I love them all but I went with Thurston

He was in Konk at the same time as when he was in Sonic Youth. He chose Konk over Sonic Youth. |

Oh shit yeah. I forgot about her. |
kim is a kool thing
|
I'd do Thurdson, if given the opportunity. Aww Yeah...
Anyhow, you get the impression he'd be a bit of a tool from time to time, but he seems to be fun, so that's a plus. And, despite a few missteps I've almost always prefered his songs & voice to both Kim & Lee. Lee's voice is just so, neat, or something, I don't know. I love em' all, but you've got to make the tough choises sometimes. |

I think the liner notes for the reissue of the SY ep are really funny on that point. Glen Branca uses his piece to lift up SY as the saviours of music from the scourge of dance-rock, and goes on to list a few bands that made up the core of the scene that SY were, in his eyes, standing against. Edson then lists more or less the same bands as his biggest contemporary influences. All things to all people I suppose. |
i voted for kim but can't believe how little love steve is getting. love him too!

Haha. A "kool" is a black person. |

Didnt know that... suddenly brings a whole new dimension to the songs meanings... |
Kim
|
Guess no one on this board has listened to Cross the Breeze. Steve at perfection.
|
Thurston,
He used to be hot back in the day. |
Kool Thing is all about the view whites tend to have of black male sexual potency, as well as Kim railing against the misogyny in most rap. The Chuck D thing is meant to signify that while a lot of rap had all this rhetoric regarding a "revolution", Kim is wondering where her place, as a woman, in the upcoming new world will be. She's asking him real questions and he just spouts of mindless salvo-cliches.
|
No wonder all African Americans smoke nasty ass KOOL cigarettes.
|
I think you read into Kool thing a little too much..

bob bert was good but you suck....
steve only got 4 votes????? dumb poll tho.. thurston/kim/lee/steve get my vote as the rest arent members of sy anymore...... |
yeah, dumb
|
i just randomly searched page one hundred something and found this poll. i voted for lee. even though if i knew steve barely got any votes i would've voted for him.
|
Individually they all have their strong points and their weak points. When they come together, their strong points shine through (for the most part). I refuse to choose.
|
Lee.
|
Lee motherfucking ranaldo

Lee !!!!! Do you want to be my father ?

in their own unique way they are each my favorite, for very different reasons. |
go lee go, havent thought that lee would be so close behind thurston...
|
It's Lee for me....
Early Lee looks like he could've come straight out of Blondie... |
I voted Thurston but Steve Shelley is very close behind
|
thurston.
mr o'rourke is a genius, but i never thoght of him as a real member of sonic youth, just a temporary addiition that kinda blasted the band out of thier late 90s musical funk. damn, sclavunos, been in more great bands than anyone. gynecologists, teenage jesus, the bad seeds, sonic youth, beirut slump, 8 eyed spy, the cramps, shotgun wedding, grinderman. |
foockin lee!
|
Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee... Lee all the way!!!
|
Jim Morrison, without a doubt
|
I picked Thurston on instinct. He was decidedly my favorite in middle school and I love his solo stuff as well as Ecstatic Peace!, but in reality I hate to pick because they feed off one another and are far too mysterious to ever justify any dislike.
|
Thurston, but I have lots of love for Lee, Steve, and Jim as well. Jim especially.
|
I was gonna vote for Steve because he's amazing but has so few votes... then I was gonna vote for Lee 'cause he's so fucking hot...
I ended up voting for Kim. |
mark ibold????????????????????????
|
poor steve shelley :'(
LEE is the best in every respect, though jim o'rourke has the best solo projects obviously. |
Lee.
I met him once while stranded outside a sonic show I couldn't get into when he ran out to go get something before the encore and he couldn't have been nicer. He gave me a free copy of rather ripped : ) |
I can't choose. I used to like Thurston the most - I thought he had the best songs and he looked the coolest - but now I like them all.
|
Lee and especially Steve are probably the most solid as people. While I do find it a bit wearisome at times, I do admire the role Thurston has played in recent years promoting smaller bands. Kim has always irritated me for some reason, although I do think that she's a very underrated bass player.
In terms of sheer technical ability, I dunno. Probably Steve. I was listening to the Dim Stars album the other night and his playing really stood out. I met Thurston on a handfull of occasions in the late 80s early 90s and he really was extremely nice, even when I was mispronouncing Die Kreuzen over and over again! I think it's difficult to get a gauge on any of them now though. They've reached that iconic stage where I'm sure that they themselves don't really know who or what they are anymore. |
