word on the street is this suxxxxxxxxxx.

i wonder if i'll bother with it. i probably will since i have with all their other albums anyway. =\

loubarret 01.03.2011 06:33 AM

Are they still sucking in the fashion they did since mr beast? I will pass then

greedrex 01.03.2011 02:08 PM

oooch
I corroborate. This one sucks big time. It's terrible me thinks... More vocoder, ugly arangements.
I have all their stuff including all the eps up until Mr Beast. Found Hawk boring but this one...
Artwork is really nice though.

narlus 01.03.2011 02:52 PM

i like it. different direction for the band, too.

hevusa 01.03.2011 03:23 PM

I've only heard one single but it sounded very different from previous things. I liked it a lot.

nicfit 01.03.2011 03:43 PM

I will have to listen properly (earphones and such), but at first "hearing" (?) seems like what I expected: something that has loads of subtle stuff to get lost into and "love".
I can totally understand people who loved their first few albums and then kinda lost interest in the "formula" (which, even with different variantions and some weird turns, is not too "surprising"), but I do love all the stuff going on in the tracks, the sounds and dynamics, even in the pieces who seem the most "already heard" to a listener knowing what mogwai do...
As much as I loved "the hawk..." and Special moves for the subtle stuff, I think I'll love this one for the same reason, it's not just quiet-noise-quiet "as usual".
can't explain better.
Language limitations.

I thought it was ok, not as good as The Hawk is Howling though.

Rano Pano was the best song in my opinion.

narlus 01.03.2011 05:26 PM

for people who don't like _The Hawk Is Howling_, do you really find songs like "The Precipice" dull? that song, to me, is incredible.

PAULYBEE2656 01.04.2011 01:01 PM

erm am i the only one who thinks hardcore pisses all over hawk and mr beast with big acidy hot steaming urine? this album is damn damn damn good! best thing the mogwais have done for years!

this album rocks!

nicfit 01.04.2011 05:35 PM

So glad you like it paul.
I still have to listen "properly", I'll wait till I get the real thing in my hands (pre ordering soon).
I really think both in this release and "hawk" there's lot of stuff that is up with the best things mogwai ever produced. I liked hawk way more than mr beast, so I hope I'll end up with your same "ideas" on the trio, ,meaning I'll love this even more.

SYRFox 03.18.2011 12:46 PM

well, this is a great album i think. eventually listened to it today and i really like it, didn't expect it to be that good to be honest. seeing them tonight: can't wait!

SonicBebs 03.18.2011 02:47 PM

it will probably be loud, then a bit quiet, then loud, then a bit quiet

but actually pretty good too

SYRFox 03.18.2011 05:59 PM

holy shit
they were excellent. probably the best 'rock' concert i've ever seen - the loudest, too (and i've seen sunn o))), godspeed you black emperor, sister iodine, dälek, amongst others) -. you could feel the sound waving in the air, soundscapes melting, etc. incredible.
they did BOTH mogwai fear satan and like herod. mogwai fear satan's explosion is pure bliss.
and like herod into batcat as an encore feels like the apocalypse.

i had already seen them in 2007 in a festival, and though it was very good, i must say i wasn't expecting much from this gig - to tell the truth i wasn't sure i'd go until 5 pm today - ; now i know what a pathetic fool i would have been if i had missed them!

nicfit 03.18.2011 06:00 PM

it's nice to know people in the civilized world can enjoy live gigs which end before gigs over here even start.

the ikara cult 03.18.2011 06:38 PM

Have they done a DVD with this one as well?
The DVD that came with Mr Beast was completely uneventful, i felt like in watching it i was making my entire existence subject to satire, and then suffering the indignity of being told it was a Bonus Satire.

That's only true if you listen to them.

Mogwai: still one of the better live bands
Mogwai: dull-as-fuck on record.
Mogwai: minimal point in posting in threads about them.
Mogwai: but I still am.
Mogwai: 'I saw them in '97, don't you know?'
Glice: prick.

ann ashtray 03.18.2011 10:31 PM

Almost everything associated with the word "hardcore" sucks. Especially if it came after 1986.

Glice 03.18.2011 10:34 PM

When were you born again?

Almost 28, Glice. Which has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

This can be true just for "happy songs..." imo.
Except for Killing all the flies.
But who cares, I love the last couple albums and older ones too.
Except for "happy songs..", don't like it that much.

in the uk in the early 90's there was a scene emerging from rave called hardcore, and the people who would get off their heads on E or amphetemine would put their hands in the air when MC's said stuff like
"hardcore will never die!!! woop woop!!" and
"10, 9, 8, 7, 6 HARDCORE!!!!!" and
"Hardcore whats the score?"

and stuff like that

i really like Happy Songs. It's pretty

nicfit 03.19.2011 05:30 AM

It's not "bad", I just think it's the one which works "worst" as an album compared to the others and has less "interesting" sounds-production.
All of the above: "imo". I'm not trying to persuade anyone here.
It's ultimately a matter of personal taste, no matter how people puts it in "absolutistic" terms :D.

greedrex 03.19.2011 06:28 AM

guess what? I re-listened to "Hardcore.." yesterday and eventually found it all right. Had discarded it too quickly. Not that bad....

I think it's a common "problem" with "post-rock" bands etc.
You kinda know what to expect from their albums, and if you listen with not enough attention/care you get the impression everything is "as usual" and consequently not worth your time and consequently useless compared to bands' earlier output.
But hell, what about the guitars in "san pedro"?
The chords/progression/sounds smacked right in the middle of "too raging to cheers"?
I like.

YOU OBVIOUSLY NEVER HEARD SLICES ANNIE.

o'connor 03.19.2011 08:54 AM

i love the new mogwai album. i think it's a nice change of pace for them.

nicfit 03.19.2011 09:04 AM

Oh come on, Glice contracted jicotic deletionitis?

Glice 03.19.2011 09:35 AM

Ha. It wasn't as funny as I wanted it to be, couldn't be bothered to re-phrase it.
