway...

I don't really... I love all those albums and they evoke a great atmosphere, but NYC Ghosts and Flowers offers something different like the rest of SY's stuff.

You need to stop worrying about what other people like.

Genteel Death 07.27.2010 04:26 PM

I find it more shocking when someone is shocked by another person's choices when it comes to choose a bunch of records that resonate with them. Or, say, the unhealthy fascination that this forum has with the 90s, particularly the first part of that decade. And They Might Be Giants. Still, to each their own.

Rob Instigator 07.27.2010 04:31 PM

so what is more pedantic and inane? someone commenting on a choice, or someone commenting on the commenting?

automatic bzooty 07.27.2010 04:37 PM

is it bad that i find it nearly impossible to make a definitive top ten list? esp. only using one album per artist? fuuuuck.

Torn Curtain 07.27.2010 04:49 PM

Sonic Youth - Daydream nation
The Cure - Disintegration
Nick Drake - Five leaves left
Tim Buckley - Dream letter live in London 1968
Jeff Buckley - Grace

Radiohead - OK Computer
Television - Marquee moon
Neil Young - Tonight's the night
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson

(list initially posted there : http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/showthread.php?t=3288 )

Rob, if by commenting you mean discussing, and perhaps find out that you perceive a certain record differently from another person, rather than adopting a music snob attitude, I think you should be able to work out the answer yourself.

some fucking masterpieces of contemporary skronk rock, and it just strikes me as weird that NYCG&F would be more of a fave to any sonic youth fanatic than those previously mentioned.

I also put NYCG&F higher than all those you listed. Daydream is one of my least favorites. It probably has a lot to do with when you were introduced to their music, and through which records. The first cut is the deepest etc etc.

Pax Americana 07.27.2010 08:32 PM

Man, it's really hard to narrow it down to just 10! Eh, here goes...

10. Bad Religion - Against the Grain
9. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
8. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
7. Minor Threat - Out of Step
6. Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters
5. Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand
4. Shellac - At Action Park
3. Mission of Burma - Vs
2. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
1. Fugazi - Red Medicine

atsonicpark 07.27.2010 08:54 PM

AGAINST THE GRAIN! THAT'S WHERE I'LL STAY! SWIMMING UPSTREAM -- I MAINTAIN AGAINST THE GRAIN!

Vs, Plastic Surgery Disasters, Red Medicine, Action Park, Surfer Rosa, Out of Step... damn dude, this is taking me back to high school.

Have seen so many great lists on this thread, albums I've loved but haven't listened to in years. Great work everyone. I hope this thread can inspire people to finally getting around to checking out some of these albums. For example, I'm downloading that Prurient album mentioned earlier in the thread now.

I love that dead c album, it took me forever to get into it, but once it hit -- it hit hard. I'd rate all those gate albums up there as some of my absolute favs.

Who/what is Windy and Carl? I always hear them (?) mentioned but I have no idea what it is.

Pax Americana 07.27.2010 09:09 PM

[quote=atsonicpark]AGAINST THE GRAIN! THAT'S WHERE I'LL STAY! SWIMMING UPSTREAM -- I MAINTAIN AGAINST THE GRAIN![quote]

Yeah! I had forgotten just how much I love Bad Religion, then I sort of randomly put that album on the other day and it damn near made me cry. That's like my favorite punk rock, just-be-yourself anthem. It's like this total statement of purpose that so appealed to me when I first got into that band years ago.

atsonicpark 07.27.2010 09:21 PM

yeah really everything from recipe for heart working backwards is incredible.

Inhuman 07.27.2010 10:31 PM

Currently:
VU - VU & Nico
Beatles - Abbey Road
SY - DDN
Gang Gang Dance - God's Money
Refused - Shape of Punk to Come
Sunburned Hand of the Man - Headdress
Tomutonttu - S/T
Kraftwerk - The Man Machine
Sunn0))) - Black One
DJ Screw - 11-16-00

Death & the Maiden 07.27.2010 11:01 PM

La Dusseldorf - Viva
Shizuka - Live/Traditional Aesthetics
Einsturzende Neubauten - Haus der Luge
Rowland S. Howard - Teenage Snuff Film
Malice Mizer - Memoire DX
Boris - Feedbacker
The Verlaines - Hallelujah All the Way Home
These Immortal Souls - Get Lost (Don't Lie!)
Laughing Clowns - Ghosts of an Ideal Wife
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

I couldn't find a place for the Birthday Party though (and I usually say they're my favourite band). Megadeth (Killing is my Business), White Heaven (Out), Neu! (Neu!75), Kousokuya (1st), Television (The Blow Up) and Sonic Youth (BMR/DDN) also just missed out.

ann ashtray 07.28.2010 12:17 AM

If I absolutely had to pick ten:

1. SY - A Thousand Leaves
2. Stooges - Fun House
3. Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
4. Nico - The End
5. Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
6. Ghoul Detail - Strung out in Skogar
7. Scratch Acid - The Greatest Gift
8. Melvins - Houdini
9. Earth - Pentestar
10. Soundgarden - Superunknown

4-10 always subject to change.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 07.28.2010 12:59 AM

fuck it, I'm not even trying. I love so much music it's hard to name just 10 albums. And I don't like nearly as much music as some of you guys.

Really great list... I was desperate to get some Dead C and Harry Pussy in my top 10 but there was no room...

Jeremy 07.28.2010 01:21 AM

Yeah, I think everybody's list is on reserve to change at any notice.

I know what albums would probably be top ten, but determining an exact order is the tricky part.

droney space rock from michigan, they've been around since the early 90s and have put records out on kranky. kind of like the more spaced out mbv tracks crossed with stars of the lid. introspection, drawing of sound, conciousness, & depths are their best records.
